  1. Thanks again Moosens! Would you happen to have any info on the earlier clips? A picture, source or part number?
  2. Does anyone have a source to buy rocker panel trim clips for my '80 Brat? Or another type of clip that works?
  3. Thanks, Moosens! I tried posting this to my Subie facebook groups but for some reason it wont let me? I must be in facebook jail again for something. Let me know if you happen to come across one.
  4. What’s the recommended tire size (13”) for my 1980 (Gen 1) Brat? And what are some other sizes that have worked for people. I’m looking for a quality set of tires for my brat and would prefer to put on the original size,
  5. I know this is an older thread but I’m wondering how the 40 over pistons worked? I’m in the same boat. I only need to bore 20 but 40’s are all I can find. I just hate boring that far if I don’t need to but it looks like I don’t have a choice.
  6. Need a thermostat for my rebuilt EA71 in a ‘78 Brat. Both 195 and 180 degrees are listed as the OE temps. What Is the correct operating temp of a ‘78 Brat?
  7. Thanks! but I think I’ve got a set found. If they don’t show up I’ll get ahold of you.
  8. Looking for a set of valves for my ‘78 Brat with an EA71. Especially the exhaust valves. Let me know if you have some or any ideas where I can find some. I’m striking out everywhere I look.
  9. Thanks George! That answers my question. I would have never guessed that the number will be at the bottom and right side up on cylinders 1 and 4 and will be at the top and upside down on cylinders 2 and 3.
  10. I’m assembling my EA71 and went to put the pistons in but got confused. I’ve always been taught to put the marking on the piston orientated up. These pistons are from ETI and have the marking 0.75 stamped into them. However if I put the 0.75 at the top it is upside down? This just seems odd. Should it go upside down on top or right side up on the bottom? Or does it even matter?
  11. Is it a backfire coming through the carb or an afterfire coming from the exhaust? On warm days with the engine running at temp for a while I will get a good afterfire coming from the exhaust when I shut it down. My engine has some pretty good wear and the blowby is fed into the air cleaner causing a rich condition when the engine is hot. My theory is that these gasses collect in the exhaust system enough that they detonate when the engine is shut down. I don’t want to vent my blowby outside of the engine so I installed a oil catch can and that helped slightly but my only real solution is to rebuild the motor.
  12. No grinding, slipping or popping out. Just difficult to get it into reverse. Have to really slam the shifter a few times before it engages into the reverse position.
  13. My ‘78 Brat with a 4 speed is difficult if not impossible to get into reverse most of the time. All other gears go in just fine. Is this a clutch adjustment issue or something deeper?
  14. Looking for a right rear tail light lens, a knob for the 4wd shifter and a matching set of wheels for a ‘78 Brat. Let me know if you want to sell any of these. Thanks
  15. Anyone know where I can find a passenger side tail light lens for a '78 Brat? I know they're hard to find but I'm starting to think it's impossible.
  16. Thanks moosens, the plug on the passenger side of my block does have an Allen head. There is also one on the drivers side that's blocked by the water pump but it looks like it's the same size. Everything I've found says the plug should be 36 mm but mine is 26mm for some reason?
  17. I recently purchased a Kats 11405 (36mm) block heater for my '78 Brat with the EA71. It is supposed to thread into the hole directly to the right of the crank pulley. Everything I've read and found from Kats says this hole should be 36mm. However, the hole in my block is only 26mm with a plug that's removed with a 14mm hex head socket. Anyone else have any experience with this or know the correct block heater that I should be using?
  18. 1978 Subaru Brat, 1600, 4 Speed, Tan 1. Passenger side tail light lens 2. Tailgate handle access cover plate 3. Both front fenders 4. Door rear view mirrors Thanks, otterby@hotmail.com
  19. Thanks grossgary. I have found that style spring (clip) but I think it is for vehicles newer than 78. Mine has two small coil springs that attach to the transmission itself and to the bearing carrier keeping the throwout bearing pulled tight to the transmission while the clutch is engaged. I'm kinda thinking they aren't needed since mine were both broken and everything seemed to be working fine. I just want to make everything right while its apart if I can.
  20. Does anyone know where I can find the two small springs that go between the throwout bearing carrier and the transmission on a1978 Brat? I can not find them anywhere.
