  1. Add another islander to the list:grin: Grubaru, I had noisy lifters for a while too - and I mean ball bearings in the cam carrier loud. Tried it all and the final fix was a new oil pump (junkyard special) and reseal. I also use MMO in my oil (available at canadian tire). I've got an extra oil pump lying around if you need one, but try the additives first. As for the vibrations, I've heard that the early 90's loyales do this. Don't have one myself, so I don't know - just what I've heard. Doubt it has anything to do with timing, but I have a timing light if you wanna check it out. Can't hurt to set it right anyway. If you wanna do your belts, I can lend a hand if you need - I've done it 3 times now so I'm getting pretty speedy. Welcome to the board:headbang:
  2. I did it on an old honda of mine years ago. I used a c-clamp to push it back in and just worked it in & out. Rebuild should be a good idea and easy - I can get a kit from a buddy early this week and ship it up if ya need. Too bad i didn't find any goodies at the jy today:mad:
  3. The latest... Coolant is definitely leaking into my exhaust on the passenger side. Compression on both cylinders on that side is fine (140 psi). I just replaced this head gasket about 2 months ago, although I did use a jobber gasket (felpro). I'm still leaning toward the gasket leaking around one of the water jackets into the exhaust port because the compression is good, but when I pull off the exhaust pipe right after a cold start I can actually see coolant in the pipe and exhaust port. Is this possible? I'd like to have a little more input and ideas before I pull off the head with a 2-month old gasket:banghead: . cheers
  4. sorry moshe - i was just venting you do ask a lot of questions though:-p
  5. too many questions:banghead: there's your answer already
  6. Not sure exactly what is going on with my car right now. I'm losing coolant - it drips down onto my exhaust on my passenger side head, and it steams more than it should when cold. Once it's warm, there is no steam from the tailpipe. I checked the compression yesterday and got 140 on both passenger side cylinders (where the problem is) but 180 on drivers front and 130 on drivers rear (I can't remember the numbering). I'm guessing my exhaust valve is burnt on the drivers front, but that should have nothing to do with the coolant problem. I'm thinking maybe it is the head gasket around one of the water jackets that is leaking out of the head and not into the cylinder because it actually leaks down the outside of my header, as well as inside judging by the steam. Any bright ideas much appreciated?
  7. You might want to check for a decimal point in there... Your's will probably be a little different than mine since I have an '86 EA82, but my gap is 0.040 inches which is 1.02 mm. I think you might mean 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 or 1.4mm. Beyond that I'm, not sure exactly what gap you are supposed to have.
  8. The pinging sounds like predetonation to me. Spin the disty and retard your timing a bit should help. Otherwise you could just always drive downhill:lol:
  9. I'm guessing it's the hg, but i thought i'd see if there was any quick and easy way to judge if it was the head before ripping it open. Is that true guys - only turbo's crack the heads for the most part? Thanx for the input Northwet:drunk:
  10. is there any way to tell if the head gasket is blown versus a cracked head before pulling the head off?
  11. Yup.... you've all heard it before, but i'm so happy i have to share:banana: I tried them all - MMO, ATF flush, engine flush, resealed the oil pump, i even replaced one of the lifters cause i was doing the head gasket and it was questionable. Sometimes it worked for 10 mins, sometimes for 3 days, and sometime it did JACK S*#T.... and then i found the BEST junkyard ever. I got 2 oil pumps (more is always better), a muffler, some t-belt covers (not that i run with them anyway), many odds and ends, a strut tower cross-brace (or whatever its called), and a headlight case all for $30 - and that's canadian eh!!! Threw on the oil pump and drove it hard for 10 mins - oil pressure up and lifter noise gone bye-bye. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY. Needless to say I'll be going back for more since he has 3 soobs ripe for the pickin.
  12. I've got a great home for your unused oil pump:brow: . c'mon send it on down. seriously... it would get put to good use, my HLA's would luv ya
  13. My 86 EA82 carbed d/r wagon (230k) has got a bit o' shakin going on... I know i could use a wheel alignment and the tires balanced cause when I'm cruisin on the highway at around 100km, it pulls slightly to the right and shakes a bit but not too bad. The CV's seem fine - no grinding or shakin when turning, but when I'm climbing up a hill and I'm on the gas (cause we all know you need to be all over the gas when going uphill with these babies) often it will start to shake really bad. The whole car shakes, the steering wheel shakes and it will keep getting worse as i keep climbing. If i let off the gas for a sec and then floor it again, the shake goes away and she cruises normally. Ideas much appreciated...
  14. OK, lookin for some help from that vast wealth of knowledge out there... Really. I'm serious - this board ROCKS:grin: So my '86 EA82 non-turbo d/r wagon was going through coolant a bit. I thought I'd try my luck and see how long it would keep going like this... meahwhile, whenever i was driving with the window open (and only when the window was open) i got this badass smell coming in the cab. Sort of a mix of exhaust/coolant/whateverelse. This did not happen when the windows were closed during driving. Last week, guess what.....................blew the frikin head gasket. Oh well, maybe when i put a new one on it will fix the smell problem... put on the new gasket (pasenger side only, cause i'm too lazy to do both) start up the car and she is still pushing a bit o' steam for quite a while grrrrr. Oh well, lets see what happens... take her out and drive like hell and the steam stops - no more coolant level drop, but the smell problem is still there and still only when the window(s) are open. I do have a bit of an exhaust leak up front but pretty minor and I wouldn't think it would be the cause. Any thoughts? Much appreciated. cheers
  15. Vanilsru... it's burgundy, but i dont know about the lifters cause it doesnt run without the timing belts. the guy who sold it is doing so for his stepson who is gone to Oz. We'll see today when i put the new belts in but she's only got 125,000 km so im hoping all else is well or at least minor. i've been spendign WAY too much time under the hood of my 86 lately so i wanna make it the parts car. Hopefully i'll be passing thru the valley lots this winter on my way to mt washington!!! Cheers; Jon
  16. duh.... just found another thread with my answer:drunk:
  17. I just bought an 85 wagon with the EA82T and a busted timing belt (pretty stoked - she's in great shape and I got her for a song!!). I've already got an 86 wagon with a carbed EA82 (non-turbo) and an extra set of timing belts. Anyone know if they are the same belts and I can just throw mine on there? cheers Jon btw: first time post - i love this board - its got so much great info!!!
