I disagree with the OPs approach, assumptions and language - but I understand his perspective and expecting an apology seems over the top at this point.  He doesn’t know what’s true or untrue but I think the title and language could be edited.

***To him it could appear that no resolution happened until this was escalated.***

Few of us would be impressed by someone taking something for 6 months and then only returning it once there was public pressure and they were “forced” to.

I wouldn’t apologize to someone that needed “forced” to give my stuff back and couldn’t do it under their own accord for half a year. I’d say “thank you” and move on.

Im not saying that’s what happened, but it could look like it to the OP.

There’s no way to prove whats “true” or “untrue” with 100% one sided circumstantial evidence. I think we can help without trying to ascertain true or untrue.

I think the OP should edit the language to reflect dissatisfaction over an anecdotal, complicated personal transaction and just state facts. The language used borders libel and slander for a complicated personal transaction with limited data.

The OP could have chosen to arrange their own shipping or gotten the item themselves but chose to pay an individual and let them do all the work.  There’s a “cost” to expecting people to do the bulk of heavy and difficult labor inexpensively.

You found an inexpensive rare trans from a reputable person - do everything you can to work and get it.  Fly out arrange shipping yourself...etc. (which I have done before).  Too lazy or busy to do it?  Then don’t be surprised when shipping cumbersome transmissions doesn’t go smoothly sometimes.

Thank you. But I will change the first post so everyone will calm down. And as far as shipping. He offered it to me for $500 shipped. So I figured he had everything planned out if he knew how much he could ship it for

Sensors not, switches yes. These babies have one for reverse, one for neutral, one for fifth and one for low range and a fifth one too? if I got it correct. You can sort of then work them out when you look at the line of the three shift rails.

Good that you got it. I hope your centre diff is better than the one I got from a Subaru member over here. Cost me $800 ten years ago

Yeah I meant sensor haha. So really only one I need to use is the reverse for the reverse light and lo range for the dash light. What would 5th gear be used for

That's still not an actual apology, like you said you would post...

Actually I messaged him and apologized to him and asked him about some of the sensors that were damaged in shipping and what they were so I could get knew one. And the reply I got after that was "want me to see if they pay a damage claim". No it's all good sorry for taking so long. Still no explanation. So if he's good then I'm good. I'm not gonna worry myself about It. I apologize to him and showed everyone he did come thru. So it is what it is now

I am glad this all ended well for you. Years ago I built the same FT 4WD 5MT center locking trans for my EJ swapped '83 Wagon. I swapped the 3.9 ring and pinion from an XT6 trans in and also 23 spline stubs so I could retain stock EA81 front axles. I wanted to go with the 1.59 low range set but never made it that far. As it is now it's an awesome car even with the only slightly lower low range.

Dont happen to have another 3.9 ring and pinion laying around do you

    Right on Shawn !

Hey man , life can be brutally busy for many of us. That’s not just some b/s excuse. Hang in there and have faith.

You understandably thought you’d do some good by letting us all know , but a lot of us know the guy well enough to know that he simply is not a rip-off.

Yes , I see there’s another guy or two who feel burned. But I’m confident there’s a good reason why things appear to have gone wrong.

I understand we get busy. But all I ever ask for was a explanation and a response which I never got. And I'm glad he's not a rip-off. Cause it would suck for the guy who made this awesome forum to be screwing people over. I never wanted to do this but it seemed like posting about it was the only way I would get a couple responses before he went silent again.

I think you should go back to all the places you posted this and actually post the words "I'm sorry Shawn," and change the title of the thread, because he clearly didn't take your money and run.

As stated by @Checkerboard Comet, a reputation can be ruined in an instant.  You need to do your part to help rebuild the damage to Shawn's reputation.

I have went back already posted he did ship it but still needs to better his communication. Cause either way ignoring messages for months is not the way to do business. But I will change the title as soon as I figure out how

  7. Well transmission finally showed up. Glad he did keep his word. But there still should have been more communication on his part. Didnt seem to he a tracking number on it either. Which is fine all he had to do is say so. All he had to do he send me a pic of the packing slip and that would have been fine. Pallet looked like hell put tranny seems fine minus a few broke wires on some sensors. With that said anyone got a wiring diagram for a dual range ft4wd 5speed so can figure out what all is what and also will be looking for a xt6 3.9 ring gear and pinion, a 5speed 1.5 lo gear set, and I remember reading something about a premade kit to mount it with. I think his name was Jerry. His he still making them.

You should sign up for one, as long as you don't go crazy and carry a massive balance month-to-month it's a good way to build your credit rating, important if you ever plan to buy a house, finance a car, or a lot of other things, actually.

I would have pulled the plug on the payment much earlier.  Why did you wait almost six months before you did anything?  If you paid with your credit card over Paypal (versus paying from your checking account) you can probably file a claim with them.  With CC companies, it's on the seller to prove the product was delivered.

Outside of the whole debacle with Shawn, consider this an expensive lesson learned about sending money through the internet.

Doesn't sound like he was screwed by PayPal, he just missed the cutoff to file a claim by a week (which he very likely would have won).

Most of the wait was like I said. He told me he had a car wreck which took me a month to get that reply. So I told him to just ship it when he felt better. Months went by and I just lost track of it. And what the deal was took forever to get a reply finally he said he was having a hard time finding a way to ship it. I told him a few different ways which one was fastenal. He said he would check with them. Then he said the kid didnt know anything about it. So he would find another way. No response after that for awhile. So I put it on Facebook the first time. He finally responded. Said he was dropping it off at fastenal that day. Waited almost another month asked him where it was. Said he went to fastenal and they never shipped it. Then the next day he said it was going out on some freight. I asked for tracking number and have not heard from him since Oct 21. Haven't talked to the bank yet. Think it would matter that it wasnt a credit card and was my debit card?

I hate to hear when a forum member gets screwed by another member, but this is the internet after all, and you are in charge of protecting yourself.

@IROCDUDE89 How did you pay for the transmission?  Paypal has buyer protection or if you used a credit card you can file a claim with them.  If you paid as a gift, Venmo, wire transfer or anything else, consider this an expensive lesson.

@carfreak85 I used PayPal goods and services. And I tried to file a claim and they can only do something up to 180 days. And I missed that by a week. So they won't do anything.

This is not the first time the dude has taken 100-200 reminders to respond or square up. We have had bad experiences as well and I know of many others... And $500 is a huge number. I see them online for 200 all day.... I saw the first post and it had a lot of support. Then was deleted? Not Cool at all!

Really? 6 months ago I couldn't find one period. Even posted on here and all the Facebook pages and he's the only one to offer one. Which the $500 is for tranny and shipping. I figured shipping would be close to $200

I will say that a proper explanation from Shawn would be a lot more helpful than deleting the previous thread. Why can't we all just work this out and help both parties to a mutually beneficial solution? I've got a lot of use from this forum and I thank Shawn for maintaining it for us. I would chip in for shipping to get this transmission to his customer if that's what needs to happen. I don't see this being that difficult to resolve and I don't see how ignoring it or deleting it will help either.

    GD

Thanks I didn't think I was asking for much. But when the first post was deleted. It just made the situation look worse.

    Also called defamation.

Maybe IROCDUDE89 wants to be sued.

Nothing false about what I posted. If need to post the screenshots of our conversation I will.  Cause at this moment in time him ignoring messages and giving no explanation as to what is going on makes him look like he took my money an ran. If i get my transmission or my money back. I'll apologize but it still doesnt explain why he want message me back or what's going on. If anybody should be sueing it should be me at this point in time. Cause I have paid for goods 6 months ago and still not received

I don't think Fasetenal (who is not shipping company, per se)  gives tracking #'s

Either way......Callling Shawn a thief in this situation is a stretch.  We all respect him and his business.  You aren't goin to convince us that he's a crook or out to screw you over and take yer damn $500 buck (a totally super duper price for a FT4wd D/R box with 23 spine stubs swapped in)

He's not a liar or a thief.  you sound like a petulant child whining that you didn't get yer christmas present yet.

This is why I don't ship engines or transmissions.  It's a difficult process, and as soon as something hit's a snag......you get dragged by the person who understandably is irritated at not getting their parts.

Maybe you should find another RX fulltime trans for a super deal.

Or maybe just drag yer knuckles back to yer IROC

But stop calling Shawn a liar or a thief.  He is neither.

He never shipped it thru fastenal.  He said fastenal never shipped and he picked it back up and I never heard from him again. And after posting this I've found out he's done multiple people this way. And if there wasnt a tracking number he should have said so. And been like it should take this long to get there if it doesnt let me know but instead he ignores messages. And I've got screenshots of all the messages and me messaging him multiple times and might get a response months later. Im a laid back guy and very patient and normally dont do this but I've waited 6 months so i have the right to be pissed. And it's not that hard. I've shipped whole 3 wheelers before. So I know what it takes to ship big items. If your saying he's such a good guy then why dont he tell me what's going on. Communication is all I'm asking for. Is something happened let me know. But ignoring me just makes you look like a liar.

I dont care at this point something is gonna get done. Got all the other facebook pages for help anyways. He's either gonna man up and provide me a tracking number if he really did ship it, my money back, or make it where no one does business with him again. Cause the only thing bgg I hate more than a liar is a theif and he's shaping up to be both. But thanks for looking out buddy

  15. Although very very poor communication and 6 months later transmission was recieved. So all those that said heis not a thief and is a good guy. I'm glad you was right. I'm sorry that it had to come to all this but it seemed like this was the only way to get any actions to be took. Still do not know what happened  was never offered an explanation. So can not tell his side of the story. And would have been more than happy to put up both sides of the story so it didn't look so one sided.

Ok, we need to clear a few things up here:

    - firstly. When talking about these gearboxes we need to decipher them as PT4WD or FT4WD/AWD licking centre diff gearbox.

    - the EA81 PT4WD gearbox (I’m 99% sure) is fitted with the 1.447:1 and is mounted differently in the gearbox to that of the EA82 gearboxes and the EJ dual range gearboxes that you don’t have.

    - the pinion shaft on the FT4WD (locking centre diff gearbox) is THE LONGEST Subaru have produced to date.

    - EJ pinions do not fit without modifying them with the locking centre diff pinion in the mix. I’m not even sure if it’s possible to modify two EJ pinions to make the required length of the EA locking centre diff pinion box.

    - the locking centre diff gearbox came in two ratios - 3.7 and 3.9.  Dual range and single range were both available. Pinions and ratios from the PT4WD WILL NOT FIT!

    - If you want a DUAL RANGE box you’ll need the AWD dual range gearsets. To make a dual range box from a single range box either requires another AWD dual range box (EJ or EA) or to do a super dodgy and match the lower AWD gearset with an upper dual range PT4WD gearset of the same ratios. Not the done thing.

    - the OBX front LSD will fit. With the low range you will need to shave the retainer bolt heads on an angle. I also recommend rebuilding this lsd with the spring and cone washer kit available online.

    - the diff centre in this locking centre diff box is OPEN. An lsd cannot be added to this diff. BUT - with an EJ AWD ring, pinion centre diff (with the factory LSD) and marched housing to the centre diff, and the EA dual range AWD gearsets you can effectively build an EJ dual range gearbox - in an EA case.  The EA AWD gearset will fit on the EJ pinion and work with an EJ centre diff. Custom tail shaft, gear linkages and gearbox xmem will be needed.

    - PT4WD gearboxes are only “good” for their decent/awesome low range options that can be easily fitted to the L series AWD locking centre diff gearbox

    - no factory EA box came with a front LSD

    - the AWD locking boxes are rare and spare parts are in the form of other AWD locking boxes

Once home and on the computer I’ll post up some picks of my build with the EJ cases, L series 1.59:1 dual range, 4.111:1 diff ratio and shaved crown wheel, locking centre diff and auxiliary oil feeders to help keep low range cool.

@czny - I don’t know the process used. What ever is used in mining drilling equipment is what was done to my shaft. I’d expect that other parts of the pinion shaft will break before this weld job does.

@IROCDUDE89 - sorry dude, NOT for sale. Plus shipping would practically double the cost! You be better off buying a low km EJ dual range and drop the DCCD centre diff setup in along with the 1.59:1 low range.

    Cheers

    Bennie

Thanks  @el_freddo and @FerGloyale for all the info. I have found a rx tranny with brat stubs already in it. I think I might get it and find someone selling a xt6 3.9 and a 1.5 lo. And that'll be good enough for now might throw a lsd in while I'm at it and find a lsd for the rear later. If you know anyone with parts I need for sell let me know. And if I had the spare money to do a full ej swap I'd go that route. But for for now I just wanna upgrade to a 5speed and I like the thought of getting rid of the PT 4wd since I run mine in 4wd most of the time any way

  17. 15 hours ago, FerGloyale said:

No.  Not with stock parts.  D/R Locking diff boxes like this in 3.7 in the RX only.

I suppose there is the 3.9 Fulltime single range box from XT6....you could use that R+P.  But you'd also need to swap the entire lower gear/synchro set from the 3.7 box onto the pinion shaft (Different ratios for 2-5, and second is cast into upper shaft pf D/R so you gotta keep the gears that match it) so now you need 3 boxes to make one, and 2 of those are already rare as hens teeth to find.

Perhaps a custom pinion could be welded up on a lathe?

So I can't use the 3.9 low gear with 1.5 lo.  Cause i really want the 1.5 instead of the 1.19 Sorry I don't really know how the hi/lo work in these things never looked inside one.

  18. 55 minutes ago, Crazyeights said:

I left the 1.19 in it. I would like to go back in and put the 1.5x in it but I don't want to tear apart a good dual range for the donor parts. I already had a junk XT6 trans and that's what gave me the idea to use the 3.9 ring and pinion. I wonder if I could fit an LSD carrier in there while I'm at it Hmm....

I thought the rx already had a lsd in the front and rear. And could I use the 1.5 gear out of my 4 speed or does it have to be from a 5 speed. And does the 3.9 have to come from xt6 or can I use my my 4 speed one. Sorry I've never really looked at the inside of one and don't really know how the hi/lo works in them. Just trying to figure out what all parts are interchangeable

  19. 8 hours ago, el_freddo said:

Mine was a custom job. The 4.111:1 ring and pinion came from a forester box or a dead wrx single range box.

I don’t know what this would cost as I purchased my initial 4.111:1 modified L awd pinion shaft with its matching ring (crown) gear.

That wasn’t the best work, and a few years later I sheared off the weld - turned out it only had 2mm of penetration. I was visiting mates 3500km from home, so wasn’t exactly a convenient time for this to happen (better than the middle of the Nullarbor though!!).

Through the Subi mate’s network someone knew someone else that owed them a favour - and we got a new shaft made up from the broken one, and the job was done properly this time!  The shaft was beveled, had a male stub on one piece and a female section on the other to help mate and centre the two parts together, these were pressed together.

Then a specific welding process was used to fill the beveled section with layers etc. it was a very deep weld and a slow one to complete. Then a “cap weld” was done to finish the welding off. This cap weld was then machined flat to the height of the rest of the shaft. Bloody artwork!!  It had a slight bend in it - about .1 thou - but then we worked out that the lathe has .04 of free play in the clutch so it was probably a lot closer to dead straight A’s humanly possible.  No vibrations so all is good!

The most astonishing bit was that the floor manager of the workshop allowed the work pro bono!

So a couple of slabs of beer were promptly arranged!

To work the cost out though I had a welder and a machinist working on the shaft for close to five hours. It didn’t seem to take that much time while we were there!  But it was a bit of involved process - and having the two experts there collaborating with each other sped up the time that it may have taken if I were doing this at home at a local shop.

It is well worth the effort, but consider going the 4.44 ;)  R180’s are much easier to find in 4.44 and air or elockers are available for this diff - of course mods must be done to make either fit though!

    That’s my next project!!

    Cheers

    Bennie

Sound like you just need to sell me your setup so you can start on your next project lol
