Rear bumper.. what are my options?
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i took it off and well, its not in too bad of shape. just need to do some bending, although now im going to see if my friend back on the west side still has his welder at his parents house, im gonna weld soemthing up.. sometthing thats a little stronger. when i get back over there for thanksgiving. hopfully. -
Well i really did a number to my pumper yesturday trying to pull out my friend who got his ford explorer stuck when we went wheelin. i knew i was going to do some damage..but we were the only ones around..untill some dirt bikers went to get a firend and his big truck to pull him out. i ripped some of the body apart when i found out the hitch was not mountd in a proper location.. my fault for not looking. what kinda options do i have for a bumper. i would like something more solid so i can use it for the winter to tow people out of the ditch and whatnot. any good ideas or places to look... I'll be searching on the board for a bit.

much like this... still no live axle but three locking diffs will help:brow:

man i cant wait for the snow. ether my vw or my subaru, both are animals in it. its getting there. its cold over here in Cheney.

well we messed around today but brought my friend and his bone stock 91 ford explorer. its not too bad for a stock rig.. well not too bad till he got stuck... this fat fat mud hole along the fence line. i drove thought it with the suby and bairly made it with the water up on the doors. some how i didn't get stuck, my buddy drove in deeper than i did before i could yell out to not try it. sure enough he got stuck high centered between the ruts. his front diff caught up on the dirt. yes thats my a$$ all 4 wheels were spinning free friend said he had a chain or a tow rope, i said bring it. turned out the chain was about 7 feet long:banghead:, here is me trying to rig something up and try to pull him or move him a bit. it was a no go. i about ripped my bumper cean off. i bent it out real good, and ripped a mounting poing out that turned out being the rear floor sheat metal. . oh well, a dirt biker dude went and found his buddy with his huge Blazer and pulled him out. it was all fun, it was his first time 4 wheelin in that car besides the snow. i was impressed at its abilites. but in the end i think my lack of a front diff hanging down... thanks to IFS i was able to sneek throught that huge puddle i'll probably be rigging up a nice bumper with some tow points now. i know why you guys like this. its fun to watch peopls faces in the park.

that sounds like it would be funny to see:D

i plan to head out to the ORV park on this sunday. TOmarow so if anyone is wanting to go play around in the park im there. Im taking a friend there to show him the park.
-
i guess your right... i took it a bit far. i guess if you learn to wheel in a subaru you take the right path, sometimes you can make alot of other rigs look bad:D
-
aahh chill guys. i like subarus just as much as the next nut around here.:-\ just not in the same ways i guess. im not trying to discredit these subarus capabilites, im well aware of what they can do, from many little adventures of my own. heck ive suprised a handfull of other people in much more agressive off road trucks/cars whatever. but subarus don't have any real articuation, so its more of a comical post IMO. just htought i would spice it up with some impressive rigs. please don't take it as an attack. K

but doing so in a subaru is much less gracefull its an expensive hobby, and that jeep rubicon is probably stock with the sway bar disconected. i understand that the desision to use a subaru as a 4x4 platform is clearly a finacial reason.. and that may explain why i play around off road with a subaru. but to make a post dedicated to articulation for a car that clearly lacks in that aspect, dosn't make sense to me:-\
-
REAL articulation....
-
well ide start with a good platform...rules out subaru:), its fun messing around with my stock subaru, but i have zero desire to make it into an off roading machine.. but hey have fun with them. they are fun yes, they are cheap yes. and the fact your out to prove they can go off road is cool.

there Falken ZE-512s 185/60-14s thats last year right after i washed and used a claybar then a 3 stage mothres polish and wax job. it looked awsome. but since then i have been hit by 2 paintballs wich did not wash off. so its not as nice looking right now. im loooking at getting another 84 rocco to beat on or use for parts.. not sure yet.
-
like i said before... its got rust, its been hit. its just your imagination. trust me. my vw is a little more special and will be kept clean. My VW scirocco for example im really interested in getting an early 90s jeep cherokee for winter and fun. but thats not likely to happen any time soon so the suby will have to be in its place:D
-
well its not too clean.. even when its not muddy. its got dents and its been hit before. its got a few rust holes under the rear drivers side door. and its been well used... so its not too clean. but its a beater so i couuld care less about wheelin it. and that is pathetic articulation in both picts.,....yes im beeing rude but its true. its pathetic. now that H3 i was following had a hell of alot of articulation.. at least for the back axle i was supprized, very suprised. it was a good after noon. open diffs and low ground clearence kinda spoil the fun. but as many say if you can wheel in a subaru you can wheel in anything. and now i realize why many of you subaru nuts love it. showing up real 4x4s in a little car. but overall im impressed by this subaru. it takes a beating but it goes many places most cant beleve.

Hey guys. this was a spurr of the moment thing. i was bored and went with another friend out to have some fun. we will seriously have to go out some time. Any way we went to Riverside statepark again this time with a friend that enjoys this a little more. it was overall more fun that the last time. i have my better tires on the car. we did some cool stuff, made some cool climbs. the best part was following a Hummer H3 around the park. he needed me to spot him on a few moves he did. I was impressed, but noticed that he didn't have locking diff. he was pushing it quite hard with the h3, over all good to see him out there. I went up some hills that he went up and he was kinda suprized i made them. too tell you the truth he was kinda new at this and his rig is much more capable than what he was doing. here are some pics. the first one is me with my wheel on the stump. the guy in the H3 needed me to spot him as he backed off of it... i drove right on top of it and it kinda rubbed the underside of the car but over all kindof a sissy log. the second one is going down a trail that the hummer went down after i got him off the log. I think i was guy embarassing the guy. And the last one, in the parking lot ready to go home. Spokane guys, lets get together some time.
-
thats some incredible scenery. wish i could have been there.
-
this is the hill i went up... it looks like a sisy trail from this view.. but after climbing i felt uneasy about going bck down. it was alost more vertical at the top... it was a challange.
-
Well i messed around way in the back of the park. that huge sand clearing if your facing in the direction of the parking lot it was on the left....its hard for me to explain. i think i have a pic of it i'll try and post it. i need to get my winter tires mounted so i have a bit more traction. the yoyo z800s were kinda crapy for this.
-
well i was bored so i took a friend with me to go 4wheelin at the Riverside state park ORV park. it was kinda dry and i was using some street tires. but it was fun any way. sorry i don't have an pics i was to busy driving. i did some crazy climbs, at least i thought they were crazy. i made one climb got to the top and looked at the trail i went up. a guy in a jeep down below shouts up to me. " that was fu#%in sick" it was a wild ride. maybe some of you would like to get together when it gets a little muddy..hopfully before the snow.

PeterD replied to PictureChasers's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

Thank you all for your help, this was a very interesting project and what i found here and what you all told me helped alot. the car now rides on 92 legacy springs, 93 monroe struts. ride is good, ride height is very good. much better than i had thought. here is a crappy pic. it took about 3 hours for me and my friend leah to do the job.. yes she helped.. after getting all the struts on i forgot to re fill the master cylinder before bleading the rear breaks so i got the whole system screwed up... so tomarow i bleed the system all over agian. :-\ any way thanks again.
