distributor stuck in block
snowstormer replied to snowstormer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks for the encouragement guys. i have been having bad luck lately. i cant believe this thing will not come out. i wont get out the 8 pound woodsplitter -yet... -
im having bad luck lately on my soobs. trying to get a disty out of a carb ea82 motor i have. the sucker is stuck. way stuck. motor turns over and disty turns correctly. ive got it unbolted, i have sprayed it underneath tom help loosen, it barely moves or turns even if you would be trying to adjust the timing. ive pryed on it gently and tapped on it gently. im starting to get way less gentle.it will move back and forth now about 1/2 inch. it will move up about 1 millimeter. usually these things come out in 2 seconds! aarrrggghhh!!!

Why Won't it Start? IT STARTS!!!!!
snowstormer replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i had an87 gl spfi car that had sat for about 6 months before i got it without running.(blown tranny). when i first tried to get it going it would crank and crank but not fire. sprayed a little gas and starting fluid in her and then it would fire just till it ran out of what i sprayed in. after about 8-10 tries it ran on its own just fine, i figure it just took that long for it to finally get gas through the injectors. i would try it just to see if you get it to fire. -
bump: hey harpua- did ya see this?

no , the crank sensor thread was not mine but i have been reading it. i changed the disty 1st thing cause i figgered that is what the problem was, as crank sensor and all other parts relating to spark production is in the disty, right? since i still get the crank sensor code, do you think i should try another disty? a horn fuse did blow, i did put a radio in the car at the same time, all fusible links are good, i have voltage at the coil, the computer now lights up, but still no spark. can it be anything other than the disty? or coil? or wiring leading to these devices?
-
gotta go to bed. will try again after work tommorrow. at least i know my computer is not dead! THANK YOU everyone for your help.
-
the horn fuse was blown. the noise under the dash must be a relay kicking on the fuel pump as the fuel pump goes on at the same time, doh! still no spark. i just keep getting 8 short flashes over and over and over to infinity...
-
oh yeah, then when i turned on the key it made a weird vibration noise under the dash, kind of intermittently, kinda like a fuel pump. weird, but the computer is alive.
-
changed the fuse for the horn- got 1 long and then 3 short flashes. then plugged in green connectors,-got 8 short flashes.

no light on ecu with greens plugged together. no light on ecu no matter what.. fried computer, bummer. thank you very much for your timely assistance calebz. what do you think about converting to carb? i know you are partial to fuel injection, but i have a bunch of carbs, distys and intakes around. you do not need a computer to run a carb system do you?
-
o.k. there are 2 white and 2 green connectors on the drivers side firewall, i did not connect anything yet. when you turn on the ignition, there is no light on the ecu, no flashes or anything. where do i go from here? sorry so dumb with car computers. i am tempted to put on a carb manifold and disty...
-
thanks calebz. this is my first no spark on a sooby. i will report back.

hey harpua.[hope i got your name right] i stopped by the yard today that had the rx. it was as i remembered, the ground effects are missing or broke. the front and back were gone. the sides are both broken, could be from the junkyard forklift. not just cracked but broke. these guys must not have thought this car was worth anything. sorry man, but it was worth a shot. snowstormer.

my 87 gl wagon spfi was runnin fine. it had no radio so yesterday i took one out of a junker and put it in, worked fine. went to start car, cranked but would not fire. pulled coil wire and checked for spark. no spark even though it ran perfect 1 hour before. im good at changin parts but not diagnosing, so i put in a known good coil and a known good disty. still no spark. i put a test light on the positive side of the coil and it lights when i turn on the ignition, so i guess i got juice at the coil... i am running out of ideas. should i try to get error codes from ecu? i know this has been asked but how do i hook up the ecu connectors? the haynes says to hook them up but does not say where they are or what to hook to what. any other ideas or things to look for? thanks for any replies.

hello out there i am looking for a complete working distributor for my 87 gl wagon. it is the one for spfi. it has no vaccumm advance unit on it. none of the junkyards around my area have one. if this needs to be moved to the marketplace, go ahead and move as i was not sure where to post it. thanks for any replies.

junkyard lsd score!!!
snowstormer replied to snowstormer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yea, thanks for the reminder, dr. rx. i got a bunch of 3.9 open diffs laying around so i was planning on doing the gear swap. probably will not get around to it till fall, then im sure i will have some ?s to ask of you guys... harpua- i remember reading on the board the kind of things people are looking for off these cars, one of the first things i looked at was the skirts and as far as i remember, i think they are all kind of broke and beat up. where i live in wisconsin, the roads are real rough and the winters are long and harsh. cars get really beat up. this car was pretty rusty and the interior was rough. the running gear seemed to be o.k. though. and all the shifter parts are there. thats why i posted about the tranny. i go by this junkyard everyday on the way home from work so i will double check on the parts you are looking for just to be sure. i will post on tuesday to let you know if any of the parts are good. i looked at the car kind of quickly so i will make sure they are bad. -
well, i got lucky today. i had stripped down a 87 gl wagon. got all the parts from it and was hauling off the rusted out hulk to the closest junkyard to my house, about 30 miles away. i got to the yard and went to the counter. told them i had a scrap car for them. "o.k the counter guy says, walk out back, go up the hill and look for mike in the loader" he says. i was surprised cause this is one of those yards where you cant go in the yard or pull your own parts, kind of a "late model" yard where they crush all the older cars. this yard has not had any 80's soob parts whenever i have checked in the last three years. so i head out back up the hill, get to a group of workers and ask for mike. they point farther up the hill and if i listen i can faintly hear a loader in the distance. walk a little farther and happen to glance to my left, there sits a white, soob rx that says "turbo' on the side. i remember reading on the board that these things have lsd diffs in them so i ran over and crawled underneath. there was the tag covered with scum. i scrapped with my fingernails... yes LSD!!! there are very few soobs around this neck off the woods so i had given up a while ago on ever seeing one of these. to make a long story a little shorter, i got the diff. for 50 bucks. and they pulled it for me within about 20 minutes. i have a 87 5spd dual range lifted wagon that i built last fall so i have a home for it. just had to tell you all. thanks for listening. also, the car had a 5spd, dual range, tranny with a diff lock. is there anyone out there that would be interested in the tranny? the car had 135k on it. i did not check it out that close as it was closing time at the yard but i think i could get the tranny for $100 or so, not sure but i could look into it on monday if anyone is interested. im not looking to make any money on the tranny or anything. i would just want to do someone a favor if they are hard to find. there are many people that have done me favors or gave me info on this board so maybe i can return the favor. car is in northwest wisconsin, kinda by the city of "superior"

is anyone running a fully stripped no emissions ea82 with a hitachi carb? I want a motor with nothing on it except pcv system, disty vac line and manual choke. I am wondering if a hitachi carb can be made to run smoothly on this motor if everything is plugged off. also is it possible to remove and block off exhaust tubes, for lack of a better term? any replies are welcome.

stock ig. coil seeping oil...is it done?
snowstormer replied to nutt7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sorry if i gave you any mis-info nutt7. it was not my intent. i did not know coils are filled with oil, must be to help keep them cool? i guess i am lucky mine still works as all the oil leaked out about 20,000 miles ago. so when i do lose spark, i will know why! -
stock ig. coil seeping oil...is it done?
snowstormer replied to nutt7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
just a thought before you spend any money... does your coil have a "boot" on the end of it? i have seen 2 stock soob coils with factory boots filled with oil. i think to prevent corrosion of the ignition wiring. after removing the boot and the oil that was in it, the coils are still working after many thousands of miles. has anyone else seen this and can elaborate? -
well, this is not for sure and someone else may have another clue but... smoking and using oil, smokes more when going down a long hill or hard on the gas. sure sounds like a oil consumption problem somewhere. color of smoke can help confirm this.[blueish] could be sucking oil past the piston rings. can you do a compression check? maybe a bad intake valve oil seal? or soobs are known to have problems with the pcv system. do you know if the pcv valve is working and hoses hooked up correctly? just some ideas...

ea82 power windows to manual?
snowstormer replied to snowstormer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey, hows it going johnnieblue... im sorry but i probably wont be doin the swap until about 2 months down the road. this time of year [april, may] i have to put up my firewood for next winter before it gets too warm and to many bugs in the woods. i have a complete rusted out junker to take all the manual windows out of so i was just wondering if it was possible. maybe someone else has already done this and would be kind enough to give a rundown on it. -
