  1. nope put her in dry, and make sure you clean all the sealing surfaces well to get rid of any oil and other residues.
  2. wait... those were for the stock turbo. what do you have on there right now?
  3. got one from the junker for a decent price and all's well. She's running great, although the new turbo has some minor cracking arouund the wastegate and I notice it doesn't boost quite as well. Your header gaskets are normal OEM exhaust manifold gaskets for the TWE pipes aren't they? I just called Saunders, and the prices are as follows: $7.85 each for exhaust manifold $8.85 for u/p turbo inlet $10.95 for d/p turbo outlet Quite the difference I'd say.
  4. I think I paid around $15 each for the turbo gaskets (u/p and d/p), and $8 or $10 each for the turbo exhaust manifold gaskets from the dealer here in Vic. Lemme know if you want me to pick some up for you and send them on the bus.
  5. That's a great deal caboobaroo. I'm tryin to find something a little closer to home (need it soon) but if that fails I'll definitely get in touch, cheers
  6. Been there - done that. Somethings definitely funky in the turbo.
  7. I think you guys are leaving a lot of variables out - like is it carbed or FI'd, 2wd vs 4wd, wagon vs sedan. A SPFI 2wd sedan will almost always get much better mileage than a carbed 4wd wagon because of weight, xtra drivetrain spinning (even when not engaged) and fuel management. Of course there is always exceptions, but these factors will make a big difference. Ditto on the NGK plugs!!!
  8. could be any of the suggested... MAF or vacuum leak (not mutually exclusive either) would be my guess. Try pulling codes and see what you get.
  9. right on bushbasher - it's definitely not oil. Turbo's off again, and I can't see anything obvious, but I'm assuming there must be a small crack in the body somewhere that is letting coolant escape. There is a slight bit of play in the shaft especially on the compressor side, but nothing that would make the turbine bite into the housing. You sure you don't wanna flog that turbo you just picked up bushbasher:brow: hehe I'm gunna call the guys out in Sooke tomorrow and see what they want for one. Thanx for the input gents....
  10. the smoke is coming from under the hood - from the turbo itself. what gets me is it is only when driving/boosting. After I start it up and idle for a while (even revving it a bunch) no probs. Only after driving it and getting on the turbo does it start to smoke - and it really smokes. Off to go pull it out again...
  11. new post for a new turbo problem... well I found an external pinhole coolant leak on the supply hose on my VF-2. Thought I had the problem licked, because when it idles all is well, but as soon as I drive it and get it boosting, the turbo starts to smoke like mad. Is this probably an internal seal? I'm thinkin (cause I really don't know the intricacies of the turbo guts) that perhaps there is some seal around the turbine shaft that could be toast and is causing some leaking when boosting. The smoke smells like coolant, and not oil. HELP:-\
  12. I'm glad you're getting so much enjoyment outta this Martin:banghead:
  13. Anyone ever taken the coolant lines off of a stock EA82Turbo? I thought it was pretty crucial to have the cooling because these things get pretty damn hot. What can I expect if I do this? And in answer to your question naru, it is an '85, and that part # is right (I think).
  14. Cool trev. Think I'll have a go and see what happens. Nice to know there's a backup in case I screw up:lol:
  15. my EA82T has a VF2 turbocharger. Yesterday I started to get a huge amount of coolant pouring out from the bottom of the turbo. No prob I thought - prolly the coolant hose that passes right next to the head - easy enough. No such luck:banghead: It looks like the coolant was coming right out of the bottom of the turbo body cause the hose is fine, and there is nowhere else around there it could be coming from. Anyone ever taken apart their turbo? Is there a water seal that could have blown in there and isn't too hard to replace? I have the turbo off already, but I'm a little sketched about taking it all apart cause I know the turbines are precision balanced and I don't wanna mess anything up. Oh what to do, what to do....
  16. I had a really bad oil leak on the passenger side of my EA82T a while back and it was the oil passage o-ring in the cam tower. I could actually see the oil dripping out while it was running - right on to the exhaust crossover pipe. If yours is that bad too, you should be able to tell - run it up on some ramps, climb under and with it running look really closely. I'm not saying that it isn't your HG, but I'd make good and sure before you go and change it out. It should be obvious when you pull the cam tower if the oil passage o-ring is shot, or not seated properly.
  17. all good ideas. we'll see who's right this weekend when I tear into it:drunk:
  18. I've done it a couple of times on the passenger side with the motor in the car. Didn't have any real trouble at all. The toughest part is getting the cam tower back on without getting gasket goo all over the place. Have done the cam towers on the drivers side too (with motor in) and that is not really fun, but still possible. Once the cam towers are off, the head is easy, so it is possible if you don't have the gear to pull the motor. I'll ask it too... are you sure it's not the cam tower o-ring? That is by far the most likely spot if it is just an oil leak and not coolant loss/use. Just have to check:grin:
  19. I replaced it once on my EA82T without removing the manifold. I got a clamp that could be tightened from the front (not the top) - like a hose clamp, so that it could be clamped down by putting the screwdriver in from the front and torquing it down. Get a long piece of hose so that you have something to push it on with and then trim it to length after you have got it secured under the manifold. It wasn't fun, but it held up for me. I had my manifold off a few weeks ago and was going to redo it, but it was on there fine so I left it.
  20. I can't seem to track down the source of a coolant leak that has developed lately. Every time when I first start the car, warm or cold, I smell coolant for the first little while I am driving - especially with the window open. I've put on new intake manifold gaskets, the bolts are snugged right, I can't see any leaks anywhere under the hood, and I'm not getting any dampness inside (heater core). I've only lost about 1/2 litre of coolant (at most) in since this started weeks ago so It's not really causing me any probs, but its bugging the hell outta me. Any ideas where else to look??? This is on my 86 carbed EA82. thanx
  21. I'm running without a dowel pin on my EA82T with no problems. If you really want one, it should be easy enough to fab one up out of a piece of small steel rod or something like that.
  22. I'm gunna giver a good look over this weekend (especially all vac lines). Thanks for the offer Vanislru, but I think I'll just go out and buy a vac guage - definitely a good tool to have anyway. I'll let ya know how it goes...
  23. Popped her out with the drill and screw trick. Worked like a charm:banana: Thanks for the tip gents:drunk: Now she runs great and doesn't throw oil all over the inside of the hood (it really was that bad from the main seal). Only prob left is the idle - she idles fine high when I first start it, then once it starts to get warm (after 30 secs or so - not fully warm) the idle starts to bounce slowly up and down between about 800 - 1600 rpm. Also when I start it warm, the idle is way low. I'm thinkin IAC. How do I test it properly without getting a new one? cheers
  24. JB Weld is your friend:brow: Just make sure you clean up the surface really well with a degreaser first.
