if you shake the cat and hear everyting in it moves, then the cat is gone. even if a cat is broken, the engine can revs up normaly. i had a car were the cat was broken, and i didn't have trouble with the engine to rev up. try to shake the cat and hear if there is some parts in the cat that's moving arround in there. -
i did find the problem i have whit the high beam. it was only a sreew on steering column. i removed that sreew and the problem was fixed. the sreew shortcutet the high beam switch for me.

tel your father to go too a junkyard and get a new watherpump there. they wont cost 600 bucks there. it is second hand part but it may work very well. -
i dont thing your crazy or insane WJM, i like the plan you have. i i have a plan too, to increase hp on engine. and so far i happy with my calutaion on hp. i'm gona stop on about 250 hp on an ea82t engine, it's more then enough for me. there is one thing i have to say too you WJM, and it's like this. GO FOR IT:)

yes it can be done, you can use both 4 and 5 speed tranny. the axels are i'm noth sure of they fitt right on. the axel from tranny to rear end may perhaps be changed. i will say that you should use a d/r tranny. -

the barrel cant be taken apart after what i now, the only thing i can recomend is to get a new one j/y. you can check the conection on the barrel, see if it's lose or it's dirty.

it can be the waterpump, but chech the coolant hoses. it can be a small hole in one of them. -
can be the carb is adjusted too lean and it get to litle gasoline. try to check it out

my 86 subes towingweight is 1140 kg, and i have an ea 82 carb engine. so i dont think you can tow somthing thats hevyer than that. -

i agree with you wjm, it can be done. i have heard it my self and i've heard that the trans can do 300 hp with out trouble.
