  1. I just installed a weber DFEV on my EA82. I have tried permatex high tack gasket sealant and type 2b gasket sealant and the coolant still leaks under the gasket, both into the intake and on top of the engine. I was thinking of sanding(roughing both surfaces) and epoxying a small piece of aluminum sheet over the hole before putting on the gasket and the adapter. Anyone else had this problem? Any ideas or solutions?
  2. I had a few of those coils burned out on my 85 gl. They actually are wired in series with taps in between. For low speed all three are used, next speed bypasses one and only uses 2 of the resistors etc. until high speed where they are all bypassed. I have a lot of coiled nichrome wire and cut some small pieces that I soldered in place. It's almost impossible to solder the wire because the nichrome repels instead of wetting the solder. I might try to plate the wire with copper if I get time. Then I could cut little coils and plate the ends and make them available.
  3. I just purchased a new set of tires for my 85 wagon. The old ones wore out in about 15 k miles. The rear tires wore all the way through the steel belts on the inside while having enough tread on the outside to meet inspection easily. The guy at the tire shop showed me the alignment on the car. It's toed out .7 degrees on each rear wheel for a total of 1.4 degrees of toe. The adjustment only allowed for .08 degrees of correction. He said he sees this on gl wagons a lot. Since this is supposed to be a common problem I thought someone on the board might have a solution. He suggested slotting the 3 holes on the outer arm or getting a cammed outer arm bushing. Any ideas? Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.
  4. I have a 85 gl wagon with a hill holder problem. I adjust the hill holder so it functions properly -- but if I push the brakes extra hard (eg. on a steep slope) it locks up and will not let go! I have to set the parkinng brake and pop the hood and release the hill holder manually. It functions fine as long as I don't push the brakes extra hard. When it locks though, the brakes are locked at their extra hard setting and I burn the clutch up if I am at a busy intersection trying to get through. I have tried different adjustments on the hill holder and still have this problem. I have been driving it with the hill holder adjustment backed off all the way but I'd really like to use it. Has anyone else experienced this??? Any suggestions??? Looking at it a bit closer I can see that the harder the brake is pushed the farther the lever on the hill holder is turned. The clutch still releases it but evidently the lever is sticky and doesn't turn freely enough. Can this be lubed?? With what?? Can it be rebuilt or does it need replacing? I could make a modified return spring support to stretch the spring tighter but I'd rather fix the tightness in the lever cause it could just get worse and kill a tighter spring fix.
  5. Methanol is used as one of the components for oxygenated fuel. It's used in Utah for the winter months by EPA regulations. The gas stations use up to 15% MTBE or methanol. It doesn't hurt any of the components on your car or they couldn't use it. It does however clean the crud out of the fuel system so the first time you use it there's a chance you might clog up your fuel filter a bit.
  6. I doubt octane rating will affect your emissions much but I don't know for sure. What definitely will help is to get some methanol and mix it in with your gas. I've mixed it 3 parts gas to 1 part methanol and being an oxygenated fuel it lowers your emissions.
