  1. Thanks for the help jezek! Sorry to hear about your internet! That really sucks... As far as the ASV goes, how did you plug it up? I'm assuming you removed the steel tubes attached to the heads, and the plugged up that hole somehow. What was your method for plugging it? Sorry if you mentioned it in your conversion thread and I just missed it. I will read through it again and repost if I found the answer in there. I'm guessing JB weld or some kind of epoxy putty.
  2. Pardon my ignorance, but where exactly is this "12V ignition source" for the electric choke and fuel cutoff solenoid? Edit: I think I have found a suitable source for the choke... I'm using the cluster of wires that used to power the Hitachi. the wire in the center of the cluster has 12V going to it when the the key is in the on position. For some reason the other wires have no power going to them.
  3. Weber swap is fully underway.... here's some pics of what I have done so far...
  4. I guess I should ask more questions... I read this in his conversation thread: ► The A.S.V. System needs to be Removed, so the rest of the Openings on the Exhaust, shall be Closed, otherwise your engine bay will become Noisy from exhaust... The main reason I don't want to get rid of it is because I assume it will make the car louder, however, the quote above makes me think I don't fully understand the ASV removal. So does that mean that if I remove the large metal tubes that are attached to the heads and plug them, then the car will be just as quiet as before?
  5. And just so we're clear, when I say ASV, I am referring to these two black silencers that are attached to the exhaust system...
  6. Quick question... i'm going to try to keep my ASV system for the noise reduction advantages. All that I need to do in order to keep the system is drill two new 5/8" holes in the new Weber airbox, then attach them via two 90 degree elbows, correct?
  7. Okay thank you. I know the purpose of the Hitachi gasket, I'm just trying to figure out why I have two Weber gaskets. I have an EA81 single piece adapter, so I guess I just use one gasket between the carb and adapter, and the other one was thrown in just in case I had a two piece adapter
  8. Okay so if I only use one, then why was I given two? It appears almost as if the gaskets are slightly different shapes. Could it be that one gasket is for a different type of intake manifold? Here is a picture illustrating my dilemma I guess I'll just use one gasket between the card and the adapter, but do you think it matters which one of the two brown gaskets that I use?
  9. Update: I'm home for the winter break and will be starting the conversion tomorrow. Quick question for Jeszek or anyone who can answer.... I saw in your conversation that you need two gaskets for the two piece ea82 adapter. I have two gaskets in the kit that came with my car that are supposed to go between the single piece adapter and the carb... do I use both of them sandwiched together? (So the installation order would be adapter, gasket, gasket, then carb?) Or is one of them just an extra and I only need one gasket? I know you said you needed two for the two piece adapter but I couldn't find a clear answer for the single piece adapter.
  10. The Hitachi issues could be due to clogged emulsion tubes or a float adjustment. Look at the little sight glass and see if the fuel level while idling is at the middle. If it is above the middle... adjust your float. Hitachi are carburetor hell though, so if you're new to carbs, I would not start by taking apart a Hitachi. From my understanding, the Webers base jets (PRI 140 and SEC 140) are extremely multipurpose... there are plenty of old threads that could be of help to you I'm sure. try using the search function in the top right of the page Welcome to the USMB by the way!
  11. Thanks for the good read naru! Carb icing makes a lot more sense now. any solutions to this problem? Any way to attach a stove pipe to the Weber, besides modding the stock air Cleaner?
  12. I guess we will find out how bad it is on the 32/36s... cause I live in a very cold climate. When I am not in Washington, im in the mountains of central Idaho, where the temp drops to as low as -30F some days, and a typical cloudless day in January will be around -10F to 20F degrees. This is the first time I have heard of icing issues with the Webers, so that make me wonder if there is a design difference in the 34/36s (of which I am not familiar) over the 32/36s. Can anybody else with a Weberized EA81 attest to the possibility of icing? Jesek, do you have any thoughts on this?
  13. Quick question to Jeszek or anyone else with an answer... is it normal for a Weber kit to come without the fuel cutoff solenoid or the throttle cable bracket? My new carb has neither...
  14. Well, to add to the frustration that I have been driving with a vacuum leak infested hitachi (STILL waiting on my Weber from Shawn...) I guess my blinkers have now decided that after 33 years, its time to retire. Basically, when I it the turn signal, the lights will all light up, but there is no "click" "click". I'm gonna guess that the resistor (would that be the correct term?) that controls the on/off action of the blinkers has gone ka-put... but I have no idea where that is located on my car (1984 wagon, EA81) or if that is even a correct hypothesis. Any ideas? I have tried using the hazards too, and the same result occurs... the blinkers will light up, but there is no clicking on and off. Just a solid light.
  15. Welcome to the forums! A quick search of the "Newer Gen" Form using the search feature in the top right of the screen should give you plenty of info to answer your questions. If nothing is found there or you still have questions, I would try reposting in the new gen form where they will be able to help you out. Again, welcome to the Soobie family!!
  16. I purchased it from the USMB store. Thus far, i have not found any numbers I could call... although I suppose I should just message one of the moderators
  17. I cannot say... perhaps one of the other members with more EA82 SPFI experience can help ya out. I'm guessing the intake manifolds for the SPFI and carbd models are different and most likely only the carbd intake manifold would be able to take a Weber... now I am completely guessing on that and someone please correct me if that is not correct. Update on coversion: STILL waiting on the carb to be shipped... can any of the moderators give me a little assurance that I didn't just blow $300 on a carb that is not gonna ship? It has been 15 days since my payment was processed (i.e. The carb is payed for), and still no news on the carb. Sorry if this comes off as being very impatient, I am just a little concerned that after 15 days, there is still no shipping information. If someone could just give me a time frame that it will be shipped out by, that would be very reassuring.
  18. Wasn't sure where to post this, but out of curiosity, is there an estimated time that it will take the USMB store to ship out a Weber carb 32/36 EA81 kit? My payment was accepted on 10th of October... I was just wondering what the time frame would be for when it would be shipped? It would be really nice to get it before November.
  19. Nope. Payment was approved but it still has not been shipped
  20. No no JeZek! Your information/conversion thread has been EXTREMELY helpful! Its just that in the beginning of your thread, you said that, "Many of the Ideas I'll explain here, might be applicable to the older Subaru EA81 engine as well, almost everything except the adapter plate." (underline and italics emphasis mine) Its this warning at the beginning that has me a little cautious, and why I am seeking clarification. Your thread(s) are incredibly helpful, unbelievably precise, and explain all steps and procedures with accuracy far greater than that of any repair manual I have read. I really want to do this job the right way the first time, and your thread has been an incredible resource for me! I just want to be triple sure of the important things like the PCV and fuel systems are not in the category of things that dont apply to the EA81. You have answered my questions perfectly, and I thank you for that and for all the major contributions you have made to the USMB. I am so sorry if I came off like I was ignoring or disregarding your answers.
  21. Thanks for the help and support everyone! I have been pouring over the fourms and JeZeks thread, and I have a few questions... 1st: Do I route the breather hoses from the rocker arm covers the same way as JeZek did with his EA82? I assume this is true, but I just want to make triple sure that everything in JeZeks thread transfers to the EA81 2nd: JeZek, what brand is your oil catch can? I am thinking about getting one, but cant find the one thats on your Bumble Beast 3rd: So far from what I have read on the conversion thread, no fuel pressure regulator is needed... again, just double checking to make sure I am understanding everything correctly. Also, following ihscouts warnings and the dread of inheriting another crap carb, I decided not to buy the craigslist one, and just start fresh with one from USMB. Right now the order has been placed, just awaiting payment approval.
  22. Thanks! I'm looking into that right now! I'm guessing I'll have to buy the adapter plate separate but that is okay.
