  1. So an impreza 1.8 fwd 5 speed axle is the right length, has a 23 inner spline count and the same outer as an xt6 hub? I thought all turbos had 25 splines? So the turbo auto axle was 23?
  2. Bumpity. Another question. Do manual tranny stubby axles just come out like the auto splines? Having trouble getting one out.
  3. What do I need to do to get an axle xt6 hub to go to a 23 spine 2wd tranny. Can I just remove the stubby splines and replace them with eithe a 2wd auto XT6 stubby or one from a turbo tranny? If not what do I need to make a axle that'll do what I need it to? Thanks!

  5. They both got made it home just fine. Keep in mind that was more miles than I put on my SVX the previous 2 years plus they made a total of 10 drives through the dragon with experienced drivers giving them all they could. Who would've thought that 2 power steerings would go in the same weekend?
  6. Did you really think I was listening to Jeff? I mean he doesn't even know what kind of car to take to a XT meet for crying out loud! Why can't I just yank the stubby splines and put the splines from my auto in there (or if they won't fit one's from a turbo tranny). What input shaft are you talking about? Its been years since I've looked at a manual tranny/engine combo and don't have a clue where the shaft is at. Is it engine or tranny side? If tranny side that would mean I would need a 2wd n/a clutch wouldn't it?
  7. The torque is fairly equal between the turbo 4 and 6 which is what really matters with clutches if I understand 'em correctly. Anybody can fry a clutch. They just need to forget how to drive or drive like a 16 year old racer-wanna-be. The clutches are slightly different BUT to my recollection I thought the flywheel was the same. The car gets maybe 8k at most a year as I have plenty of other choices in the driveway and like I said, I don't drive like an idiot so I'd suspect my clutch provided it has enough friction surface to run properly under normal driving conditions would probably outlast most of the older subies on the board. Again back to the original questions as I didn't ask for the best bet but rather: 1. Will a 2wd XT clutch be strong enough? 2. Will a 2wd XT turbo clutch/4wd clutch be strong enough AND fit on the 2wd XT tranny flywheel? 3. Will the axle splines be the same?
  8. Yeah, it'll be staying 2wd which is the same tranny as the 2wd Turbo with virtually the same torque used as well if I'm not mistaken.
  9. I didn't ask for best bet. I know what the best bet is but don't have an XT6 flywheel, don't want to buy an XT6 clutch as it is 4x the price. I'm cheap and have more pressing expenses but if I can make her work for under $200 with a clutch I'll do it! Its my understand although I never actually saw two side by side that the flywheel is the same regardless of 4wd, 2wd, turbo or not turbo. Its my daily driver and my abused tranny has 205k on it. I'm not a 16 year-old racer-wanna-be like Jeff:grin: rather a 31 year old racer who trailers his toy to the track. I'm not worried too much with the 5k drops but just not slipping when you get on it ever now and again when pulling out in front of an 18 wheeler. Yeah, the tranny is the same regardless of engines or turbos throughout the 82 era so I'm not worried a bit about the tranny taking it.
  10. Found a 130k tranny, gauge cluster and all the other bits today and am looking to answer some questions. 1. Will a 2wd XT clutch be strong enough? 2. Will a 2wd XT turbo clutch/4wd clutch be strong enough AND fit on the 2wd XT tranny? 3. Will the axle splines be the same? Any ideas out there? Also are Danco clutches any good? Looking for cheap but durability is also key as I don't want to replace it anytime soon.

  13. I can overcool my SVX and no I don't live in alaska. In fact I'm south compared to you. Going through the radiator helps to warm it quicker but I can still drive for 20-30 minutes without lockup in the winter.
  14. I wouldn't waste my money on a cooler just yet. Instead I'd get a gauge as you're stating you wanna use it in winter to haul snowmobiles. If with a gauge you're running above 160 or so on the highway and spiking in the low 200s on hills and in traffic then a cooler would be wise. Otherwise you'll run the risk of not having warm enough fluid which is just as bad as having too hot of fluid.
  15. I said independently verified. You can post whatever you want on your own site but until a lab with no ties to your company verifies those results how accurate is that? You're thinking on the pan would be wrong for whatever reason. Mine was tested with a sender near the radiator and with one in the pan. Sender is plenty far away from the return line in the pan as you'd probably be right if it was near to it. Guess which one was between 10-25 higher? Ah but remember what also happens at that flash point! The higher the better as at that point the molecular structure breaks down.
  16. If you are you fried your tranny long ago. The flash point (when fluid breaks down immediately) for Mobil sythetic (which is the highest independenty verified temp ATF out there as Redline and Purple won't let 'em test theirs) is 212 degrees. On my SVX with spirited driving and sitting in traffic at 100 degrees outside (with a 19000gvw cooler) I've never exceeded 210 on the digital gauge and a pan sender.
  17. I have the Norsdouq from Summit. The best place to put it is in the pan. Anywhere else you're not getting as accurate of results
  18. Don't put one on until you put a gauge in and see where its running at! Proper temp is 140-170 in most driving conditions but 190ish is fine when its 100 outside. Lower than 130 isn't real good on the tranny just as 200 isn't. Bigger isn't necessarily better, esp. when winter comes. Don't block off the radiatory cooler either as it also acts as a fluid warmer from a cold start.
  19. Fit and finish sucks. Orange peel, poor body panel lines etc. Check the tranny fluid if an auto and if burnt walk away. Find out if the 30k service was done (not the cheapest usually about 300 or so). Make sure the tires are the same brand and tread pattern. Brake rotors tend to warp as well. Piston slap at start up when cold but its probably too warm for that. Fairly normal though!
  20. We'll I put 300 miles on my SVX with a bad C and now she's got another 45k on the odo since so that always isn't the case.
  21. check out www.car-part.com Then go to a pull a part. I know you have a big one somewhere in Florida that Grass Roots Motorsports talked about a few issues back with their impreza rally car. Any 4wd legacy or Impreza will work but you need to make sure it is a 4.11 tranny or change the rear dif too.

Funny, having worked at the worlds largest auto auction that saw maybe 20k higher mileage late model Toys come in a year would probably make me someone who knows a thing or two about how cars age. I have a friend who has a Chrysler Minivan with 300k on the engine and tranny, burns no more than .5 quarts of oil in 3k so what's your point. Are you now an expert? Oh and I put 30k a year on my 88 XT6 with over 200k on it so right there is one who has attempted it. In fact I drive that car more than the other 5 which all have at least 60k less on the odo. Like I said, good luck but FROM MY EXPERIENCES there's a reason why Toyotas aren't the Toys trucks from the 80s and early 90s. Some of it is for the better but a lot of it isn't.
  23. Sure the RAV4 is a nice car for the price but it is also, like most other cheaper toys (aside from the 80s trucks) designed to be a POS by 150k. Sure it'll still be running but they just start to break clips, interior bits fall off etc. Best of luck but don't be suprised when the interior shows its age. Most Subie seats are just wearing into comfort levels by then. Ever replace a timing chain? You can replace 2 belts in the time and effort it takes to replace one chain and 200k on a chain is stretching it to say the least.
