Looking at purchasing 1997 Legacy GT
benebob replied to D-Cal's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt does sound a little high but from my understanding Subarus (at least SVXs go for a premium in Canada). Is it at a dealer. If so it'll be a grand or so more. My wife loves her gt. I would make sure that 97s have the lsd rear (a real improvement over the standard open rear in snow)!!!

Rebuild Advice
I'm with Gary. Should be able to find a sub 100k EA-82 for a couple hundred. Reseal it, clean it up and check the heads and valves and then retire the old one. For $400 you should be good to go plus you'll be oil leak free for at least a week!

EJ22 towing capacity??
benebob replied to teppichkopf's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXyes the tranny heat is worse and if you read carefully it is that with trailer brakes. Not that it couldn't do it but legally if something would happen kiss your finacials away for life.

Cough? Anybody got an older Fuji product than me:brow: . Should have the Rabbit painted by Carlisle as well. Just need a color or colors (originally a tan and metalic crap brown). Check out the link the help with that. Would love a weird but good looking combination from this site if you're a color person (which I'm definately not). http://www.paintforcars.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=pfc&Category_Code=acrylic_enamel_paint

Which is better, Legacy or Outback?
benebob replied to cato47's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGround clearance? You boys are crazy! I've taken my SVX with summer z rated tires through 2 feet of unplowed snow in the mountains of PA with not even a flicker of trouble. Lower is much better when it comes to on road driving. Don't believe me go take an Outback out and do a moose test at 65 when wet and watch the rear end pass ya. Do the same thing in a legacy and you won't see that. Off road sure hut unless you're driveway is horrible or you want to rallyx it (which by the way I've done in an SVX grated it had more clearance than a paltry outback does) Not sure where the easier to put kids in a car seat comes from regarding the outback. That's a good one since the door opening is exactly the same since the door is exactly the same.

financing, Used vs. Rebuilt engines
benebob replied to choly51505's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDid you check out www.car-part.com You have to have an engine around there somewhere for a reasonable price.

Which is better, Legacy or Outback?
benebob replied to cato47's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell a legacy sits lower so it'll handle better, has more road style tires so it'll brake better (easy to change though), will get you slightly better gas mileage (1 mpg at best) and finally can be had cheaper because it just isn't as "cool" since it isn't painted like an SUV. I think the Limited Slip rear (very nice to have and worth any added cost if you live near snow) is available on more variations of Outbacks but just on the GT for the Legacy (which would be my choice if I was looking esp a 02 or newer since it'll have the side impact airbags).

The Official Camber Plate Thread
Yeah, I was fairly sure we'd have to redrill. We're not a streeter. Straight E Prepared

The Official Camber Plate Thread
So can I put these suckers on with standard springs? Haven't gotten this far yet with our SVX. Not even sure if Leg/Impreza mounts can be made to work easily but its about time to start adding camber so we use all our tires before they cord.

What trannies will work?
REX as far as I know the tranny's are gonna be the same fwd or awd in length give or take if you block the rear off. Did you consider going with a fwd auto tranny at all? I'm having trouble picturing the linkage you're speaking of on the 5 speed but would that give ya more room to play with. As for a porsche tranny yeah that can be made to work. You'd need an adaptor though. Do a search of the convertors out there.

86 BRAT rpm ghost
I know some BRATS in 86 had a non rebuildable one (mine was like that).
-
86 BRAT rpm ghost
Yes the tach comes from the disto area. My guess is it is just going.
-
86 BRAT rpm ghost
Sounds to me if I read your post right that the tach is jumping but the engine revs aren't. Probably a distibutor that is on its way out. Mine did that for a while, then fixed itself for a year then completely went.

Rust proofing
benebob replied to gsp4's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt electrocoats it. No idea on how good it is or not but I wouldn't rust proof any new car that's a unibody as it'll leave goop where you want and need it to drain. Since I'm guessing you're planning to keep the car forever just make sure that at least once a year you clean out the front and rear wheel wells. They tend to get gunked up with dirt/leaves and other crap then trap water which will in turn lead to rust

Lots of older subies up to gen 1 legacies and Imprezas. Not much after though but sometimes.

RallyX in Central PA
Did ya get the results off the Susq SCCA Yahoo board?
-
RallyX in Central PA
Only major issue was a seperated rear strut mount but all good otherwise. On my last run I finally figured out braking isn't good so I didn't touch the brakes at all.

RallyX in Central PA
Its rare that Susq SCCA lets you pick numbers except in pre reg. Not sure how they're planning to do it there. They like numbers on both sides and I think the numbers are supposed to be 6 inches big but they're not real picky so long as you can read 'em. Glad you got the brakes bled. What do you need mud flaps for. They only add weight. MUST REMEMBER windshield cleaner as we're lacking wipers!!!

Which tires will you pick for your Legacy 2.5GT?
benebob replied to njchen24's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXPersonally, for that kinda price I'd buy myself some used rims and get some nice snows then go with a Falken (cheap but nice quality owned by Sumitomo now) or even a Sumi for the other 3 months. I just don't trust that I'll have a set of tires long enough to last 70k w/o an issue with one of them making it necessary to replace all 4. If you must spend all your money then I'm with Jamie!

svx vs. legacy
benebob replied to offroadsubaruguy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell my mechanic has used Legacy axles in SVXs as the rebuilder he used retired and he can't find a reliable source. It fits right in there so my guess is it isn't any wider or its only a slight bit that the axles are swappable. If you want a little wider track what about some spacers between the wheel and hub? Should be able to go about a 1/2 inch on either side without getting longer lugs.
