  1. We use this to get around and to the lake at my inlaws.
  2. You should really be looking for a strut and spring paired up. Most coilover setups have a shorter strut paired up with the spring, so the strut still has travel when the spring is spun down. Many times when you put a sleeve setup on a stock height strut you'll lower the spring too much and you'll be riding on the bump stop.
  3. You mean camber right? Looks like you have major negative camber....
  4. i think its got to do with the egr? i capped off my egr on the intake, deleted it completely. then plugged that hose off, it ran fine.
  5. Ha, I'll have to check it out. I had put air ride into my wife's vw gti, it can in handy when we had a slow leak in one of the tires.
  6. That's on my list, oem coil. I sorted through the records today. Within the last 20k, the timing belt was done, head gasket/water pump/radiator replaced, oil pump and lifters replaced, fuel tank/filler neck/fuel pump/charcoal canister replaced, brakes redone, air shocked replaced with conventional, and other miscellaneous stuff done, all at the dealer. This older couple took ridiculous care of this car. I just hope the grandson didn't completely destroy in the 5000 miles he had it....
  7. here it is. not in immaculate shape, but not too bad for the north east. Untitled by phillipcdube, on Flickr Untitled by phillipcdube, on Flickr Untitled by phillipcdube, on Flickr Untitled by phillipcdube, on Flickr this is a marvel of engineering. luckely he still had the oem setup so i'm gonna probably put it back on if i cant fix this. Untitled by phillipcdube, on Flickr coolant is shooting from under the intake here. Untitled by phillipcdube, on Flickr i thought this was from a massive oil leak, turns out to the "Rusty Jones" anti corrosion stuff. Untitled by phillipcdube, on Flickr you think these are for the original fog lights? its got the switch on the dash, and the window sticker said it came with them..... 8. Good to know. I was planning on keeping the rear diff and all the axles from the donor car just in case.
  9. I would say 90% of my mechanic experience is with vw/Audi. I've done 4 auto to manual swaps, 3 vw's and 1 Audi. I can't imagine this car being as much of a bear as the A6 was. It took me some time, but i got done and we're still driving it. It fought me at every turn though, Audi requires so many special tools and there is zero room to work under the hood. I'm not saying this is gonna be easy, but as long as I'm not using a mirror to find half the bolts I need to remove, I'll be happy. And I'm super psyched I don't need to hook a computer to it to recode the ecu and get it to turn on.
  10. It's essentially a "whoosh" when you let off the gas. Nothing loud, I was driving slow with the radio off and the windows down so I could really listen to the car. Trying to see if there was any old noises, rattles, ect. Now getting back to the diff noise, does the story not make sense to any of you? He saying it was run dry, made a bang, refilled with fluid, and was still driveable, just noisy. I heard the noise, it's a grinding noise that got worse with speed. I've never heard of someone blowing or seizing a diff and it still functions..... Is this possible with these units?
  11. Ya, in the dirrection of air flow it's before the MAF. My mind works funky sometimes when discribing things. And I'm sure doesn't have a BOV, I just assumed it had a diverter. I've never seen a turbo setup that doesn't have a way to release boost when you come off throttle. Interesting, I'll need to dig into it and see what's up.
  12. The diff was diagnosed by the PO's shop, the kid (clerance and 's grandson) ran it out of diff fluid. He said it made a bang, the shop added fluid and it still runs, now noisy. I guess it could be something else, but I'm 99% sure its in the tranny. It's speed related, not rpm. As long as it's not coming from the engine I don't care, all the auto stuff is coming out. And I don't hear the turbo per say, but you can hear the diverter valve. He put an autozone cone filter on it after the air flow sensor, so maybe it's louder cause of that.
  13. I'll look into that hose. Did your's come with the dual range 5 speed? And yes it definitely has a turbo, not only does it say it on both sides of the car, the rear hatch, and the original window sticker, I can hear it when driving it. But your right about the tranny, the owners manual is saying its a 3 speed. I've only had it up to 30ish so I really didn't notice how many it had while driving.
  14. I do plan on taking a few pics here in the next couple days, ill upload them when I do. And I have all the records, but I plan on doing the thermostat and pump anyway. Maybe even the radiator upgrade.
  15. I am the proud new owner of my dream Subaru, a GL-10. It's an 87 with 115k, originally owned by an elderly couple (Clarence and Elinore). Picked it up for $500, and at that price it's fair to say it has some issues. The body is fair for being a New England car, it was "rusty jones" treated back when it was new, I found the paperwork. Still has some rust on the lower rear quarters. The 4 speed auto is bad, well, the diff leaked dry and now it makes a massive racket, but still drives. The engine starts right up, revs nice, sounds great, no CEL. But, its got a coolant leak leaving antifreeze on the top of the engine. So, plans are to swap in the DR 5 speed from my 86 GL, diagnose the coolant leak, fix the rust, then use it mostly to get to the mountains in snow storms next winter. I've done some research and have come across a bit of info about the lack of cooling from the stock system, head gasket issues, ect. My plans aren't to make a beast of this car, I just want it to run as its supposed to. Any extra maintenance i should do this summer to keep the reliability up? What should I be keeping from my donor car aside from the transmission stuff? Any parts in particular that are known to fail or hard to get? Would the long block from my 86 work in my ea82t if something catastrophic would happen?
  16. thanks dude. i've been getting better with my sheet metal welding, its taken me a bit to get a good feel for it. its definitely an art that takes mastering. this car has given me a bunch of practice.... i've come across a bunch of old legacy's for real cheap. missed one down the road a couple miles by a few hours. i'm getting picky/lazy, many are 50-70 miles away. i'd rather not have to get the trailer to haul it or 20 day plates. something close i'll take my chances and limp it home after dark. i'll have one within a month or 2.
  17. so i'm pretty much done welding up holes. gonna por15 the rest that's starting to show rust poking through. nothing major. i found a few more holse in the drivers side rear wheel well. welded them up. i proceeded to weld a bit more on the rocker. the mounting point for the rear "suspension beam" or whatever its called. managed to catch the carpet on the back seat foot well on fire, which melted the wiring harness running to the tank and rear lights. ************en awesome. spent a couple hours fixing that and its all better now..... now i need to make some decisions about my engine swap. i've been searching craigslist for donor cars and i've found everything from legacy 2.2's, outback 2.5's, and foresters for cheap. i'm definately gonna go with a donor car.... any advice on whats gonna be my best bet? i'd like to eventually supercharge whatever i swap in, i have alot of experience with boosting vw's but never subarus.
  18. 6 months ago when i started looking for a subaru, my wife started calling them "lesbaru's". we're vw/audi people, she felt she needed to bust my balls about it. i was driving it yesterday and some lady was tailgating me, i looked into the rear view mirror, she was taking a pic with her phone. she gave me the thumbup.......
  19. i had to apply for the plate, and have a explanation. i told them that my french grandmother used to call my old subaru, "Les Baru". they bought it, but, it will only take a few complaints for them to recall it. as for plans, its definitely gonna be completely bedlined by the time summer comes back around. i dont use the roll on or rattle can, i have the gun to shoot it through my compressor. i did it to a vw i had a few years back and it came out awesome. you can get color matched rhynoliner for less then $200, so it'll be cheap and durable. after that i'm gonna do the engine. still going back and forth about getting a early ej22 so i can put a webber on it, or just go straight to FI. i usually by complete donor cars when i do swaps, part out/scrap the rest to make my money back, so going to straight to FI is starting to sound more like the right thing to do cause i'll have everything i need. then i'll do the suspension and wheels. get some 6 lug 15's with a pretty beefy tire. i still need to do my research on lifting it though. i'd like atleast 4", 5" would be perfect. i've read a bit about spacing the subframe and all that, still got to figure out what i'm gonna do for struts and springs. on the cheap obviously.
  20. small update with some pics. i've been driving it on and off, getting terrible gas mileage. 17-18mpg off the first couple tanks. the father in law and i tinkered with the carb, lots of stuff unplugged and capped off from the PO. it doesnt seem like the secondary was opening, it now is. a bit more power, now lets see if it helps the mpg's. DSC_0006 by phillipcdube, on Flickr DSC_0008 by phillipcdube, on Flickr DSC_0007 by phillipcdube, on Flickr started poking at the rust and rot. nothing major on the rockers, just a couple quarter size holes that can be easily patched. the PO must have jacked it off the pinch weld and flattened it. no rust starting though. the rear quarters were a different story. super crusty and rotted with a piece of sheet metal riveted over to pass inspection. boxed it in. had to do this to both sides, did it fast, wasnt looking for perfection. this is gonna eventually be a trail beater painted completely with rubberized bedliner. they ended up like this... DSC_0009 by phillipcdube, on Flickr still need to spray bomb this one. DSC_0010 by phillipcdube, on Flickr the floors are solid, everything else is pretty good. another hole in the rear wheel well i patched up easily. i'm surprised considering the age, up here in NH most cars that arnt galvanized dont last more then 10-15 years without rotting out. this isnt bad for an 86.
  21. from what i saw, the rockers looked repairable. only a couple small holes. but on the other hand, i didnt poke at it too much to see how bad it really was.
  22. i've been looking around for the perfect representation of my high school sweetheart, a loyale wagon. my first car was a 91, push button 4 wheel drive. knowing what i know about cars now, that car shouldnt have lasted more then months with the stuff i did to it. when i moved on, it had 250k and my stepfather gave it to the kid down the street that drove it for a couple years after that. since then i've gotten deep into vw/audi, but i've always broken my neck checking out loyale's on the side of the road. so i bought one. i picked up an 86 with high/low 4wd. finding any of these in the northeast is super tough, mother nature and the DOT winter salt take a toll on the body's and everything rots. i had my heart set on the dual 4wd setup, so i searched for a while. i found this one up in maine, 200k and a relatively body. i'll have some welding to do on the rockers, but thats about it. its got a bunch of clear coat peel, but thats not a worry to me. on a previous vw i had i bedlined the entire car, and thats my plan with this one. i used the generic black bedliner on that project, this one i plan on using the color matched stuff you can get online. as for engine stuff, a swap is definitely in order. i've done bit of research, and i've decided on doing the ej22 swap. i've read i'll need an adapter for the tranny, which i'll probably need help to find. my plans also are to keep it carbed. so i'll be looking for an early ej22 with the slotted cams, a ford escort distributor, anything else? distant plans are gonna be for a supercharger. i have an eaton m90 in the garage that i'd love to mount on the intake with the a jetted weber carb on the other side. other plans are gonna be for the 6 lug conversion, lift, brush gaurd, ect. its gonna be fun. so to start it off i've got a pic from where i discovered it. the dude is paid, i'll be up to grab it with a trailer in the next week or two. till then i'll just stare at this pic and dream about driving through potato fields and atv trails like i did with my first loyale.
