  1. My EA81 engine is 1992. In Oz the EA81 came out in our Brumby (Brat) from about 1980 to 1994 in carbie version only. From 1988 onwards eA81's had the larger valves but only 1mm larger. The larger valve model here had black valve covers as opposed to the early versions that had the blue covers. The EA82 came out around 1988 in other models till 1995 I think and only in carbie form. No solid lifters here.
  2. I have just ordered one from www.rockauto.com lol. Thanks anyway TomRhere also ordered a coolant temp gauge as I believe they cause similar issues. The symptom of the trouble is purely low power output. the engine starts perfectly (best starting engine I've had), runs smooth, economical etc. But power is down about 30%. Idle was a little low but since the timing was set correctly with green test plugs in it has idled better. The MAF is the only thing my technician thinks is suspect.
  3. yeh Ivans imports, they are all the same, certainly need to order them with the alloy body. found some on the net, used of course. prices range from $40 to $550. We will know more after sunday as a friend and I are going to do some testing.
  4. ok, so there are at least 3 types of sensor and they all have slightly different matching bases. So have to seek out a MAF for a Loyale 86-87 model with alloy housing in good nick. A later one would be ok 88-92 if the alloy housing is together with it. Anyone list a junkyard for me they know has these in USA? if so please post the details most web sites that advertise them have "listing ended" on them.
  5. mmmm. would make sense. they look otherwise identical. means if I can grind the extra plastic off the 'new' one and make it fit, providing it seals ok (bit of silicone if needed) then I might be able to use it. otherwise have to track down the same number 1 type or the number 2 type with the alloy housing piece as a unit
  6. Well what a saga this is turning out to be. Ordered the used MAF sensor. advertsied on Ebay as a 1985-1994 unit. Numbers stamped on it the same- identical to mine being 86-94 SUBARU MASS AIR FLOW METER 22680 AA100 AFH38-01 Got it in the mail today in Oz. Not the same. above the letters ABC and D near the connector mount is the number "2". mine has the number "1". there appears to be at least two types. Almost identical in size the purchase don has a slightly larger cylindrical area that fits into the alloy mount and a larger base on that area so it wont fit in. tried grinding the plastic away and no good. So, not really the sellers fault as you'd think they were all the same. now am hunting for my version. looks like only one with the alloy mount can be purchased. ho hum. purchased one on the left.see the larger plastic base bit This next pic...you can see the number 2 inside the indentation. my original one has the number 1- the ONLY difference in numbers.
  7. is the earlier harness. harness was modified before I got it...like a kit. had resister on it already. dizzy modified etc.
  8. For what its worth just like to mention that this forum has been fantastic. Newby to SPFI with my trike and you guys have helped me understand this system with your knowledge. - great!
  9. yeh intake is stock. MAF was cleaned. should get the other MAF in couple days to try out. Like the Fuel injector guy said, and I tend to agree, that the engine runs perfectly in all aspects excepts power output. its smooth, easy starting, economical etc etc just its like 2 thirds throttle.
  10. well thankyou pressingonward, really appreciate the offer. Will see if the next MAF makes any difference. if it doesnt then I have two options- buy a new one or likely my issue is from a different source. We will see soon. should have the unit here in a few days. while we are waiting...here is the trike on youtube with over 25,000 hits. its when it had the weber carb before the supercharger. It's filmed in Strathbogie Victoria Australia.....down under!
  11. thanks. O2 sensor was new and installed about 8 inches form the engine exit. all vacuum was checked and ok. timing was out just a little and adjusted. does idle now although just a little on the low side and IAS adjustment doesnt make it idle faster. will do some voltage and ground checks. other than that will see when the used one hits our shores.
  12. My recent conversion of my EA81 to SPFI has gone well. The only symptoms now that are an issue is about 60% power...down 40%. Runs smooth etc. Took it to a guy that specialise sin injector systems. Bare in mind we never had the SPFI system her ein Oz, in any Subaru. He checked the conversion and found all items like fuel pump location, pressure and timing to be ok. He diagnosed (95% certain) a faulty MAF. The MAF was very slow to react and isnt operating correctly according to his experience. Have purchased a secondhand one form your neck of the woods. Can anyone tell me how to test it? what are the operating details of a correctly operating unit? I've been told that people that test these usually tst a new one and have those details on them whenever a unit comes in for inspection- allowing them a benchmark to go by. But in Oz, this isnt possible as there are none around. Any help appreciated.
  13. thankyou guys. yeh, I know you like to sleep lol. I was joking there. the engine has good iridium plugs, new 8.8mm leads etc. the iridium plugs are 44 thou gap type. could put the old standard ones back in and try it. test connectors arent connected. cap and rotor good. Who would ever know how many years since this unit was last running. It came from Alaska originally, likely got to the west coast and sent here. so will use some fuel additive and see how it goes. Timing was set at 20 degrees. thanks again
  14. lol 4 replies and they're all mine. Here is the drawing of the IAS. seems I dont have many problems now. except it feels a little down on power only making 60mph in top gear (auto) injector cleaner could be the answer.
  15. I have had the following answer from a fellow mate in Oz "Yeah the screw is just a bypass for the butterfly. Wind it out and it lets more air through making the engine idle faster. Mixtures are set by the ECU and there is no adjustment." If thats the case I dont seem to have a big problem here!!
  16. I've had one guy tell me its jets adjustment. then I shouldnt have touched it. my ride was great- very smooth but 60mph top speed. and when I go from full throttle to mid throttle the speed increases a bit. must be rich. any suggestions? I dont want to screw it in and make it all too lean.
  17. Ok well the conversion is complete and running. please find below a picture of the tB. there is a screw top right hand corner of the picture, a large spade screwdriver fits it, what is its purpose and how do I adjust it? The bottom left hand of the same picture is the throttle stop and I assume that is the idle adjustment which I had to adjust to get it to idle at 700-800rpm (it was 450rpm and threatening to stall). Finally. I had an issue with starting it today. Checked everything and came to th conclusion it was flooded. So disconnected the fuel pump and it started. Reconnected fuel pump - no more starting issues. Why would it flood? Are these easy to flood or could it be a fuel issue- eg injector allowing too much fuel into tB? thanks in advance.
  18. thanks ivan imports. with the adapter plate the timing marks go out with the flywheel.. but the crank pulley has 360mm circumference so 1mm is 1 degree. hence 20mm = 20 degrees. will be making up my own timing marks also. being out of a car from Alaska who know how long it was sitting idle. regards
  19. thankyou guys for your input. A sticky injector seems the reason. Hot wired the fuel pump then hot wored the injector positive and it clicked but no spray. Clicked it several times and presto. Spray!!!. looks like a fair bit of injector cleaner the first few tank fulls is in order. After start I had time to do the timing (my radiator was out waiting for a replacement) to 20 degrees and rev it. Was very rich, black smoke everywhere then it settled and runs great. thanks again. much appreciated.
  20. SPFI dizzy used and it was supplied modified in the kit. Kit was purchased from a local guy in Melbourne that lost interest. The return is on the top and have jumped the fuel pump lead to find the fuel pumps straight through to the tank so all ok there. Ignition amplifier module? cant say I've come across that one. We do have spark though and the engine kicks when a small amount of fuel is poured down the throat. Hence our suspicion that the injector or fuel regulator isnt working correctly. I have temp connected the fuel pump so it is pumping through to the tank and tried to start it with no success. Thanks guys.
  21. Conversion complete. engine was running well prior to conversion. Had a mate (El Freddo) attend today to analyse why it wasnt starting. After timing and firing order was confirmed as ok, timing put on TDC. Fuel pump working. ECU has no codes as trouble. Engine kicked with bit of fuel drop down the throat as if wanting to start. has spark. ElFreddo thinks the injector or regulator has a problem will seek out an expert to assess this. Asking if anyone has had injector trouble or fuel regulator problems?? Before I take off the throttle body are there any suggestions.
  22. thanks for that guys. Northwet- will be checking the firing soon. had that issue once before. Printed out the codes. thankyou.
