  1. I checked the fusible links, all good both sides and underneath. I also checked the wires from the fusible links just before they disappear into the fender. Where are the power connections to the dash cluster panel. Is it the place where there are three plugs with multiple wires? If so, which of those wires should have a current running when the key is on? I checked the wires on the back of the alternator. The connector with two wires which I believe one of is the alternator field wire has power to one of the wires, I forget which color wire that is but it would be the one that as the connector is shaped like a T, it is the horizontal wire, or the top of the T. Can I just run a wire from the coil or battery to the alternator fuse in order to supply the power to the alternator? I can get along without the gauges.
  2. Thanks for the replies, I checked the fuses and the fusible links last night and they were ok, I am not getting any warning lights on the dash when I turn the key on. I have also noticed that the tach. is not functioning as well as the blower motor for the heater/ac. As I mentioned previously the temp. ,alt., and oil pressure gauges are not working either.
  3. I'll give that a try but it has been a few days since I washed the motor and the temp. around here has been in the 90's so I think everything is pretty dry in there.
  4. I have a 1985 wagon and the alternator checks out ok but the system is not getting a charge. Other symptoms include: the vehicle will not idle and the alternator, temp, and oil pressure gauges are not functioning. I purchased the car a couple of days ago and the previous owner stated that the only know issue was the water pump. I pressure washed the engine to clean off the grime before I replaced the water pump so I may have inadvertently caused the problem. The battery terminals were also covered in a heavy coat of corrosive residue. I have replaced the battery and tried two different alternators which are known to be good. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
  5. I installed a rebuilt rack yesterday on my 90 Loyale. The rack cost $125.00 w/no core charge on ebay. The whole job took about 4 hours. The rebuilt rack had a tag on it that said do not use ATF fluid or the warranty would be void, use only power steering fluid. With the recent new struts, ball joints, tie rod ends, steering rack, and tires my 290,000 mile Loyale rides like new.
  6. Does anyone know of a good online source for OEM rings and bearings?
  7. I forgot to mention the smoke is not from coolant burning, I have not refilled the coolant since the engine swap. I wanted to be sure the motor was working properly before I added coolant. I only ran the motor for about two minutes due to the excessive smoke.
  8. I recently put a used motor in my 90 Loyale. When I started it up after the swap it started billowing smoke and lots of it, there also sounded like a loud ticking noise coming from the engine. The motor was used but came from a reputable source. It sat around in his garage for about six months then in my garage for a couple more months. Does anyone have any suggestions for diagnosing the problem without having to pull the motor.
  9. Thanks, I will look into the ground but I think it is grounded properly because I only hooked up the pump to the positive side of the battery to check on the condition of the pump and it worked. As far as the pump turning on momentarily when I first turn on the ignition, I disconnected the fuel line at the throttle body, stuck it in a jar, and the jar remained dry after turning the ignition on a few times and cranking the motor.
  10. Last weekend I swapped the motor in my 1990 Loyale. The motor would not start and I traced the problem to the fuel pump. The fuel pump was working when the old motor expired this past April. It appears that the pump is not getting any power. If I connect a wire directly to the pump from the battery the pump works. I checked the fuse and it was good. I located four relays behind the steering column above the ecu and swapped them out with four from another Loyale still no power to the pump. Any suggestions? I would rather not rig the pump with a wire from the battery.
  11. Any advice on how to make a tool or where to purchase a tool to remove a couple of stubborn connecting rod pins on an EA82.
  12. Is is possible to split the block with the pistons still connected to the connecting rods and crankshaft. Does anyone have any tips or advice for the procedure? Thanks
  13. What do I need to disconnect in order to be able to start my 90 Loyale 4WD w/out pushing the clutch peddle in?
  14. My 93 Loyale has 345,000+, still going strong and rust free.
  15. You could save yourself a lot of trouble and take a trip out west and buy a rust free wagon. Check out the Medford, Oregon; Sacramento, Ca., San Francisco, CA; and Reno, Nevada craigslist ads. The are usually a couple of decent wagons available around the $500.00 price range.
  16. I have an 82 brat auto. I would like to put in a manual which transmissions work for the swap?
  17. How long is the oil dipstick for the EA82 engine? Thanks
  18. I saw one today in Ashland Oregon. If I see it again I will take a snapshot. It has a canvass top that went from behind the front seats to the tailgate.
  19. My 1990 Loyale smokes when I accelerate from a stop. It only smokes for about 3 seconds and only after the engine has reached operating temp. I replaced the PCV valve yesterday and all was fine but 24 hours and about 50 miles later the smoke is back. It is definitely oil that is burning from the looks and smell of it. The car has 250K miles on the engine and except for ticking before the engine gets up to temp. all else seems to be in good working order. Does anyone have any suggestions ? The hippies up hear in Ashland, Oregon are not to keen on the James Bond smokescreen. Thanks
  20. Are the cylinder heads from a FI ea82 interchangable with the heads from a non-FI?
  21. I am going to replace the clutch on my 1990 Loyale and noticed quite a disparity in pricing between various clutch kits for sale on e-bay. Does anyone have any suggestion on what I should avoid?
  22. will a flywheel from a 1985 2wd wagon work on my 1990 loyale 4wd ?
