  1. It has 25k hard miles on and was the Subaru blue CVT fluid. Did not smell burnt. And yes, 8k for a replacement. I called two different stealerships; both within $100 of 8k.
  2. If Subaru won't replace it for free, how hard is this to replace? The quick fix looks.like it's maybe 20. Minutes, but how hard is the actual sensor to get out and put in?
  3. While sitting at a stoplight the other day, I noticed the car felt like it was slightly rocking forward and backward while in drive with the brakes on. It was almost as if the torque converter was trying to engage and move the car forward. It was very subtle, but still noticeable. It cycles about every second. There was no wind, but felt similar to wind blowing in a car. RPMs were stable at idle. AC is off. Another sign of failure? The car has never done it before.
  4. Hello Everyone, The 2014 Forestyer 2.5 Preimum is under the microscope again....This time, the key periodically will not turn from ACC to Off, it locks at ACC (everything that that should be on stays on). Google research leads me towards the car doesn't recognize it is in park. Every time the key gets stuck, the gear indicator in the dash between speedometer and tachometer and always shows P. and the car is indeed in park (it rolls back onto the parking dent if e brake is not engaged. I have tried shifting gears and back to park and it doesn't help. I have tried starting the car and turning it off again. No one thing works consistently, but eventually the key does turn to off and comes out. Any ideas on where to look from here? This is the same car with the CVT that managed to redline and bounce off the rev limiter while in Drive
  5. Great information, thank you! Are these things pretty easy to work on? Generally speaking of course. I work on our Subarus a lot. The most complicated I get as far as repairs goes is head gaskets and timing. I try to stay away from gears, transmissions, and internal engine components.
  6. What are your thoughts on the standard AWD vs the TV-awd, is it with the extra money? Are all of those clutches in it for the long haul with a lead for behind the wheel? Especially if it were to see a fair amount of slippery conditions(snow, mud, gravel, sand, etc).
  7. Yeah, the bigger question is will the Forester transmission last after it's issue a couple weeks ago. It's really the only reason we started considering selling it at this point. It's still worth something now, once the transmission stops working it's a brick or 8k bill
  8. Really starting to reconsider a RAV4. I think it's the only Toyota we would buy (the 4runner is too big and expensive...and we already have an Xterra). Lots of things to consider. I don't think we would ever buy something brand new, even in this crazy market. I think under 20k miles would be ideal
  9. A while ago, we test drove a RAV4 for my mother-in-law. We all actually liked the car, except for the fact that it sounded really echoey when talking and driving. It was the base trim package though. Does that improve with the higher trim packages, or do you just get more bells and whistles? The added power and space was nice. This whole thread was started because of a transmission issue...the car only has 130k on it and has been through every major issue known to these Foresters and Subaru refused to help with anything. We lost a lot of respect for SOA with this car.
  10. That's kinda what I thought. Those giant integrated screens are usually difficult to replace. I wasn't impressed with the Harmon Kardon system in the 2022 ascent or 2020 outback we had on loaner. I had a friend want to replace the unit in a 2015 Lexus IS. There are a couple options if you want Android Auto/Apple Carplay but no real replacement options
  11. There are tons of reasons to not buy a new car. I do despise them in a lot of ways. The main reason to buy a newer vehicle is that we drive...A LOT. We do 25-30,000 miles a year. A lot of which are in bad weather, in the mountains, and at night. If I could find a 2005 Subaru that didn't have 200k+ on it, I'd rather buy that. Good luck, especially in Colorado. As far as values go, a new or lightly used Subaru is a better deal than a used one in Colorado. I have a 2002 Impreza TS 5MT with 140k on it and body damage. I paid 6k for it 10 years ago. I could easily get 10k for it in my area now. A new Forester starts at 23k. Granted it comes with headaches, unwanted tech, and a decreased ability to work on it. The problem definitely stems from poor driving ability and insurance issues. Sadly, you can't fix stupid...it is a plague. I personally find it more distracting fighting the technology than just driving... I have replaced several sets.if head gaskets as well. The EJ years are amazingly easy to work on. We have been a Subaru family for over 30 years (including our parents vehicles). We.love the cars and love what Subaru stands for. We use and abuse our Subarus, and usually they do fine. We have tried looking at other brands and just cannot stray away, they just don't offer the capability a Subaru does. The goal of this post was to get people's opinions and experiences of newer Subaru models and what they are like to live with. Everyone on here knows the older Subarus are far more reliable, there's no debate there. Does anyone know if the infotainment systems can be replaced with aftermarket stuff?
  12. We had a loaner for a while and I cannot stand the automatic braking and beeping. Drove me insane. We liked the ascent otherwise. I really wish you could still get a Forester XT.
  13. That's been our general experience as well....until our 14 Forester. It has been a nightmare and Subaru has had us bent over a barrel on every major repair. I absolutely detest the Eyesight and power lift gates so it makes it hard to buy a new vehicle but that's the way of the world.
  14. We were actually just in a newer CRV (my mother in law bought a 2022 Crosstrek sport a few months ago. We tried out the CRC and didn't like it. So much of it is personal preference though.
  15. Hello Everyone, If you were to buy a new Subaru, what would you buy? I know the oil consumption issue has been resolved to an acceptable point. Are the CVTs any better, or are all Subarus cursed now? How's the 2.4T. motor? Looking at 2020+
  16. When this code popped up on my 2002 Impreza it was head gaskets. I had some.other driveability issues indicating the failure though
  17. Is there a way to further diagnose it? Or is this guaranteed failure? When I did the last fluid change, it was dark but relatively clean (no debris or metallic shimmer).
  18. It doesn't have the manual option, only a low. It was not in low. I was on flat ground doing a out 80mph. I assume something malfunctioned I'm just not sure what and if it can be remedied or if imanent failure is in the future.
  19. I guess that's not a bad place to start. I'll have to get it warmed up and pull the fill plug out and see where it is at.
  20. Hello Everyone, I was passing someone the other day and when I floored it, the RPMS went up as usual, then kept going until the rev limiter was engaged. The engine bounced off the limiter until I let off the gas which took a couple seconds to figure out what was happening...the car is an automatic after all. 2014 Forester 2.5 Premium. 130k on the car as of this morning. The car never did it again over the next 1500 miles. Car runs great otherwise. Recent work: differential oil changes (Amsoil) CVT oil change (Amsoil). I followed the factory procedure and put in approximately 5.5 qts. New short block 12k ago.
  21. The PZEV is essentially a catalytic converter with twice the contact surface area. This does make them more likely to get stolen, but I think Subarus sit a little low for this to be a common occurrence My wife's forester does get fantastic fuel economy for a Subaru. It's one of the things we do love about the car. We average upper 20's around town. On the highway, we actually get worse, but we are usually doing 80mph+ through the mountains with camping, photography, and rock hounding gear. If we don't hammer on it, it gets 30mpg+ We have never had a problem with emissions or anything related to it. If your daughter found a new generation Subaru with the FB25A engine in it that didn't have all of the bells and whistles and didn't have oil consumption, it would probably be a pretty good car. The base model doesn't come with the CVT (we have grown quite fond of it, but we were hesitant at first). If she could spring for a car with the FB25D even better. Introduction of the FB25D varied based on model, but as a general rule most models after 2018 started receiving it. A NA EJ251/2 is still going to be your absolute best bet for a "modern" Subaru though; they are just getting hard to find with low mileage and in decent shape.
  22. My wife's car has heated cloth. The driver side went out on the bottom. It's not serviceable and requires the entire bottom be replaced to the tube of $700 for parts. I've seen it be a problem occasionally, but I wouldn't say it's a huge issue
