Well, this happened yesterday on the way back from a 4wding/ hunting trip:
I was driving up a gravel road heading home, coming around a right hand blind corner.
In NZ we drive on the left, so the guy coming towards me too quickly in a 2wd hilux was on the inside. He locked up, slid sideways and took out the rhs of my Foz.
Luckily no one was hurt, he's paying for it all so no harm to me. Pity for him though, it won't be cheap to fix! And he punctured one of my D697s... Grr. -
You're right...I'd totally forgotten about that. That's that whole newb thing coming in to play...I thought I'd read about guys using Forester springs to lift their 00-04 Outbacks, but I think I might be lumping Forester springs and Baja springs together even though they're completely different vehicles and the Baja is actually related to the Outback. And I can handle oil leaks, everything I've owned so far has leaked a little bit of oil so it doesn't faze me unless it gets bad. Coolant leaks are what scare me.
I noticed you have Kings on your Forester, would you recommend them for a real lift over just swapping to taller springs from another Subaru?
Kings are nice, but not really necessary unless your suspension is shagged and it needs replacing anyway. I fitted raiseds as block and spacer lifts are illegal in NZ. If body lifts were legal I'd fit standard height front raised rear (to compensate for loaded vehicle) and then blocks to lift more. At the moment my Foz has a saggy arse when loaded as the front Kings don't compress a lot.

Lol you guys are funny, turned from this guys 10.5" lift on how to build a lift! yeah its maybe 6" lift incluting fozzy struts. The dude who owned it prior lived a couple blocks from my house. Personnly wasnt impressed.. With 31's on there he should have 13-14" at the rear diff or more lol. My buddys old EA82 wagon only 4" of lift is at 13.5" at the rear diff with 31's.
Just my thought haha
Christ, my 2003 SG Foz has 13" under the rear diff with only Kings and no spacers! Running 27" 215/65r16 Bridgestone D697 AT.
But yeah, good info on the lifts, pretty constructive way to derail a thread haha- 1

That's a good point, and one I've thought about, but since I barely have time to off-road now it's not something I'm concerning myself with at the immediate moment. Down the, line, I'd probably end up putting Forester or Baja springs on my (future) Outback, or possibly even the King lift springs if I was feeling like dropping some serious cash. I've thought about Foresters too, but they're pretty hard to come by in this neck of the woods, especially in my price range, or without obscenely high miles. I'll still go drive one! Who knows, my opinion may be changed once I drive both of them. I do like the way Foresters look.....
Just a word on suspension - the 2000-on Outback uses different rear suspension design (multilink not Mac strut) and so SF and SG Forester (1997-2008) rear suspension won't fit in...
The EJ251 isn't a bad engine, mine weeps a little oil from the left HG but still runs fine. I'd recommend a manual though. Auto would be sluggish and have poorer response.

I've never been a fan of those taillights, they came on the 89-93 Omega facelift in NZ and I personally prefer the more symmetrical look of the earlier Leone lights. Each to their own though.

Yeah my Kings were a bit jiggly at first but they've softened up over the 5000km I've done on them. Lift blocks are illegal here too which is why I went with a Forester to start with (plus NZDM dual-range). My Foz's tail sits a bit lower than I'd like when it's laden too, I think a 1" saggy butt spacer would sort it (but that's illegal, of course).

Yeah I've got a set of Kenda Nevegal mud tyres on my MTB and love them! I've got no idea what their car tyres are like but if they're anywhere near as good as their bike tyres they won't be crap, like some Chinese brands.

Did you end up getting the Kenda tyres? They're a good company, have been making serious mountain bike tyres for years. Sweet ride anyway mate

Makes the 2000 look small!

I firmly beleive thats vintage subarus should come in the same colors as Skittles!
If I get another 80's suburu it's going Bright Green!
1st gen Turbo?
It would predate my phase one harness so it should work. I need to see if I can track down that Turbo.
1st gen legacy was like 91-95?
What are the specs on that SOHC 2.2 turbo?
---------------- Update
Specs on the 1st gen turbo are good:
Phase one 2.2 Liter SOHC Turbo, 163 bhp (122 kW; 165 PS) fully closed deck, oil squirters, no intercooler.
Now the question is can I add an intercooler and what would that get me?
Aslo, what can I get from delta cams and how will this affect gas mileage?
Yes you can add an intercooler - the 1st-gen Legacy GT/RS both had water-air IC in NZ/Japan. This style would be ideal as you wouldn't have to cut a hood scoop.

Does it have the checkered interior?
Look in the last pic

It does look good, the clean front end panels are a bonus too
-
I like what you've done so far! A possible combo could be to turbo a SOHC EJ22, Subaru did an EJ22T in the 1st gen Legacy... I do like the colour too!
-
Should look good lifted! Try iridium spark plugs for longer service intervals?
-
The frameless windows are inherently slightly noisy, I just live with it...
-
Just a word of caution - the SOHC EJ22 will fit between the frame rails up front fine, but the DOHC 'EJ20T' (not actually a valid engine code) will not - you will have to notch the frame rails unless you go crazy high with the lift.
And for a tranny, you should try and get a dual-range EJ gearbox!

-
Get an imported AWD dual-range instead!
-
There was a longer wait time for the SG rears, so I just got SF ones. With the offset of my wheels the spring perch is no worry, I can fit a 40" tire if the rest of the car would let me. I plan to lift it some more and try to fit some 33's or 35's....maybe next winters project.
Might want to swap to 4.44 gears if you're running 35's!
-
Did you use SF or SG (second-generation) rear struts? The SG ones are slightly longer, better tyre-spring perch clearance and more lift...
Looks awesome either way!
-
Nice plan with the wagons.
But. ANy WRX engine will NOT fit between the chassis rails - they are unfortunately all DOHC and these make them too wide.
However, an EJ22T out of a first-gen turbo Legacy will fit, as this is a SOHC engine and is narrower.
The six-speed may or may not fit with the 2" lift. It definitely won't fit without it.
The engine crossmember will need modding to fit the Legacy engine, or you could try and find an EA81T crossmember (rare) which still may not fit.
Gearbox crossmember will be custom (obviously).
Good luck man! Clean wagons anyway, if I were you I'd restore them both and get a clean EA82 wagon to lift/turbo (DOHC EJs and six-speeds actually fit)...
-
Also, since you're getting it certed, will you be installing a lift at the same time? 2" body 3" strut top seems popular on the L, it was what I was considering with my old one.

Pics could help, but if it's that rusted out that the bolts are bad, they're likely to snap and give you no end of grief trying to remove them.
Could be easier finding a less rusty but high-miles Forester/Outback with a blown HG and just swap in your fresh EJ251, part out your current one and make some money back...

So, still ticking away at my ej swap and I'm just trying to sort out what I'm going to do as far as my radiator is concerned. All the radiators I have seen over here for the leone are plastic tanked single row things, which makes it hard to add larger ports for the ej hoses, and the two i have currently are in pretty rough shape (leaks and bent fins). The legacy radiator would take a bit more cutting then I think I'm willing to do to install. So as I see it, I could;
get a custom radiator (which means getting another custom radiator if it breaks) and spending a fair chunk of coin.
Then there's an xt6 wrecking which I could try and get the radiator from, pretty much the same size as ea, large ports, but then the same thing applies if it breaks, cheaper then a custom rad though.
Or what I'm leaning to, is the BRZ radiator, roughly the same size as the ea, large ports, easier to fit, potentially better cooling and the advantage that if anything breaks, another brz radiator will bolt in. Now, the downside to the brz (at the moment atleast) i can't source one in NZ (except for one oem with delivery k's for $500) Or an aftermarket one early march. Which lead me to ebay, and this post. Now, since I'm probably going to get it off ebay and if it doesnt work out returns going to be pretty much a waste, if anyone has done it or can recommend a radiator I would like to know more. If no one really pipes up I will probably go with the cheapest brz rad shipped and give it a go with that.
Anyway, some i have been looking at (pretty much cheapest on ebay+shipping to nz)
Cheapest
Next cheapest (has brand at least)
All aluminum
Cheers for all those that looked

EL Freddo (off AUSUBARU, but he is here too) used a Nissan Pulsar N13 factory radiator, brand new and cheap - very good fit

Looks mint and brings back memories! I've seen a few like this around back in the day, JDM imports with all the options. None lowered though!
