Severe front end grinding
myfinalcoffinx replied to myfinalcoffinx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That makes sense, however, on the opposite side of the grinding, I am burning quite a bit of brake. They are about 7 months old, and about 20% remain. I washed my wheel two days ago, and it is already covered with brake dust. Is that the same issue you think? -
Severe front end grinding
myfinalcoffinx replied to myfinalcoffinx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'll be sure to try that tomorrow morning, but I have another question. On the other side, something is constantly squeaking when the wheels are spinning. When I stop the car, the lug nuts and wheel are VERY hot. I thougt bearings, but no play whatsoever. Any thoughts? I was thinking the castle nut was too tight as per what my dad said, but after reading that thread you sent I have changed my mind... any thoughts? -
Severe front end grinding
myfinalcoffinx replied to myfinalcoffinx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was thinking something similar, but at the same time I don't think it could be that because mine has developed from just a squeaky brake, to this rumbling of the front end when I stop. I'm gonna pull it apart on Saturday and see what I can find, but any pointers on what to look for would be appreciated. -
I'm clocking in at just over 270k

Severe front end grinding

I'm sorry, I meant front left side! -
Recntly my ea81 has developed an intense grinding noise coming from my front right side whenever I depress the brake pedal. I don't even know how to describe it other than it fills the entire car with grinding noise, and I can feel the scraping in my feet throught the floor. It doesn't do it all the time, only after I've been driving for a little bit, and it doesn't do it when I "slow down", it only does it when I am going slow and coming to a stop. I just redid my bearings on that side and I'm wondering if there was something I put together wrong. I get out and nothing is hot, and it doesn't smell like grinding brakes or anything, so I'm a bit confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i was told that there were two fuel filters on the ea81. i know where one of them is, but where is the other? which is "primary" and which is "secondary?" thanks, kevin

exhaust problems
myfinalcoffinx replied to myfinalcoffinx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All this said, I'm not quite sure I have my terminology right... I need to fix a leak coming from a lack of a gasket at the point where the exhaust y pipe bolts to the bottom of the engine. It says in my manual that it bolts directly to the flange. What do I need to ask for at the dealer? -
I'm having a bit of trouble with my exhaust. It's an EA81. The gasket where the pipe bolts to the flange leaks quite a bit on both sides. I am curious as to where to get 2 new gaskets, their approproiate sizes (distance between bolts, diameter of the hole etc. or a part number) and what kind of sealer to use. I tried autozone but they gave me two round gaskets that were definately the wrong ones.

I don't know about anybody else, but I've never heard of that, and never experienced it either, but I thought this was pretty funny. An anonymous fan writes... My parents own an '84 Subaru, and I've experienced the greatness of the "Hill-Holder" clutch technology. Assuming you haven't been enlightened, let me describe it's beauty... Imagine that you pull up to a stop light on an uphill grade. While stopped, you have your left foot on clutch and right foot on brake. Now, an amateur monster truck pulls up behind you. In a normal car, you then proceed to sweat buckets in anticipation of (a) stalling the motor and being squashed, or ( doing a foot dance while burning up your little clutch plate. But with the "Hill-Holder", as my experience has shown, it's like a magic foot sent from high above conveniently pushing the break pedal in your time of need. Imagine a third leg coming out between your regular legs. Wait, don't imagine that. Anyway, once you push all the way in on the clutch AND brake, you can take your foot off the brake and push the gas; it keeps the brake ON until you release the clutch. Amazing! See the "Hill Holder Clutch" defined here: http://www.cars101.com/subaru_terms.html I think, due to re-designs of the subaru AWD, they had to lose the "Hill Holder" option, but guess what... the "Hill Holder" is back (in Foresters?) for 2003 according to this: http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/new/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/23328.htm Hope that clears things up for you.

Does the intermittant wiper on an 1982 GL have a relay? And if so does anyone know where it is located/ how to get to it? I figure its somewhere in the dash...
-
Here's the story. I left my wipers half way up over night a couple years back, and for some reason, in the morning, they would no longer go above that point when they were on intermittant. They work just fine on low and high, but the int. goes half way up the windsheild and they cut stop. i have to turn it to low or high to allow it to complete the cycle, and then i have to stop the wipers when they get to the bottom. Additionally, they do not complete the cycles when i turn the knob to the off position. I've done everything I can think of; followed the electrical as far as I can, and checked the motor. Is there something that I could be missing? A relay somewhere or something? Any tips?

I just finished clearing up noise from the wheels of my ea81, and I am now on to the next task-- the heinous exhaust noise. I have already found the source of the issue, the stud that holds the pipe to the manifold has come out, and taken the threads with it. So the hole on my manifold is stripped out, and I don't know what to do about it. I've called around to see if anyone would tap it out for me, but nobody wants to do that with the aluminium- and I'm not even sure if thats what I want to do. What would you guys recommend? I was thinking a heely coil, but I don't know how well that would work on the exhaust. Any other ideas?

'82 gl bearings
myfinalcoffinx replied to myfinalcoffinx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
after reading several threads about this, i'm curious. Should I use the set of bearings off of a junkyard car, or would I be better off going to the store and getting new bearings and seals? What do I need to buy if I'm going to the store? Whats this about inner/outer and the seals? -
So I'm having trouble with my '82 gl wheel bearings. I've had it diagnosed in several shops, and they all tell me that I need to replace them. I have the replacement parts, but I'm a little bit concerned with the project that I'm getting myself into. Does anyone have any tips on how to go about doing this project? Anything that will make my life easier would be appreciated.
