strange junkyard find!
so after looking for some ford parts for a friends truck i went looking in the import section hoping to find some usable and much needed subaru parts. i came upon a 96 outback that looked like it went off the road in a rally. i poped the hood and to my suprise it had an EJ22 in it. now i have read about people taking out the EJ25 and replacing it with an EJ22 but as i looked closer at the little vin number plate by the left strut bearing it said EJ22 under engine type:eek: when did the outback get an ej22 is this a first generation outback thing only?

PeterD replied to alexk02's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXlost of tools. I really cant remember all of them. I always seem to add a tool i don't have in there, usualy that happens when something happens and I don't have the proper tool for my car or for someone elses.

What's the best way to clean the engine compartment?
PeterD replied to 211's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI use Simple Green a brush for the hard stuff, and rense it off with a garden hose, ( no steam or high pressure ) if available i use a compressor to blow off the water. let it dry a bit then start the car up. ive had 0 problems cleaning my subaru and my vw engines.

Im stumped!
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXproblem solved!!!! so i discovered my problem. this rock made all the vibrations resonate through the car. i removed the rocks and the sound was gone. every time i put my foot on the gas the tourqe would lift that rubber mount up and when i let off the gas it was coming down on the rock and the rubber was un able to absorb the vibrations.

Im stumped!
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI checked the rear diff oil, its old so i replaced it, checked the back brakes there fine. a few ideas i have are the rear axles, or axle. or the bushings holding the rear end to the car. Im totaly stumped, and i don't beleve anyone will really beable to help unless there in the car listening. i guess i'll let it go till it gets real bad, i just hope i can figure out the problem before i drive to Wistler to go skiing in a month

Im stumped!
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXhummm. strange.. how would one go about finding if that is the problem. ive beat on it alot before that... and really didn't drive the car hard. i made one big climb up a dirt hill but didn't spin the tires too much. if thats the problem im glad these cars are everyware.

Im stumped!
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX91 legacy wagon AWD 5sp. the muffler is intact, no noise at all when the car is on the highway. for example, i take off in first gear and rev the motor to 4k then let off the gas, that compression is when i start to hear the grinding type noise. if i put my foot back on the gas it goes away. :-\

Im stumped!
alright i went on some trails today with the legacy and coming home i have this nasty sound coming from the rear end area. When i accelerate forward the sound goes away, but when i let off the gas there is this nasty grinding sound, its hard to explain. on the highway you cant hear it only when you let off the gas in the lower gears

What is your average MPG in EJ22 NA Legacy?
PeterD replied to AlpineRaven's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXmy 91 EJ22 wagon 5sp has averaged 25mpg over the past 8 full tanks of gas, my best has been 28.2 and my worst was 21.1mpg. its really not as bad as i thought, although if all you do is city driving there are way more efficent cars. my vw will get 28mpg when i beat on it all day long, and 36mpg on a long highway drive.

PeterD replied to JimmyJam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXif the motor goes why not just get a low milage motor and keep it going:banana: i guess if the body goes then thats it.

is this normal
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCar-----------91 legacy L engine--------2.2L milage--------180,500miles oil------------10w-30 filter----------napa ( not napa gold ) temperature---24 degrees F oil last changed 200 miles ago, car parked on a flat driveway. when I start the car up the oil light is the last light to turn off. if your not looking at the dash when you start it up you won't notice it. IM sure its normal and im just paranoid. the car runs great though.

is this normal
when i start the car up in the morning the oil light comes on for a few seconds then turns off. this only happens when the car has been sitting for a while.

First Snow: Subie > Toyo
PeterD replied to mrCharlie's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthen i would go for a set of summer tires, the WR is a good tire just not something you want to autox with or whatnot. for dry weather driving i hate siped tires i find they are really really squirmy.

Mandatory stability control
PeterD replied to hankosolder2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt doesn't suprise me one bit. the government likes to tell us whats best for us:mad: sure its fine if its there but please alow the driver to defeat it if they want to. i was autoxing this year and took a ride in a new MK5 gti he was able to defeat the stability and traction control... although ever time you turn the car back on you have to re defeat it. thats fine with me but not havint that control is pushing it. i guess this is another reason i'll stick to older cars:)

please take off those tire chains!
PeterD replied to Spiffy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe last time the State PD told me to put chains on i took them off a mile up the road ( in my scirocco ) and drove over the pass. the conditions didn't need chains. my subaru is quite good in the snow and if they told me to put chains on i would probably have to drive around them and keep going. this thing has soo much grip i don't know why you would even need chains. :-\ just slow down on the snow and keep the car pointed in the right direction.

Wiper Motor ball joint (see photos to help)
PeterD replied to cidion's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI looked all over for thoes as I have the same problem. I found that you can't buy just the white plastic part you have to buy the whole arm ( please correct me if im wrong... i would like to buy a few ) so I went to the pull-n-save and found the whole arm off a junked car. cost me a buck.

PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYes. Bilstein HDs on my VW were amaizing. i loved them... too bad i sold them and put stock shocks back on.. strapted for cash last year:-\ Bilstein makes IMO the best shocks you can get:cool:

KYB GR2 vs. Stock
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe car is well behaved, my records show the struts were replaced at least once since the car was new ( owner stated some of the records were missing ) . It dosn't float around and bob up and down like it has blown struts. It dosn't feel dangerous, at all. I also know KYB makes the factory strits. Most people seem to act as if subaru didn't get it right from the factory. ive ridden in plenty of cars with blown struts.. the ones on the car have a bit more life left to give, and when there time comes and finances are good i'll get OEM KYB struts all around. its not a race car, it dosn't need stiff struts when its used as a daily driver. ok i'll quit my blabbing...to each his own i guess.

Legacy spring questions?
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthats some good stuff but i prefer PB Blaster;) I got the nut off. since i had them on the car i took a breaker bar and managed to get them loose. the locking nut must have worked real well.
