hey, i figure someone will know this off the top of their head. on ea82 cars, 87 gl to be exact , are the starters the same for a manual trans car and an automatic car? 3at auto and the 5spd d/r trans. just curious, have a 5spd car with a bad starter and a good starter from an auto car laying on my bench. thanks in advance for any info.

ignition switch or hot wire?
snowstormer replied to snowstormer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey thanks alot archemitis. do you know if that will run power to the fuel pump? maybe you and me should go lookin for a mint rx -
howdy y'all. just picked up a 87 ea82 wagon from the junkyard. got it for the tranny parts. [5spd d/r] the car is complete and there is a possibility it may run as it looks like the reason it went to the salvage yard is a hit to the front end. however i have no key for it. i do have another parts car with a key and an ignition switch. is there a way to hot wire a car just to try and get it running? or what is involved with swapping an ignition switch if you dont have a key for one of them? any ideas are appreciated... thank you.

hey skip, ive noticed you seem to know what you are talking about on electrical stuff. 87 gl blower motor does not work. actually it blows if i direct wire it to battery so i know blower motor is good and i know 4 way switch on dash is good. i remember you [i think] talking about 2 resistors somewhere? 1 for 1-2 speed and 1 for 3-4 speed? im thinking this could be the problem, or anyone have any other ideas? if your not skip you can answer also, i know there are many subaru brainiacs out there. i just seem to recall him talking about this at one time in the past. i think he even posted a pic. thank you anyone for any replies. -
i had a thread yesterday about tranny puking? fluid pours out bottom front of tranny only when car is running. not from a blown tranny line or from the vent on top. do these things have a front seal, maybe where the torque convt. installs on tranny? diff fluid is not contaminated. anyone have a diagram or any ideas? tranny still works if you add fluid, but it pours out as fast as it goes in. this possible for avg. joe to fix if it is a seal? can you buy the seal seperate? i have pulled trannys before but never been inside one. no diagrams in chiltons or haynes. thanks for any input.

snowstormer replied to snowstormer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks for the ideas. i will check it out tomorrow after work. hopefully it will be above zero. i will post what i find. -
i was driving my wifes 91 loyale today. 3at auto 124k was working perfect. recent fluid and filter change a month ago. goin about 30 mph and lost forward motion. stopped car and looked underneath, couple qts of fluid spewing on the ground... now it has no forward or reverse. think its terminal? its about -10 below out right now, won't look at it till tomorrow. :(

gen 1 brat vs gen 2 interior room
snowstormer replied to snowstormer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well calbez, i guess i do owe you for answering my questions about the auto to 5spd d/r swap last summer. if it wasnt for you i still wouldnt have a clutch pedal in my wagon. maybe i will keep the gen 1 and get a gen 2 when i get my taxes back... always good to add another to the stable, right? -
gen 1 brat vs gen 2 interior room
snowstormer replied to snowstormer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
man, that is really something i would have to think about.. i really like my 81. but i like the gen 2 brats also. what can you tell me about yours? is it a 4spd or auto? rusty? -
i know on ford and general motor auto transmissions, when you install the torque convt onto the tranny input shaft you have to be sure to "engage it" completely onto the shaft. you turn the converter while "pushing" it onto the shaft as it has to engage like 3 sets of splines. you turn and push until you "feel" it go on 3 steps. dont know if soob convts are the same but if convt was not engaged all the way on the shaft it could cause your symptoms, could be why bell housing bolts loosened after install as convt could have "moved back" after spinning? could be something else but just a thought...

being as i am kinda tall, about 6' 3". i was wondering... i have a gen 1 brat [81]. its in real nice shape and i really like it, however there is one thing that bothers me about it. it does not have much leg room. as there are no subarus around my area, i do not have a gen 2 brat to compare it to. does anyone have any opinions on interior size, leg room, head room etc. on the later brat compared to the earlier brat? thanks for any input.

Heater Core gone Bad?!
snowstormer replied to trooperjeep's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
looks like you are getting lots of good replies here. just a thought... is there plenty of air blowing out the vents? a lot of air that is cold, or not much air? i have a 91 loyale, just got it in the fall, sat for a couple weeks, [i live in the woods]. kinda had fair heat but not great. then yesterday wife came home and said "no heat". rad is good, thermo good, heater core hot, etc.blower blowing loudly but not much airflow. took out blower. chewed up car insulation clogging everything.[mouse] cleaned it out, car has awesome heat now. i have had mice in heaters before and you can usully tell, smell or little bits of leaves etc. come out when you turn on the fan. this time nothing so i never expected it. is it possible there is crap plugging up the airflow somewhere, even up by the heater core? -
you might want to check and see if the choke is opening all the way, should be closed when you start it cold and slowly open as car warms up. it should open fully when engine is warm. if not, this is a simple reason why it may be running too rich. just a thought.

what size? (block heaters)
snowstormer replied to Martin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
man, i feel your pain martin. i had three block heaters to put in my subes this fall. i got 2 of the plugs out ok, they were tough but got them out without stripping them. the third one on my 87 gl just would not come out. i tried everything, torch, impact, etc. finally ended up totally stripping it. i more or less gave up on it but saw this thread. i kinda like miles foxes idea of welding a nut on it. sounds like it may actually work. miles, have you actually done this? -
