  1. A valve job is always a good idea if it is done correctly and the clearances are set. The clearance changes a lot when you cut the valves so you really have to start over, bit of a pain. If you can afford it you avoid the instance of having a valve burn later or finding out a vlave is already burnt after reinstalling the heads.
  2. Fuel hoses leaking are very common at the start of winter, but can happen anytime.
  3. I see you are up in Sonoma. I was thinking you might try my car if you are ever donw San Mateo way and see if it works about the same. If your car is doing what it is supposed to and you disable you might flunk smog if you have it.
  4. All I can say is thats what I did and I'm still here. I disconnected it the night before in case my Chilton's was wrong.
  5. My 5 speed does this a little bit to cut emissions I believe. When you chop the throttle it causes unburnt gas to dump. It raises the idle a bit and take a moment to come down to prevent this. My ECU is always thinking while I'm just listening to the stereo. Between the electrical load changes, emissions stuff, and AC an automatic is often worse in this regard.
  6. I've used the jack for years, but the best thing is an air wrench if you have it.
  7. If you use it for a job or maybe have a place in the country it could be great. My friend's other choice would be a van or pickup and it does a good job for him. I actually use my 4wd drive which is almost unusual here in CA. The Forester does all my hauling and when it has to slog though the mud or snow I am very happy to have it. The Element could be a choice for 90% of my stuff, but I don't need the extra space and the fact that it is harder to park in the city, has no 4wd which would cause me to change my life a bit, and get poor mileage would nix it for me. Plus the fact that the styling does not appeal to me and I have to look at my cars for many years.
  8. An element is a Honda sports Hearse isn't it? A guy I know has one for his carpenter job and he loves it. It rode pretty well when we did a remodeling job in LA. The only thing he does not like is that it gets very poor gas mileage. I was surprised that I was averaging much better with an old 4wd Forester.
  9. Last I knew there were no Autozones in Kiwi and I sure never noticed one in New Plymouth. I'll see if my Brother in law Jed knows anybody who would read it for you. they are friends with a guy who owns a bike place and I know he takes his Subies someplace for repair. Legacy 777 has some code reading stuff on his site I understand and that might be in the stickies above.
  10. Everybody advised me to go NGK when I did mine at 120,000. I have been very happy with the fact that it works fine. No need to reinvent the wheel and if you don't have problems stay with what works. After the price of the plugs for my BMW which are about a car payment I was thrilled to get good stuff for a tenner.
  11. Hey Nip, what if the electronic speed sends a VSS signal to the tranny control? Now you don't have the proper control and there is no provision for the proper signal. The 95 CPU wuld not wrk because it still is not getting a signal for speed. I don't really have info on Subie's auto set up, I'm just going on how it works on some BMWs I am familiar with. Without the VSS signal on a BMW there are several problems you can have from mixture to cruise and even the radio ties in.
  12. Actually it is much easier if the car is in front f you and not over the Internet.
  13. But what else can you test for 10 bucks that might fix it? If you pull your current plug and it is white and shows evidence of pinging it can't hurt to go down a range.
  14. For Olnick sorry, I hate to say anything that might disparage a 2.2. For dman, yup that sounds like clutch stuff. On the other hand the clutch sometimes ticks on until it slips. Some folks say they have had luck cleaning with Seafoam or adding Marvel Mystery oil to free up stuck lifters. I have always dissasembled and replaced the lifter myself. One other thing to remember is that sometimes 2.2s tick when the oil pump gasket leaks because they don't make full pressure. If it were mine I'd check the pressure with a guage to be sure.
  15. I am sure you have some kind of warranty on the work. If it were mine I would drive it as much as possible to find any problems before the warranty ends. If you have the noise again you might want to get a second opinion.
  16. You need to read the codes to start with. If it has not had a tune up and fuel filter change that would be due.
  17. Yes it can. Sometimes they clack after a belt job and then straighten out. I would think your engine likely to have piston slap when cold that makes a rapping sound. That is considered normal if it goes away when warm.
  18. Is it an old 2.2 with hydraulic lifters? I have heard a number of them tick a bit from stuck lifters.
  19. Yep, you have to live with it for years so test drive the exact models you might be interested in. If possible I prefer to drive the very car I am considering as suspension and appointments can vary.
  20. There are several things it could be after fairly extensive work like that. Anything from a drive belt tensioner to something related to the engine removal. Go with the mechanic for a drive if possible and demonstrate the noise that concerns you.
  21. Not sure how your car is equipped by certain Subies I drove in NZ used to have a warning that you were exceeding 100 KPH. this was some kind of JDM thing and I think it was phased out after a couple of years. On some cars the warning was adjustable. Not sure if this is your issue, did you get a manual with the car?
  22. You know Gnu I've only seen that one once. A guy had a piece fall into his clutch and he said it bound up and bent his fork. At least that was his theory of how it happened. It will reqire pulling it apart if that is the problem.
