  1. Hi All, So I'm looking at replacing my EA82 wagon with a 1994 EJ22T Touring wagon but I have some questions. I've never owned one of this generation of cars before and am reletivly clueless as to what to look for in this used car. Are there any common issues with this car? Engine? Turbo? Any dead give aways to indicate a lemon? Former race car? The car looks to be in great shape. Good body, 220k km, very clean. From what I've been reading the EJ22T is a great engine. I've always loved the EA82 and would like to experience the EA82T but I just can't find one near me in decent shape. Tips? Advice? I know this one will go quiclky and would like to have a look at it tomorrow. (Sunday) Thanks in advance! Marko
  2. I wonder if the pcv stink may be coming from there. I think I can plumb the tubing back to the intake to reburn it. I will try. It just might help a bit
  3. yes on the vapor canister. yes on the rusted out. yes on the exhaust leak. The car used to stink of PCV gas but I think I've taken care of that. The exhaust broke downstream of the catalytic converter and I repaired it. (hackjob) Now I think because it is a jacketed pipe the exhaust is getting between the inner and the outer pipe and making it up into the engine bay perhaps. I only had pipe matching the outer pipe's diameter. Then I stored it for like 4 years. I honestly did not think I'd be using this car after that but my commute and conditions at my new job require it. I had hoped there was a VERY easy fix to this because I don't want to put another dime into this rustbucket. (other than gas) I'm looking for a body to put all my guts into. Thanks for the tips!
  4. awesome! that's exactly what I'll do.
  5. Hi Everyone, I getting a lot of exhaust smell in my 88 gl wagon. If I have the fan on and am sitting at a light or just idling, I get an exhaust smell in the cabin. If I hit the recirc air button, there is less smell. If I am driving at speed there is no problem. Does the cabin air come from the grilles below the windshield? Are there any other points of entry for the air? somewhere that the exhaust may be entering? I have added weatherstripping to the underside of the hood to try to help the seal that is already there. I have to get this figured out quick as I am getting stupider evry tiim I driv this kar. Thanks Marko
  6. Thanks for the reply. So, if it's cable driven the whole way through the oil contamination theory doesn't explain it. Now I'm even more confused. The ratio should be maintained at all times. Maybe the speedo has been corrected in the past by a previous owner. More to think of.....
  7. Thanks for the replies guys! I'M very impressed with the explanation of the speedo cable and lube contamination. Never heard of that one before nor would I have ever thought of it myself! As for the friend helping me with calculating my speed, don't get me started. Lol. I had my wife helping me with that one. She just didn't get idea god bless her. I asked her to drive exactly the speed limit on a variety of roads during our drive home so that I could record the speeds and revs accordingly. After an hour drive home I was no closer to understanding my status. That's when I got on here. I did know however that the difference in circumfrance would be minimal though closer to the actual tire/speedo ratio. It just seems so much worse with the rubber. I do love the explanation though. Thanks for the help again. Over the years I've really gotten so much help with my soobies. I really do appreciate it. Mark
  8. Hello all, I just had new tires installed on my 88 gl wagon and I think my speedo is whacked. I used to have 175 70's on there and replaced them with the spec size tire 185 70's on 13" rims. I expected to have a more accurate measure of my speed with the spec sized tires on there but after a couple hundred km's on the highway today, I think the speedo is out even more than before. I was reading way over the limit(20-30km) but was getting passed like a pylon all day. Along with quite a few stink eyes! I think the speedo is reading WAY faster than actual speed. Even with the larger tires????? Am I out to lunch on the size? I read it off the door so thought I had it right. Any help? How can I figure this out. Might I have a altered speedo great ratio? The car only has to last the rest of the summer then im going to part it out. The body is falling off.....I don't want the parts going to the wrecker. I'll have a couple of EA82's a dual range 4x4 tranny and LSD dif. Any help with the sped question? Takers on the parts? Thx.
  9. LOL! Good point. Those HG's did hold though. If fact, they're still in the car now. Pretty lucky for such poor procedure. "USE AT OWN RISK" LOL
  10. In the past I used a shallow socket on a loose wobbler extension. I had to thread the bolt down by hand almost all the way so I could get the socket on there. I got lucky I guess...
  11. Hi Everyone, I'm going to look at a 88 GL wagon/Loyal tomorrow for $500. The body looks great in the photos and is what I'm most interested in. One problem may be the wiring. The guy tells me that when he turns the wipers on, the signal lights flash Does this sound like trouble? I have had a few of these wagons but have never encountered any wiring issues. I'm hoping to swap my DR 5spd into the car because the body is falling off of mine but I don't want a huge project including re-wiring the whole car. Any tips or advice would be great! Thanks Marko
  12. Hi All, I'm looking at a 200 legacy wagon but am not too familiar with them. What engine code is in these cars? EJ22? Is this an interference engine? My wife can't drive a stick so we're looking at an automatic. Any troubles there? Other than the lack of a five spd! Do they have any notable issues. Timing belts perhaps? If anyone has any tips, please let me know! Thanks Marko
  13. Here's to no belt covers! I had the timing slip on the highway once. Popped the hood and got her all straightened out then back on the road. No tow truck, no big deal at all. At least if it is the belts, it's a NON interference engine! Congrats on the grad. Good luck with the sub.
  14. EMP proof eh? Is there something about to happen that we should all know about? Some large atomic bomb or something? And the only car that runs is your subie! M
  15. Ouch! I hate to see a great body go to scrap. I have a rusty 88 gl wagon. Driveline and interior are great but the full swap would be a heavy project. I just keep looking for a mint wagon. They are very few around here these days. Good luck.
  16. I've driven 100 km or more with the 'low fuel' light on many times. I'd start to worry if I had much farther than that to the next station though. These cars are so good on gas, it's easy to overlook filling them up. My best is 800 km on one fill! Marko
  17. My guess would be the extra weight. I used to get all the guys in the car for golf games and it was a heavy load. My 88 Wagon would slosh around the road quite badly. Almost as though the tires were going flat. Hope that's all it was! Marko
  18. I have the cabin air recirculation. Is that about the same as plugging the vacuum line? With the dog in the car, If I'm not bringing fresh air in to the car, the windows fog up pretty good. I usually leave the air recirc thing shut off. I'll get in to the heater ducting tomorrow and see if the core is plugged. It's all working great since the flush but i'm curious to see what's going on in there. I'll let you know if anything interesting turns up!
  19. OMG! I need a moist towel. Is that flat 12 for real? If not, it's a great picture! If so, What the hell would they have put that in? And, where can I get one for my 88 wagon.
  20. I use 10-40 in my high mileage (300k) 88 EA-82 all year round. Using the 10-40 helps with oil consumption compared to the 10-30. Other than some high idle probs the engine is sound as a pound. Winter and summer! 10- 40 goes in the engine. WD-40 goes in the distributor. I sure hope so anyways!
  21. SO here's the update, I have cleaned the HC with a strong vinegar solution. We had a really warm day so I have added a flush tee and flushed the entire cooling system with the garden hose. Adding the flush tee helps with burping the system too! Added a new 60/40 mix of coolant. Good for -50 ish I'd bet. (I'll measure tonight) And......... Holy COW! it's freakin' hot in there! Success Thanks for the tips everyone. Next, I'd like to investigate the core to see if there's a buildup of debris in there and am wondering if I can get in there to see it without pulling the dash. I plan to check the damper door to see if it's functioning properly too. Any more tips? I love these cars! Now I'm off to get some booze for the honkey game tonight! Cheers All!
  22. thanks for the replies. I knew the "free beer" thing would work! I have added the cardboard in front of the rad . This is normal for me when the temp gets to -20 C The engine/rad temp seems to be great and I have heat in the heater core too. But, when I turn on the heater fan, it will first blow very hot and then cools down. This makes me think that I have poor flow through the core. (the things I learned in plumbing school:lol:) More air flow through the core brings the temp down. I have the hardware to do the core flush but was thinking that a caustic flush may help break down any scale that may be clogging everything up. We Canadians need our heaters to work and this one just isn't cutting it. Thanks again! Marko
  23. sorry to hear of your loss. I've always thought that no one would want my old wagon. I guess I'd better think twice about parking my 88 in a crappy neighbourhood. It's a shame to lose your car so some tweaker can get high for 15 minutes. It's also a shame to see how bad the meth problem has gotten in the NW states. I hear that in Spokane, 80% of crime is meth related. Good luck getting your ride back and good luck to the police in their efforts combating the meth epidemic.
  24. Hi everyone, I'm suffering a car with no heat. I'm certain that my heater core is clogged up and I'm wondering if there is a recommended chemical for cleaning. I have already done a cooling system flush with a prestone flushing product but the heater core is still providing very little heat. (low flow) I plan to by-pass the core so that I can blow out any crap in there and am wondering if there is a recommended product to do so. Of course, I don't want to use anything that will harm the core. I'd rather change the engine than replace the core! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  25. I've always had the SPFI so I know nothing about the carbs or whether or not the blocks are the same. I'm sure you'll have all the info you need soon enough though. These guys have all the answers! Helped/saved me many times. Cheers!
