  1. Yep, should just be able to swap the wire, swap the alternator, and add another 10awg wire to carry the difference in load from the 90A Alt. (if you're going to install lights, sound, etc). Im just looking for a pulley and I'll be doing the swap as well.
  2. They are serviceable but I just replace them alltogether.. I havnt had to change one in 7 years... maybe check out the book How To Keep Your Subaru Alive if you havnt already. good descriptions of what youd be getting yourself into as well as all the tools necessary
  3. I wasn't aware there were different types of CC .. I have an 85 ea81 brat man trans..typical button below the steering wheel, vac operated thing.. I just need to know how the little key chain bracket sets up w/the pedal assembly
  4. Ok, so ill tackle them 1by1 -Yes, I believe you're correct about vacuum controlling the CC (cruise control), however I had moved the pedal quite a few times before the swap to gain familiarity, and I had experienced some resistance from the chain/bracket setup while actuating the pedal. That's actually what brought it to my attention.. Then I noticed said bracket dangling behind the center dash console piece.. -My car was 100% original, I did the weber swap, so that's not the issue. The issue is me not bring able to correctly connect that damn bracket Basically, I never use CC, but I at least want to know that I hooked it up correctly at the pedal end before I muck around with it. And I knew the one time I don't photograph the area I take apart, it would bite me in the rump roast.. Classic
  5. Definitely sounds like a CV Joint issue, as you suspect. It's really not all that hard to replace, even with limited mechanical knowledge. What I did is do one side at a time, lay everything out in the order you took it off and then use the side thats still in tact if you run into trouble putting things back together.. so yes, it may take a few hours, but once you do one side the other should be easy... and yeah, what ^ says about the roll pins lol.. twas a pain when i first did it, but nothing a mallet and grease couldnt solve
  6. Hey all, As I went to change the throttle cable on my 85 brat I realized there was a part I forgot to reconnect. It's a brass looking bracket w/ what looks like a key chain type chain attached running up under the dash. It's my guess that this is for the cruise control setup. I tried figuring out how it connects to the pedal bracket but I'm having trouble getting it to function properly. I can't get it to "pull" on the chain no matter the configuration.... Anyone with pics of their pedal or A diagram?? Definitely feel like an idiot on this one as I'm sure it's super obvious.. Thanks SB
  7. Kinda seems like someone was looking for an argument...
  8. Awesome post! Thanks for the detailed photos. I'll be doing this in the near future as well.
  9. So the new pin didnt change the floppy pedal? hmm.. I swear my pedal had more travel and less free play in the past than it has now, but like you, clutch function is normal.. guess I'll have to play around with mine and see what i can come up with. maybe I'll find someone nearby with an ea81 car to let me compare..
  10. Once again, I experience everything you describe above as well. I have an 85 Brat, so not much difference in models. I think the reverse thing is normal (at least it is for me, I've had it for 9 years and two clutches and its always been that"timing" thing you described about putting it into reverse. The cold shift thing is normal too (could try different gear oil as described above). Post up what you find out about the pedal, im interested in what you dig up...
  11. Caught the girl who hit my BRZ and left! The timing was amazingly lucky Also, hoping to install a CB & 90A alt in the brat this weekend
  12. Interesting... I've noticed something similar to what your describing as well. I hadn't driven it in a while but when I got back to it it seems like the pedal has a lot of free play but the clutch engages smoothly so I'm wary to mess with it. Good luck and post what you find.
  13. Just re-read the post. they're buried around page 9 or so, but yes, you CAN do the swap on ea81's w/ AC, and from what I gathered, you can use the stock pulley on the oem alt, only needing to file down the spacer a little more than with the double pulley.
  14. Would the Maxima alternator swap fit on an EA81 w/ AC? From what i've gathered, theyre basically the same size as OEM subaru Alts, correct?
  15. Luckily I haven't had a problem with my gaskets or bulbs blowing. But it can't be that hard to make a waterproof seal for em, can it? I figure in any case one could use some sort of sealant and "glue" em in place..
  16. Figured I'd do a definitive update. Issue was a combination of a faulty accelerator pump in the hitachi & a variety of small vacuum leaks. Weber carb swap fixed the issue. Thanks for all those who helped. Looking like my milage will be great as well, went through abt quarter tank in 75 miles. Pretty standard IIRC. Cheers to a solution!
  17. Just ordered some lenses too... we'll see i guess... but for $27, why not give it a shot. theres a guy selling lenses for $75/ea on CL here.
  18. Check the back of the ignition switch with a multimeter. Easy to get to and pops out with two screws. I had a connection fail there once on my brat and it did similar things. If not that, then just track down the source of the break/short with the multimeter stating at the battery.

  20. Anyone know of a spot that I could get a lift kit installed on an 85 Brat in the Greater Seattle area? I know SJR is the preferred place to get the kit, but I dont have the space to do the installation (damn landlords)... Any advice? Thanks
  21. Found a factory skid plate for my 85 BRAT, but need to know what size bolts it takes... does anyone out there have one on their Brat that they wouldnt mind sizing for me? Thanks all!
