1. had the same problems in my 84 gl. problems went away when warmed up.
 2. worn switch probably. there is a video on you tube on replacing switch. took me about an hour and i never did one before.
 3. boy. that's a real good one. i once replaced a bad line to the clutch reservoir on my 99 outback with a brake line from a mazda that cost me about 3 bucks from pick n pull. but i got that tip from a USMB member.
 4. im hoping on getting some help on determining the winner. if you like a specific tip or hack then quote it with a plus 1. read post 1 and 12 to give you an idea what we are looking for here. read next post. hit the like box. thats a better idea.
 5. a hack is a tip. perhaps an unusual one, a creative one, or a little known one that can help the subaru owner make a repair on the side of the road with very limited mechanical knowledge or tools to get back on the road. or maybe a tip to get better gas mileage or performance that practically no one else has ever thought of. it could be a tip on making a cross-country or road trip better, easier, or more fun. it could be a money saving tip. basically, what i was looking for was "ah-ha" tips that would surprise, educate, or maybe astound us subie owners in making owning the subaru easier, cheaper, or more fun. "How To Keep Your Subaru Alive" has been a godsend to this non mechanically inclined subie owner. i thought it would be nice to give away my extra copy to a lucky , smart, and inventive USMB member. it would be my way of giving back. USMB members have saved me THOUSANDS of dollars in repair bills by helping me with tips, advice , and confidence in tackling repairs. keep the hacks coming. they are all good. everyone will benefit.
 6. 18,000 miles commuting every year tends to add up, ha ha. also have 70k on my harley and about 15,000 miles on my bicycle. also drove my tractor trailer 2300 miles a week. about 100,000 miles a year . that's for accounting weeks off for vacations. and what did I do on Vacation? I drove somewhere , ha ha. i'm a movin fool.
 7. 84 gl 333,333.3 drove it around neighborhood to get to this and then parked. 97 legacy 270k and change. still going strong. 99 outback 293k and still going strong.
 8. im curious why this would make the motor bog down for a few seconds and then go or fine when motor is completely warmed up? the best way to describe problem is that the motor acts like my 84gl with carb acted before it it was warmed up and the choke was not open all the way. after my outback is completely warmed up it runs fine. only has happened the last 2 times . both mornings it was around 0-5 degrees out but i have had many days like this over the last 11 winters without this happening.. thanks for the replies.
 9. have had this 99 outback for 11 years and never had this problem before. when motor is cold the car hesitates when accelerating going down the road. seems to bog down a little and then goes. when warmed up it is fine. it acts exactly like a car that has a choke that is not fully opened. i have a feeling that this problem is going to get worse if i dont find the problem and fix. it does have a clean air filter and recent oil change. could it be a fuel filter? or the MAF? or something with the fuel injection?
 10. I would like to give back to the USMB community by giving away my extra copy of " How To Keep Your Subaru Alive " 1972-84 to the member that can come up with the best "hack" ( TIP ) on anything that pertains to your subaru. it could be a repair hack, an off roading hack, a travel hack., a money saving hack. anything that makes owning your subaru easier. i'm open to suggestions to this contest. you can enter as many times as you wish. the top hack can be determined by USMB members themselves by a general consensus . I think we should give this contest a month, till January 31st.. the first week of February I will mail off the copy to the winner. how does that sound?
 11. just trying to help. i'm going by 40 years experience with all kinds of cars and research i have done and what consumer reports says. do what you want.
 12. after i put the other switch in turned it on and ran it up to temp and the fan still would not come on to about 190-195. maybe i didnt give it enough chance but got nervous so i connected the ground wire again to have fan on all the time. did not overheat. stayed a little above normal point. heater worked great for a couple minutes and then went lukewarm. i ran it about 15 minutes like that. is it possible i have an airpocket in the system? i did let it cool off twice and only had a add a couple more ounces of coolant. i know how to bleed the air out in my legacy and outback but this is a 84gl with the 1.8. it doesnt have a bleed screw on the radiator.i did put the front end higher on jack stands a couple inches above the rear because a member suggested that.
 13. well did this and fan works with a ground wire. took out switch and cleaned outside connector and plug. the inside part was clean. then tried it and the fan would not come on. and it slowly overheated again. so i connected a ground wire to run fan all the time. ran it up to temp and an additional 20 minutes and it did NOT overheat! now will take switch off a parts car i have and try that. everything was fine regarding all hoses being hot, heater hoses too but heater still blowing cold air. would this be a bad temperature control on the dash? it's not loose and clicks thru all the ranges.
 14. try not to rush it. you'll make a mistake that you'll regret for years. i know , easier said than done. for reliability i would go toyota. a senior owned camry or corolla. almost any toyota is rated tops in reliability with Consumer Reports. seniors usually keep all maintenance records and baby their cars. i wont buy a car from a young person. when i was young i beat the crap out of my cars. you can find a real good deal if you have patience. put email alerts on craigslist for the type of car you are looking for and you can beat the rush. i found a real good used subaru back in 2005 that was 3000 less then market value. at first i was suspicious but when talking to the owner the reason he was having problems selling it was because it had a salvage title on it due to a minor rear end collision that was repaired properly. so i bought it and it is still my daily driver. driven it 180,000 plus miles and has 0ver 289,000 miles on the clock.
 15. before going in for good looks i would be thinking about getting the motor running right. maybe i would do an oil flush. definately a radiator / coolant flush. tune-up. clean out the EGR valve and check/ replace the pvc valve. not too hard. new air cleaner goes without saying. having been sitting for 8 years is a real concern for all the seals. probably dried out and cracked and you will be leaking oil like an old Harley. get a book called " How to keep Your Subaru Alive " from ebay or amazon for about 12 bucks. even i, an amateur can understand it to do a lot of minor repairs and tune ups.
 16. if it hasnt sold in a month at that price i would be wondering why. did anyone suggest taking it to a mechanic to check it out first? around here that costs about 80 bucks. that car goes for 2000-2500 easy. i usually dont look at 1000 dollar subies around here. usually they need tires which is about 500 or the tranny is acting up or it's overheating. well , maybe the seller does not know the worth but that is probably unlikely. if it really was any good it would have sold in a day or 2.
 17. not much. had done previous flush before i parked it. did not get hardly any crap that time either.
 18.
Sapper

your suggestion worked like a charm.

both radiator hoses got hot and both heater hoses got hot but heater still blowing cool air. would this suggest temp control on dash?

also radiator fan would not come on when temp very slowly inched up past normal. it worked fan 2 days ago. i checked wire plug to radiator. very frustrating.

had to shut it down when it started going towards the red mark and water started blowing out the hose attached near the radiator cap.

back to square one. if i can get fan to work i may be OK. it doesnt appear to be a head gasket problem. the thermostat appears to working fine.

edit. checked fuse. it is fine.

 19. that little bugger , t stat, is not all that easy putting back in. keeps moving so i cant get a good seal between housing and motor. did the ol pan of hot water test and it opened but not as much as the OEM stat i got. keeping fingers crossed. probably get to it tomorrow and test.
