  1. My car is a 2001 Forester with 90k miles on her.

From my searching online, it seems like the usual suspects for leaks on cars 5+ yrs old are: 1. O-rings at ports and 2. Condensor rusting out and getting a hole in it.

If #2 happens to you, and your car is 5+ yrs old, tell the mechanic to replace all the O-rings while he is in there -- just for good preventive maintenance. That way, you won't have to go back into his shop a few weeks later to have them replaced for $187.30 like I did.

  2. 2001 Forester, 90k miles. A/C has always worked fine, never any work done on it. Worked fine through 2hr trip one night, then the next morning...no cool air at all. Fan blew, but only warm ambient air. I checked all belts, fuses and relay switch, but all were ok. I looked over all hoses and lines, couldn't see condenser well, since it is jammed in there...but saw no obvious leaks. There is no sight glass on modern a/c systems. I tried to listen to the compressor under the hood as my wife turned the a/c on and off, and I couldn't hear it engaging so I figured that must be the culprit. I took it to the shop (Mike's in Allston) and his guess as I dropped it off was not the compressor, but a leak somewhere in system. He re-pressurized and immediately found the leak in lower driver's side corner of the condenser. $520 later for a new condenser, I am back on the road with cold a/c. Just wanted to share symptoms and resolution to help the next guy.

  3. Hi,

On my 2001 Forester, I found the black ABS connector above the brake pedal, I stuck the nearby black ground wire into the lower right hole, and I have read out the codes. What I need now is a website that describes what each code means. Does anyone know of a website I can go to to find this out? I believe my codes were: 23, 24, 27. Thx for any help. And thx to Porcupine for telling me how to get the codes using the connector.

  4. I am riding Winterforce M&S on my 2001 Forester and they easily handled the 8" of global warming that got dumped on us last night in Boston. The problem is not you and your 4wd car if it rolls fine, the problem is that every 3rd wurld cab driver around Boston has rear wheel drive and bald tires....so they clog up every intersection, and you go nowhere. Took me an hour to cover about 6 miles to get home.

  5. Dang...So, I really like this indie shop, but.....

I took it to them to have both rear bearings replaced. This place has always done quality, fast work at a decent price on all my cars. Welllllllll, yesterday they tried to pull the ole, "your ABS wire must have been damaged cuz it broke, but don't worry we soldered it back together for you." Riiiiiiiiiight. Youbetcha! So, I asked him if they did a good job repairing the ABS wire? "Oh, yes, it's like new now." I said, great, "so you don't mind giving me a 5 yr replacement warranty on that ABS sensor? Since I examined all of my sensors and wires 2 months ago when I had to replace a front one(which a previous mechanic had broken and soldered back together, btw)...and the rear wires were in perfect condition." I had him write and sign on the service receipt that he would warranty/replace that ABS wire fix for 5 yrs. Sux, cuz I really like that shop....just goes to show, you are better off doing your own work if you can, you will be more careful than they are.

  6. Here in Massholia, we seem to have an over-abundance of 3rd whirld dopes cruising around with mail-order licenses. My wife got backed into by an Indian lady who refused to give up her license details etc in fear of insurance claims etc. Anyway, being THE socialist craaphole of USA, we are a magnet for dypshyt drivers here. Dopes just keep voting for more dope-breeding welfare programs here, no mystery to it.

  7. A word of caution when trying to find the ABS test connector under your dash. Mine is a 2001 Forester, and the only open white connector is above the accel pedal. One by one I grounded each of the 8 holes, none of them produced any ABS light flashing when I turned the key to ON. 2 of the holes produced sparks, yikes. The ABS and CEL lights did go off, along with running lights and instrument panel lights. I found one toasted fuse, a 20 amp in the engine compartment box that the manual described as the Lighting fuse. That got my lights turned back on, but I am still twigging a bit about the CEL going off and not coming back on....it had been on due to my cat efficiency below threshold. Hmmmm. Anyway, the only open connector above the brake pedal was a small black one, and yes it had the 2 black wires nearby. I did not bother testing it since I had already produced sparks on the white one. Also, I removed the plastic kickplate near the driver's door since the Endwrench article mentioned the ABS test connector hides in there.....well, nope, it doesn't, that I could see. Anyway, I went ahead and replaced the front left ABS sensor since I was sure it needed doing. The ABS and CEL lights are off for now.
