  1. Looking at timing belt kits on Amazon and have run across a couple of them. I know that a lot of members here use the Gates kit for 153.00, but can anyone give me a review on the Evergreen kit? It's only about $20 bucks more and looks to provide more components. (I won't presume to know what all of them are on sight.) There's also an AC Delco kit that provides three additional idler pulleys that I don't believe come with the other two kits. I'm just not sure which would provide me the best value. I'm leaning towards Evergreen, but like I said, a lot of people rave about Gates. 2. Thanks, I'll look into that. Hoping to get some things done to mine before fall, we'll see what happens.
  3. In the "Before" pic, did you make that skid plate, or was that purchased? Also, thinking about putting in a snorkel. If I recall correctly, you had some parts fabbed by a local shop and others you put in DIY. Any tips?
  4. Nice looking rack you've got there. Every time I'm on I see more and more on these forums that leads me to believe that Subaru owners are some of the most innovative people around.
  5. Thanks for the compliments. I'm proud of it. Blue book value was well over what I paid for it and it's a blast to drive. Hoping it'll be around for a few years so I can fix it up, do some mods, and pass it on to my daughter when she's old enough to drive.
  6. Thanks. I'll check with a couple of scrappers that come around and see if they've got anything. If that doesn't work, I'll check with the local DPW.
  7. I'll have to try that and let you know. I had an alignment done this weekend, it needed one anyway, but no change after. The shop was closing and didn't have time to rotate the tires front to back, but they did suggest that it could be the new brake pads settling into the old rotors that were left on when the dealer had the brakes changed.
  8. Thank you Vegablade for your input. Any thoughts on building a decent skid? Amusingly enough I've heard that road signs make a pretty good skid plate. Any other suggestions?
  9. No idea when the last routine maintenance on this car was done. All I know is that the engine looks clean and is virtually rust-free. Unfortunately it didn't come with any maintenance records, so I'm guessing at everything.
  10. Yes, all 4 tires replaced with new. All same brand, model & size. I'm having an alignment done tonight on the car, i'll ask them to rotate the tires front to back and see if that helps. I'm also going to check the rear diff fluid levels while they've got it on the lift.
  11. ferp, I think I've seen that one on here. I was considering giving it a shot as well, but wanted to get multiple views before attempting anything. Hoping to get opinions from people with more viable knowledge than what I possess.
  12. Will do, I'll keep my eyes open and let you know if I find anything noteworthy. I'm beginning to kick myself for selling my old SUV. I'm willing to bet I could've found a way to rig up the brand new shocks/struts into the baja.
  13. Unfortunately ezapar, when it comes to money, I'm always screwed. Comes with the territory of having 3 kids, 2 dogs, a wife, and one income. Can't always get what I want, but always have what I need. Any ideas on things I could get out of the pick-n-pull that would accomplish what I'm looking to do?
  14. Yes, the tires were replaced after the initial test drive. I'll look them up to check reviews re: road noise. But wouldn't that also occur in the front of the car as well? I'm only hearing this in the back end of the car. The other reason I'm not suspecting the tires is because it occurs on both the asphalt road as well as my gravel driveway. (Very low pitch when in reverse, but still evident.) Thank you for confirmation regarding the alignment, that takes a lot off my mind. Still have to check the fluid levels this weekend though.
  15. I'm looking for some inexpensive ways to make my '05 Baja more off-road capable. It looks pretty well stock underneath the hood. I'd like to get a couple inches of additional ground clearance and some protection for the underbelly. Little to no money can be diverted from household bills for these projects. Any ideas?
  16. I just bought an '05 Baja and I haven't had a chance to go through it yet with a fine tooth comb to make sure all the fluids are at proper levels. (That's this Saturday.) When I first took it for the test drive it didn't have noise, but when I picked it up from the dealer it was there is now a whining in the back of the car when slowing down. The dealer said only thing he had done was new tires and new brake pads all around to pass inspection. The noise gets louder when I put on the brakes, but the pitch doesn't change. It sounds almost like a turbine engine powering down, not like brake grinding or road noise. I've heard that whenever the tires are replaced an alignment needs to be done to prevent damage to the rear diff, could this possibly be the source of the noise? I haven't tried putting in the fuse to turn off the AWD, but that'll be my next test if need be.
  17. Just want to say thanks for the input. I'm sure I'm over my head with all of this, so I'll probably be on here a lot as time goes on. :-)
  18. Just bought a 2005 Baja because I loved the look. Now I'm wondering what I can do about parts. It's got 150,000 miles on it and was bought from a "dealer" who got it at auction. I'm sure it's going to need something eventually, I'm just looking to find out what models and years have parts that I can match up. Right now I'm looking for headlights and the sheild that covers the bottom of the car beneath the engine. Looks like someone removed it to change oil and never put it back.
  19. Hey all, I'm a new member to the USMB. Last week I picked up my first Subaru, a 2005 Subaru Baja from a dealer who bought it at auction. I'm hoping that it'll work well for these CNY/Upstate NY winters. Just here to say hey and I hope to reach out more as time goes on.
