  1. I can't believe no one has mentioned 3M Adhesive Remover. We used it in my used car lot to remove dealer stickers, etc. It works great and absolutely will not harm your paint.
  2. A guy in Iowa had one for sale on here not too long ago with, I believe, 80K on it. Cheap ,too, as I remember. Do a search in the sale section. Glad you got it, Lyons and, no, don't put a 1.6 in there. Be patient. The EA81's are around. Post up some pix when you get a chance. I've been dying to see more of that car!
  3. So.....I guess we will never no the answer to this one?
  4. Me either, uberoo. That's why I'm looking for an 80's model. I was told that you could get the stick shift 4WD/FWD in Europe but not here. Don't know if it's a Hi/Lo or not.
  5. I'm a firm believer in the 4WD Hi/Lo tranny Subarus. If they disappear and Subaru doesn't ever make one again, I will likely not buy a full time AWD.
  6. So.....anyone find out about this car? Lyons buy it? Someone else buy it? The lady used to put it on CL, then take it off only to put it back on again. I have a hunch that with Lyons' interest someone may have bought it this time. Haven't heard from Lyons since he did all the stuff to it to test it etc. I would love to know where that car went.
  7. I had serious communication problems with that lady. Geeze....hope she didn't sell it to someone else!
  8. Lyons must have bought that car....don't see it on CL anymore. Wish he would let us know if he did and let us know how it turned out.
  9. You say it smokes on start up....what color? It COULD be, and I'm not saying it is, a blown head gasket or crack that seals up when the engine heats up. You describe a typical symptom. Does it run a little rough when starting it cold?
  10. Yup....she did come on here but she is not good with writing on the puter. She loves the car and I always wondered, if it runs OK as she says except for a high idle, why she parked it for 2 years? Anyway....I hope it's ok and you get it. It will be fun to track along with you since I had an interest in it for so long. Good luck, Lyons & keep us posted.
  11. Hey, Lyons....did you buy it? I would like to track that car to find out if it has serious problems or just minor things. I looked at it for so long I would like to keep track of it if possible.
  12. Hi Lyons.....I have been looking at that car for a LONG time. Just ask GD. Too far away for me to check out though. I couldn't find anyone in your area to check it out for me. In my conversations with her I was under the impression that there are engine problems with that car but then, when she re-advertised it, they were no longer mentioned. She started out firm at $1000 and left it on CL for a long, long time without selling it. She has now dropped to $850. My take with this nearly 200K mile engine is that I would assume the engine is no good and plan for that. If the engine turns out repairable I'm that much ahead. From what you are now saying about the rest of the car, namely no rust, I would probably buy it planning on a new engine and bringing the car up to it's original shape as much as possible. It all depends on the money you have to drop into the car if it turns out to have serious problems. I have been waiting to see if anyone would go look at the car and report here. I thank you. Good luck! I hope you let me know if you buy it.
  13. Yup.....sand blasting can cause warpage if not done properly. I've seen it happen more than once. Even done carefully some wheels will warp. I've seen exhaust manifolds warp, too.
  14. You said that the fuel filter clogged a few times and then you said that the gas tank was close to empty. I'm thinking that the tank has sediment and or rust in it and when it gets close to empty it is picking that stuff up. I have seen this in many old cars. Not saying that this is your problem but the symptoms are the same.
  15. Well....I have been looking and LOOKING for a early 80's hatch. Sounds like you are going to do some repairs etc. I don't know what you paid for the car, but, if you change your mind ....I will buy that car from you at a good profit to you.
  16. Brian....you mentioned in your previous thread that this car has an EA71 engine. I thought all GL's from 81 had the EA81. Are you certain that this car has the EA71 engine??
  17. YAY! Yup....a coil can be very misleading. Glad you found the problem!
  18. I'm going to repeat a post that I made when I first joined up here. It is so appropriate for this thread. .................... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks, turbone. I lived up a crazy steep half mile driveway so I bought one. New Years eve around 1983 it was snowing hard and there was about 2 feet on the ground. I had another couple in the back of the hatch and I needed something from the "house on the hill". The other couple couldn't believe I was going to go up that driveway. When I say crazy steep you can believe it. Many people wouldn't come up that drive in the summer! The front of the hatch was actually plowing snow up to the grill. I dropped it into low range and never spun a wheel all the way up. 2 days later that couple went out and bought a new Subie.
  19. Curious, ricearu....your EA82 runs and does you right....why, then, do you hate it? What year and model car is it in?
  20. Thanks, GD. I THOUGHT that was what you meant but didn't want anyone to misunderstand your statement.
  21. Not to hijack the thread but....GD, did you just say that the EA82 is a worthless engine? Inquiring minds want to know.
  22. You said it yourself....you were always reaching for the keys to the Subie. Not many of us get a second chance.
