  1. I have most the tools I need, and plenty of time. If i go to a junkyard (pry go to pullapart) i can get most everything from the yards for $400-500. Plus all my materials and such. I think i can do it for under $1k.
  2. here is what i have planned: Ford 8.8 IRS Rear diff in the rear, full double a-arm suspension, 97+ f150 4wd front spindle/brakes (yes, front spindles on the rear, would be anchored for no movement, but would be capable of being used on rear wheel steer down the road), custom axles (Unless factory tbird axles are long enough), 12-14 inches of travel Ford 8.8 IRS Rear diff in the FRONT, full double a-arm suspension, 97+ f150 4wd front spindle/brakes,custom axles 12-14 inches of travel I feel it wouldnt be much more difficult then straight axle. I would make a custom crossmembers that would have all the mounting points for everything but bolt to factory locations. Would probably have the top shock mounts attached to the subframe so the unibody isnt experience the beating of long travel. like this bmw only with a subie:
  3. ive always been a big fan of fully independent suspension. its something i think would be superior over straight axles if it didnt have the dependability issues. that and its always been my dream to race in the baja...so maybe someday.
  4. Micheal, If the strut lift pieces dont turn out like I want ill be hitting you up for a set. Your lift kit looks really nice, but if I dont start using this $1700 lincoln tig welder and my other tools my wife is gonna skin me :-\
  5. Ive had these thoughts filling my head for about a week now. Maybe when I get my new job I can go ahead with this plan... Car will be based on my 83 GL Wagon EJ22/25 frakenmotor, 5 Speed D/R Nissan 720 transfer case Heres where it gets crazy: Ford 8.8 IRS Rear diff in the rear, full double a-arm suspension, 97+ f150 4wd front spindle/brakes (yes, front spindles on the rear), custom axles, 12-14 inches of travel Ford 8.8 IRS Rear diff in the FRONT, full double a-arm suspension, 97+ f150 4wd front spindle/brakes,custom axles 12-14 inches of travel 31 inch tires Full Cage Truck and Trailer to haul it to the Baja 1000.
  6. Mcbrat, do you think this would work if I simply swapped out the front and rear subaru diffs for some ford 8.8 IRS diffs from tbirds/cougars, etc?
  7. How much I love this site. I have been members on every forum for every car I have ever owned, as well as several motorcycle forums (both backyard customs and drag racing forums) and this site is hands down the closest and most helpful community I have seen. Now i just wish more of these old subarus were on my coast!
  8. right, i realized that after i posted it. thanks guys...i love this site. I said i wasnt gonna lift my car, but seems as tho i have been bitten by the offroad bug again.
  9. like this? ignore my HORRIBLE paint skills. this would be if you were looking at the front of the car.
  10. thanks, it indeed was. helped some. My big question is this...Did he flip over a rear subaru differential for the front, or is it sitting in its normal orientation?
  11. Ok so I know how to make them now, just wondering what degree i need to make them at...and the angle should start at the top and go out to the sides if you are sitting in the drivers seat, correct?
  12. Anyone have any pics of homebuilt strut tower lift blocks? This is for an EA81 what angle do I need to need the tubes to be?
  13. thats the plan. id like to level it out. pry go 27 inch tires. I DO need to extend the shifter levers and the steering shaft for 4 inch lift, right?
  14. i will be doing a complete body lift, not just the strut tubes.
  15. how much for just a pair of 4 inch strut "Extenders" for an ea81? everything else i can tackle myself.
  16. mcbrat you seem to be the guy who knows about lifts. is the do it yourself route fairly easy? i seen the how to guide on the offroading subaru site. only thing im concerned with is the strut tower extenders. i have a tig welder tube bender and chop saw in the garage, so i should be able to do it. also...if I wanted to level it out, would I go 4 inch lift in the front and 3 inch in the rear?
  17. will the fronts work on an ea81?
  18. Working on an ea81 wagon here. I was wondering what everyone suggests for a nice build that will serve double duty as a daily driver and part trail rig. I live in Ohio so our trails are not crazy, mainly alot of fields, trails through woods, abandoned rail road beds, things of that nature. Im looking for something that looks good and wont eat axles. What does everyone suggest? I was thinking 2 or 4 inch lift with 27 inch tires.
  19. thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it! one more for ya...whats the speed at around 3500-4000rpm in 4th gear in 4 low?
  20. Getting close to getting all my parts for the manual/4wd swap. Would like to know a little bit on how the 4 speed d/r works (using the 4 speed for now) is it like a pick up transfer case with 2 high, 4 high, 4 low, and a neutral? can you shift from high/low on the fly or need to be in neutral? can you shift from 4wd to 2wd on the fly? when in 2wd is it FWD or RWD? thanks.
