205k miles and no big problems aside from regular matinence and a few CVs. in reality it has more to do with having fun. the subaru is cool for the winter months but as soon as the sun comes out..its parked. and parts are cheap im not sure whare your buying them. there is more aftermarket they are way easy to work on. you can get a lemon, not trying to say vws are reliable, but properly taken care of and maintained they will go for a long long time. people neglect them and they fall apart then they whine about how unreliable they are... subaru makes a great car but to me it only puts a smile on my face ether off road or in the snow..... but long ago i had the chance to get a nice RX turbo.. and that sadly didn't happen... guy wouldn't let me or my dad test drive it for insurance reasons and we walked away. if that happend i probably would have never gotten a vw.. maybe it was fate.. its been in my familys blood. im german what i can i say:grin: im not sure what direction i want to take with my little red suby.. ive got alot of ideas, if i want to clean it up and make it a nice original car.. or use it as a beater.. the later has been in my mind. its my tractor.. parts getter, winter beater. im interested in lifting it and putting on my newly found Pug 14in steelies, but im not sure what lift i sould go with.. but after i do that i have very little power so how will i turn the bigger tires? my friend saw one of your subarus down in corvallis and thought it looked badass.
-
i have only had the scirocco... and really perfer the german built rabbits and roccos as to the us built ones.. ( the german ones had better wiring in them ) my dad has a 69 vw bus that is currently a project sort of. it was bought when my dad was a kid by his dad. its kinda special in the family.

well the vw dosn't go as well inthe snow.. but it works.. and i doubt i'll see much more any way. the vw handles better, brakes better, its faster, it does the speed limit. it starts when its cold out. the heater works better. it looks better, its easy to work on, bla bla bla but you cant compare it to the subaru in the snow. . i doubt my subaru will ever see the milage i get in the vw.... heck it gets better milage than my moms outback or my friends legacy. im not so brand loyal that i cant accept or like other cars. im a vw subaru nut.. will be for a long time. both companies have made cars that apeal to me and are uniqe in there own special way. maby me and my crazy imagination will put an EJ22 into the subaru:brow: i figure it would be nice to have some power before lifting it.
-
its got balls:brow: and a cd player... and comfortable seats, and the worst milage i get is 28mpg.. and thats hard driving;). the main reason is milage.. i drive alot and the wagon was getting 20mpg. the rocco will get 35+on the highway. it also makes a hell of better daily driver than the subaru. im keep ing the suby.. and looking into some mild off road mods.. I have a weber to install, some rubber mounts to fix, a wheel bearing...yada yada read my first post. i just chose not to use it as a dialy. subarus are cool.. but if you have never driven a water cooled dub you cant say anything:D

so i just finished getting my vw scirocco back on the road. Im having alot of little problems with the subaru and im going to wait till i get stuff put together to work on it. I have a weber carb that needs rebuilt and re jeted, some pugs that need tires and a few lug nuts... and a rear bumper and some other little things like a wheel bearing and some tranny mounts... over all it needs some stuff. I figure i'll use it as a beater, maybe lift it, use it for wheelin..and drive it when my vw breaks down:grin: should be fun. so i'll be around the board posting here and there, Im not getting rid of it like i did with my 84. now time to figure out what lift i should go with.. possibly.. if i even lif it.

Retrofitting stiffer struts to EA81
PeterD replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
possibly something in the vw world would work.. these struts look very similar to my vw struts. but they might not be shorter...so that wouldn't work :-\ -
this would be duel webers or kadrons depending on what will work and whats cheaper.. both good carbs. also im not sure how you would use rubber hose for the coolent. the thermostat is also built into the intake manifold.

ive got a fare amount of info on the vw parts but thoes links are new to me and quite helpfull, Thanks! I have talked for hours with my dad on what he has done, also on what direction we are going to take with the vw bus "project" we have had. it just seems as if fabricating work has stoped alot of cool ideas, the problem i have is too many interests and too many cool project ideas. i have a subaru, a water cooeld vw, and possibly an aircooled vw. still trying to figure out the coolent routing would be a hard. need some good ideas for that.

Lookie what the man in the big brown van dropped off!!!
PeterD replied to 211's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
wow i gues i have never seen a bair ea82 head.. looks more like an ohv rather than an ohc. cool:) -
so i seem to have thiese crazy ideas and if you know me i make up alot of them but never have the ball$ to acualy try the crazy idea out. so here is another one. after working with my dad with an old air cooeld vw. i thought it would be kinda sweet to try and put duel weber carbs on the subaru. probably duel 34 ict carbs.. they should suite the 1.8 well as that is allthe big my dads vw motor is. looking at the hitachi maifold i snaged for my weber dgv install i was thinking that this would almost be impossible. as we have the crazy water line running through the intake maifold. somehow i would have to think of some way to incorporate that water line and the thermostat into the duel carb setup.. also im not sure if that particular carb im thinking of will work with a vacume advance dizzy. get the cam reground to something a little more aggressve.. if possible do a little porting on the head, up the compression a wee bit. could be cool. althought the subaru head is differnt thatn a vw head.. intake valves on the outside and exhast on the inside.. aircooled vw heads are opposite.. not sure if that would be a problem. any way a nother crazy idea wich i probably won't ever try:-\ in reality this would probably cause the car to fail smog tests if you have to get them done. and its not like this idea is new as didn't subaru make a duel carb motor. aa whatever.

are thoes off of an ea81..? -
well i whent wheelin with my friends 91 explorer and it was alright.. much more comfoartable off road than my little subaru. althouth this huge puddle stope him dean in his tracks.. the front diff got hung up as the tires sunk in the deep ruts.. my subaru made it thought... bairly, serioulsy i lucked out. personaly i would say a bone stock ouback will not keep up with the exporer. its low range, and power would edge it out.. unless you drive your outback like a mad man.

Ratio of running vs. non-running subarus
PeterD replied to Snowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i have one.. and it runs. -
i have brought many of lifetime axles in with broken boots. and had them repalced.
-
im the same boat as you althougth i have only put a few hundred on my new rebuilt cvs. but i have totaly broken rear tranny mounts wich im linking to the problem. ive also heard of people having axles go bad really fast. possibly finding a better axle or a better rebuild. many of the reman axles are crap. i bought lifetime warranty axles and when they go bad i just get another one.. takes 30min max to replace them.
-
well i thought i would go to the pull and save out in the vally ( spokane) it was a terrable day to go, snowing, freezing coold... yet it is the best time. hardly anyone there and you find the good stuff. like my set of 14in pugs... this time a complete set that i can get ballanced, heres a pic of my sub trying them on for size. i like the way they fit even with out a lift, i'll probably end up getting tires that are the same size that are on there. 175-70-14. i cranked the steering wheel full lock both ways and there was no rubbing. although im now in the hunt for a two sets of pug lug nuts.

Man! First real winter test of the 'roo, <3 <3 <3
PeterD replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
since it first snowed here in good ol cheney i have ahd the chance to drive a few cars inte snow. my friends 90 volvo 240 and a honda. I to am a beliver. now since my dad got his 98 outback all up and running he had the chance to hit the snow and he was very very happy. like you i will not be happy with a 2wd car in the snow... nothing like a controled drift around the bends... -
yea but the last few subarus i looked under had crap mounts also.. i'll take another gander if they have anything new in the yard when i go get a hitachi manifold..

yes the tranny is geared very very well but its the least of my conserns.. the 84 got way better milage with help from the taller 4th gear. but it was not as quick on its toes. it sitll works but it sure makes some bad sounds.. a rebuild would probably be a little over the top for this car. I thought about the 5sp swap possibly ater my currnet tranny goes. im still struggling to fix my negative camber issue in the rear.. that is my goal to fix that as soon as possible.. and the lower tranny mounts.. and that hopfully will solve the problem of eating CVs. im not very brand loyal, vw is just as importatnt to me as subaru is, but in different ways. IMO they are a much more fun car to drive.. although not quite as dependable. they both have a uniqe part to them that i like and enjoy. and if you look real real hard you can see that subaru did take some vw concepts and improved upon them. in many ways the ea81 is very similar to the air cooled vw engine. i plan on getting an old air cooled beetle in the summer.. its a thought at least. they ave been a dream of mine to own.. and with the subaru at my side..im good to go. but for now the subaru is the daily as the vw is broken... i was workingn on it over thanksgiving and snapped a lower control arm mouning bolt..so over christmas break i plan to rebuild andinstall the weber, and install my cd player and speakers. oh and the sub wont turn into a hardcore off roader. it will be a light roader. trail car, daily driver.. winter beater.
-
so i was talking to my dad and the 82 wagon ive been driving is mine now.. it will be in my name soon. hopefully i can get some of the problems worked out... still working onthe rear camber issue and the tranny mounts... Also--anyone know of a good place to find rear tranny mounts.. or who has a few to spair. the only place i have found with them is the dealer for 50 bucks a pop:eek: also will soon be looking for a 4sp duel range tranny..mine is on the brink of exploding.

rally tires have extremely stiff sidwalls.. and not much flex.. so if you air down the tires im not sure it wouldhelp much could be a tough tire though.. expensive but tough.

sweet! looks like it was quite icy
