92 legacy will not rev over 4500 rpm
cookie replied to pothole bill's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy guess is no oxegen sensors? This could make it run in limp mode could it not?

Magical Green clips on newer Legacy??
cookie replied to hyteck9's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think they allow the dealer to perform a self test. they are supposed to stay disconnected.

2000 Outback burns/looses 1/2 a quart of oil-between oil chgs
cookie replied to pdxsuby's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy opinion would be that the oil use is pretty normal for that age. It may be time to replace some seals and the oil slinger thingy. Most Subarus I've heard of don't actually have oil pan leaks, just seals and that interesting plastic piece by the rear seal. (One of you guys with a memory please help out with the name.) Read the sticky FAQ above on this stuff.

2000 Outback/used
cookie replied to billyboy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf it has the coolant additive it should have a sticker on the radiator or door frame that say it was added. The additive has caused no gunk in my car, but I keep the coolant pretty clean.

New Generation? Where's The Cutoff?
cookie replied to Juan's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'd hate to lose the early 90s guys because I've gotten some very good advice from them. You'd be lucky enough to lose me too as mine is a 99. I was in Portland Oregon this week and rented an 06 Legacy with about 1,000 miles on it. My wife commented that it was a cut above our usual rental car. So many things felt the same between my 99 Forester and this car. It even still has the Subaru virgin switch, the controls work the same and it was nice and tight. They finally seem to have got the cruise control software right, at least on this brand new car. When I flew back here the old Forester with 127,000 on it was almost surprising in how good it felt after all those miles. I agree with the folks who say Subaru has not changed a lot and it is a good thing!

2.5 bad head gasket era
cookie replied to mwerger's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf it is an Outback sport does it have a 2.2? Those don't have head gasket problems.

After Water Blasting The Carbon... Less Slap.
cookie replied to blitz's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXRemoving carbon reducing slap is quite possible. The carbon could cause the piston to tilt to one side during firing it seems.

advice: '99 legacy brighton SE
cookie replied to theosubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf the car is a 2.5 head gasket could be a concern. Do a search here on head gaskets. Hopefully some of our Canadians can help with price.

Power outlet
cookie replied to ctoth's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe is a fuseable link in the socket if I recall. It is very common for Subaru owners to short this out with adapters. Pop out the socket and see if you have power to it.

cookie replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSenders corroding have been worse in the last few years. It is nice to know there is a product to keep you from getting covered with gas.

Coolant Conditioner ... to goop or not to goop?
cookie replied to hohieu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSome Prestone antifreeze produckts have a supended stop leak in them, this stuff goes in solution (it's quite watery) and is supposed to work like antifreeze with stop leak.

Coolant Conditioner ... to goop or not to goop?
cookie replied to hohieu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think that was in the letter I got too. Not that the warranty means much anymore at 127,000 and counting.

Coolant Conditioner ... to goop or not to goop?
cookie replied to hohieu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDid a second goop app when coolant was changed. This was what my dealer reccomended. I'll probably change the coolant again next year and do a third.

Coolant Conditioner ... to goop or not to goop?
cookie replied to hohieu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI was one of the first to install it in the US about 40,000 miles ago now. no problems at all.

23 MPG alright?
cookie replied to kimokalihi's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOur Foresters are pretty boxy and that kind of limits our mileage. I get 24-25 mostly and I've seen the rare shot of near 28 on the highway.

CEL, symptoms...please help me decide what to do next
cookie replied to skizix's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAs I said mine did throw a code, PO 420, usually associated with cats. Several folks have reported driveability problems with Subaru O sensors, but I don't recall if they had a code. Frankly an O2 sensor is supposed to run 100,000 miles and you have done that. Everybody told me to change my cats but they were several hundred bucks. The O sensor was $60 and I already had over 100,000 miles on it so changing it was just maintenence. If nothing else this has made me happy for a year. My code did not come back for quite a while when I cleared it but third time I changed the sensor. If the O sensor does not fix everything you have only changed a cheap part you are supposed to change.

Name this part
cookie replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBMW often uses restirctions or clutch delay valves also. If you have a type of car that folks tend to beat they can prevent serious damage. BMW hot rodders often remove them.

CEL, symptoms...please help me decide what to do next
cookie replied to skizix's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXfirst thing I'd do is replace the front ox sensor. I assume that threw code PO 420. My car acted like that too and a complete fix was 10 minutes and $60. I hope you have the same luck. Front ox sensors are a known weird problem around here.

Puffy Blue Clouds
cookie replied to Wayne Boncyk's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXhang in there nip, I saw my friend Leo who has been through much the same over the holiday. he has moved to CA for the weather and now is starting to walk and not look like he is in constant pain. It takes time. About that pcv valve even if they don't seem gummed sometimes changing an old one improves oil loss.

2004 piston slap? or only older models?
cookie replied to DMc-DE's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXcan't say about the warranty but the piston slap is only an irritation. Many companies are having slap problems and my oil tests come up clean. If it goes away when warm it should be fine.
