  1. What I'm wondering is if a stock EA82 will gain any performance from a injector swap. What would be the perfect injector upgrade, or does all this only apply to Turbo'ed cars?
  2. I'd like to know where I could get the list of manufacturers for a lot of Subaru stuff, like who makes the PCV valves, fuel filters, thermostats etc. Part numbers would also help. I got a PCV from Deutsch from Autozone, but I've heard I need to use OEM parts for most stuff. Thats why I'm curious as to who makes the stuff.
  3. I can't seem to get my car to idle properly: Some days it purrs like a cat, other days it stumbles like a drunk. Car does fine on acceleration and usually does when I've driven 10 miles it'll do fine at a light, but thats with it in "D", not "P" or "N". Generally it sounds much better in Drive than in anything else. Anyway, I have a new performance coil, a new PCV, a new fuel filter (though after letting it almost run dry a couple times in a row it might have gunk from the tank in it), new plugs, new cap, new rotor, Chevron fuel, new performance wires, THE FRIGGIN WORKS. Whats going on?
  4. Sweetness, now I remember having seen that somewhere before. Dave, how did you cut the hole for the maf in the body? And where can I buy that pipe kit?
  5. I just upgraded to a MAF adapter and 3" cone filter. Excellent top-end performance with it, but lost a bit on the low-end. I was wondering if this comes from the increased flow of warm air into the intake. My filter is cradled in the bottom end of the airbox like so: So basically I think it's getting cold air from the vent in the bottom of the box, but pulling in hot air from the top. What I could do to cool the air around the filter apart from cutting a scoop and relocating the filter to the spare tire bay?
  6. I've already done that, I'm thinking more of something along the lines of processor controlled operation of the fuel and ignition systems. I'm not talking about Fast 'n Furious style laptop-powered NOS injection, but still maybe adding some modern day tech to our old Subes. Turbo is out of the question, however. I can't swap a EA82T and I don't think there's too many actual cars with it left. Then there's subyluvr2212 who actually went and just did some coolant line rewiring to chill his throttle body. Funky stuff like that which just might give an extra kick. Because a lot of little kicks can equal one big kick. Maybe I'm just tired of having to floor it to pass a friggin' Civic with 4 people in it... ...and they weren't even trying.
  7. Alright then, what about this: http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp?part=MSD-5200 My blaster coil recommends this ignition system (not that I'm 100% buying it). And somehow I think my ignition system from 1992 will at least be somewhat inferior to a system from the 2000s. Do you really think this module won't give me any boost at all? Or at the very least some mileage improvement? It also says that it's meant for stock vehicles, so I'm not going overkill. Does any have any experience with these devices? I'd like to know at least what others have done besides the whole Megaspark/Squirt deal to improve economy and performance, with regards to the fuel injection/fuel delivery/ignition system.
  8. Well, what about something like this: http://go.mrgasket.com/ProductDetails.aspx?brandId=0&productID=27377&majID=525&minID=5286&selection=16&minselection=23 or http://go.mrgasket.com/ProductDetails.aspx?brandId=0&productID=27317&majID=525&minID=5286&selection=16&minselection=23 I could imagine that a computer controlled ignition system that adjusts to load and RPM would be VERY effective. These sound like a lot of fun...what do you guys think, real deal or just snake oil?
  9. Now I've already utilized most simple performance upgrades in tuning my Loyale (coil, wires, cone filter, etc.) but I was wondering if there are any other ways to eke out some extra horses. I've been looking at MSDs line of ignition products and was wondering if anyone has installed a "performance rotor" Seriously, besides the whole Megaspark/squirt thing (which is probably out of my league) do people run performance distributors or ignition systems? Whats involved in installing something like that that? What about performance fuel injectors? Heck, what about alternators with a higher than stock output? (reminds me: would that be useful if I plan on adding more electrical equipment like amplifiers and the like?)
  10. Well, at the moment i have the option of buying some 15 inch aluminium wheels. What would be the best choice of tire if I planned on making the overall wheel/tire size slightly larger without sacrificing a great deal of accuracy? It's hard since I can't seem to visualize the different sizes, but I'm thinking something along the lines of an inch greater in overall diameter. Most important of all, will this affect my odometer reading?
  11. There we go. Now I can go back to my beater-turned-sleeper Loyale projects without feeling like I need a RX Turbo :-) Wait, I still feel like I need a RX Turbo...
  12. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that many people do not think highly of Loyales, which I presume is the cause of there hardly being any threads on "pimping" out Loyales. It's usually a GL or RX that gets all the attention. Isn't the Loyale simply a later version of these cars, with the exact same engine? Is there a reason why they aren't very desirable? Not that I feel ostracized for driving one, I'm just curious as to why everyone hates my baby
  13. So basically the tire would have to be thinner. Is there a way to adjust for all this? I would like to have wheels that as a whole fill out the tirewell a bit more and are more proportional to the rest of the car (which the stock ones don't seem to be, IMHO).
  14. Just was wondering if switching to a larger rim size would also mean other modifications were necessary. Will my speedometer be off if the overall size of the wheel is larger? By how much? Would it also affect the odometer? And would my mileage suffer? My Loyale seems to be able to accomodate at least a 14" quite easily, with there being a good amount of space in the tirewell. I'm hoping that 15" wouldn't be pushing it.
  15. Well, has anyone heard any horror stories about methanol? It sounds fairly intriguing. What about a 5% blend? Or is Ethanol a safer fluid? Besides that, where can I purchase these volatile substances?
  16. I'm wondering where you can buy pure methanol. I know some of the off-the-Autozone-shelf cleaners have methanol in them, but it's usually a blend. But I would like to burn 2-3 tanks with just pure 10% methanol in them to test it out.
  17. Well now, short of taking everything apart and scrubbing it seperately, what do you guys use to degunk your fuel system? Are there any preferred cleaners? Do you do a couple in quick succession? HAS someone actually stripped their fuel system and scrubbed it by hand? Do you use seperate cleaners for injectors and general fuel system? Is it particularly important to use stock filters, pumps, etc.? Any ways of optimizing the system? Thank you for your replies.
  18. Ya, same one. Was plug 'n play, all I needed were some bolts and washers from home depot.
  19. I also have a pic of my installed filter. I've actually left the bottom of the airbox in there. It practically cradles the filter so it's not banging around under the hood. I also didn't notice any improvement with the bottom taken out also. Same easy setup as alaningles'.
  20. That is undoubtly one of the most insane things I've ever heard anyone do with a car, which did not involve risking body damage.
  21. I must admit I've also purchased a MAF adapter and filter. The exact same distributor, in fact. I have yet to take out the bottom part of the airbox, though I doubt it will improve things much more. My engine already growls like a wild animal :-) I wonder if switching out this cheap filter for a K&N will do anything? How much more air can the engine get until the perormance curve flattens out? (5$ + shipping my rump roast, the "shipping" costs 16$)
  22. Sadly, I too often mistake old Toyota Camrys from a distance, thinking they're Subes. The body is really quite similiar to late 80s and early 90s Subarus like my Loyale. It got me wondering: What do these "imitations" (couldn't tell you what came first) have in common with our cars? How do they compare performancewise? Not that I've been able to test it yet, but I would believe that with a few performance mods my Loyale could outrun any of those buckets, maybe even with stock equipment. What do you think?
  23. Mine are BPR6EY-11, the ones that the NGK website gave me. The plugs should be gapped around 48 to 50. I've never gapped plugs before, so I think they all variate by 0.02 or so. How can one determine pinging? I still have yet to develop the ears that can determine when it's occuring.
  24. Well you see, I can actually hear my engine running more smoothly with the higher octane fuel. The extra kick I feel when accelerating may be psychosomatic, but I would swear that it at least *sounds* better. I'm just hoping advancing the timing won't increase the need for higher Octane.
