  1. could you wait until the head is off, then use your impact wrench? I just did an 01 2.5 that way.
  2. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check it out. One other thing I forgot to mention. with the key on but engine not running I hear a buzzing sound, down by the transmission, when the throttle is applied. it quits buzzing back at idle position.
  3. I'd love to have a scanner for the pc. Any recommendations? Funds are very tight right now. I may have to bite the bullet on this one and take to the shop. Heaven forbid
  4. Its a 99 phase II 2.2 with 10:1 compression ratio. It bogs in the driveway in neutral. can hold the bog with half to full throttle. Like I said before, I can hold the bog, no power, then pinch the fuel return line and it will rev up.
  5. I checked the timing belt. It is a new gates belt. the marks are dead on. Idlers and tensioner look old. checked compression, 200 psi all cylinders. I drove it about 1 hour today. It pulls hard from standing start and revs to about 4000 rpm on flat or downhill, as long as throttle is not floored. I came out of a parking lot with a steep long driveway uphill, barely made it up. about 5 mph is all I could get. any throttle caused it to bog. at the top I turned down the road, it ran fine to 40 mph. I have to nurse the throttle, not to give it to much. Its like a switch, to much throttle and it shuts off. Briefly down the hiway it made 55 mph. no check engine light. starts and idles fine. plugs are new and burning clean wires look new to me its acting like a fuel problem, I've got another fuel regulator on the way, any ideas?
  6. Yes, the fuel filter and air filter are new. the timing belt was changed 10k ago. the car has 110k. Its a family members car so I only drove it once around the block. It ran great as long as I didn't give it to much gas. I'm told, sometimes it runs fine.
  7. Its been running like this for awhile. several tanks of fuel. It runs very well at low throttle.
  8. It doesn't stall, just bogs down, like a faulty accelerator pump on a carburetor. but never revs up higher than about 1500 rpms. I can hold the bog steady with half or full throttle. I got a little more rpm by pinching the fuel return line. but the problem is still there. It has power and runs well up to 1500 rpms. there is no potato in the tail pipe.
  9. I have a 99 Legacy L 2.2 auto. It starts and runs fine until you give it throttle. it starts to rev, then it falls on its face, bogs down, no power, acts like its not getting fuel. no check engine light. I change the fuel pressure regulator from a parts car but no change. I was playing around with pinching the fuel return line and it seemed to help slightly, is why I changed the regulator. any ideas?
  10. Do you have ice in the radiator? I don't think freezing the water will stop you from starting. unless the water pump is frozen keeping the engine from turning over. but you may have some serious leaks once it thaws. get some anti-freeze in there asap. I've seen engines ruined from 1 day in freezing weather. No modern car should be run without anti-freeze.
  11. It looks right. mine had that triangle point to the right also. It's the big dot. that is at 12 o'clock
  12. thanks for the replies. I can check my rear diff. and code and find my final drive ratio. but that's only half the problem. If I can find an exact 01 OB trans. problem solved. I haven't found one. I would like a low mileage replacement. what is the difference in a 05 OB non turbo 4.11 to my 01. or any other year models? this chart on the net may not be 100% accurate carpart.com wants to know if its a legacy or legacy outback or gt. whats the diff. except for the diff.
  13. http://www.gearhack.com/myink/ViewPage.php?file=docs/Subaru%20Transmission%20Chart near bottom of the page
  14. that's why I'm posting. the chart shows my 02 outback as 3.9 My local junk yard has an 03 Baja trans. they think is the correct trans, the chart shows as 4.11... 03 and 04 outbacks are 4.11 someone is wrong. I'm trying to find out
  15. according to the charts floating on the net, my trans. has a 3.9 final drive. sort of rare. the junk yards are telling me their cross reference covers car with 4.11. mine is a TY754VCBCA Who is right? Any way to tell for sure? Can a pull clutch trans be used? say a WRX.
  16. I'm just wrapping up my timing belt change. I've got 47 and 43.5 teeth between the marks.
  17. I would go new. http://motors.shop.ebay.com/Parts-Accessories-/6028/i.html?_nkw=subaru+brake+disc&_catref=1&_dmpt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&_ipg=&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282&_rdc=1 https://www.1stsubaruparts.com/partscat.html http://www.tirerack.com/
  18. I have the front cover off. The passenger side cam is about 9 teeth retarded. I don't see any damage to the belt or pulleys. It's late and dark out, so it will have to wait. Any ideas as to what would cause the belt to jump that far out of alignment? How about valve damage?
  19. I like rain-x. follow the directions on the bottle. personally, I think everyone should you it. you can pass a semi on a rainy night and actually see the road, it works better the harder it rains and the faster you drive
  20. the last 3 cars to leave me stranded have been fuel pumps. my Dodge diesel is on its 3rd fuel pump in 80K miles. just changed it last month. Last year my BMW died at the post office. it was the fuel pump. and many years ago I had a Subaru gl10 that had an intermittent fuel pump that left me stranded a few times. but on this car it is not the fuel pump.
  21. replaced coil last night. no change. I haven't had a lot of time to work on this. going to check timing belt marks and compression next. this happened to the previous owner. was towed to the dealer, they changed battery terminals. can't get much info from the dealer about what they did. but the car was running fine for awhile thanks for the info
  22. it has 98,000 miles. misfire code was for cylinder #2, would the knock sensor cause the car to die and not restart? Plugs were changed. don't know the maintenance history. possible wiring problems. battery terminals were changed to crappy clamp on. but it was running fine, there is spark on all four wires. thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to check it out.
  23. 2001 Legacy obw 2.5 manual trans. while traveling at 50 MPH car lost power and died. had it towed home. I have a running parts car. so decided to swap some parts and sensors, checked the fuel pump first. it appears to pump fuel at the filter, next clamped the return line. didn't start so I switched pumps. still no start. its has spark. I squirted some fuel into the throttle body and the starter ran faster but no start. I switch cam sensor. no start. I'm going to check the timing belt marks tomorrow. the belt is turning. any ideas? P.S. codes are Knock sensor misfire random
