  1. Groovy, this fellow is a 2003. Is there normally any designation between EJ25d and the other versions or do I really just need to know my stuff? Did the D even come on Outback models this late? I've come across a lot of documentation about this problem but 2003 seems to be a bit of a gap year in knowledge. Sorry for so many questions, but I'm really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of a soob!
  2. Thanks guys, this is terrific. I'm going to look at a car tomorrow and would like to check the engine. Is the model printed anywhere on the vehicle, or do I just need to know what to look for?
  3. Hey guys, I haven't been involved in USMB for years, ever since my old '82 GL was destroyed and sold for scrap, and I'm excited to be back! I've been without a car for a few years now and I'm ready to get back behind the wheel of a Subaru. I'm thinking about going for an early-mid 2000s Outback but have been told that there are some engines and models to avoid (headgaskets were a big one, or so I was told). I thought I'd harness the power of the masses to see what you guys think or if you could point me to some resources that outline common problems in the different model years and engines. Thanks! Kevin
  4. I'll keep my eyes out, and be sure to let you and the cops know if I see it. It's kind of academic at this point, but in what part of Seattle was it last seen?
  5. Indeed. I got a 60% tuition and scholarship and like 3 grand a year for housing and books. When it all boils down, it's about 50% of the total cost of school, but I have to keep my GPA above 3.5 (!) which is proving to be far more challenging than I had originally anticipated. I guess the advance multivariable calculus classes aren't really helping...
  6. Thats for sure! I see a ton of newer gen Subarus, but seldom do I see any older ones.
  7. Is there anyone on here that attends UW, or will be this fall? I'm thinking about possibly starting a Subaru Club at the University of Washington. There isn't one, and all I need is four people who are dedicated to the cause. Get back with me, and maybe we can meet up to discuss.
  8. I'm certain that it was a ea81 wagon. It was broken down, going up the hill into Des Moines, WA and I guess the person who owns it isn't on here, or hasn't seen this. I didn't get a chance to stop and examine it, so I couldn't tell exactly what year it was, but for sure between 81 and 84. Anyway, I thought it might be someone on here, but evidently, it's not. Just a good looking subie, that's all.
  9. Who's beautiful red EA-81 wagon was broken down today on the hill heading to Des Moines on the Kent-Des Moines road? That thing was gorgeous!
  10. I get that "what you lookin' at" look all the time. Especially when I'm in my other cars.
  11. I'm 5'11" as well, and I've never had a problem. In fact, my seat goes so far back that sometimes I can't reach the pedals at all. To be fair though, I do have shorter than average legs for someone my height and a long torso.
  12. pfew. Thanks for the help guys. I took it over to my friend's hydroulic lift. We lifted it up and looked under there, and the U-joint on the back had broken and was "bound up." 20 minutes and $20 later and we were all fixed up. Let's just hope I don't have to drive this POS for much longer.
  13. is it the bell for when your seatbelt isn't on and the car must tell you? I've never owned an ea82, but I think thats where the ea81's beeper is.
  14. Due to my Subie being out of comission (at least for now:brow: ) I've been driving my dad's crappy Ford Explorer. It's a gas hog and I just all around don't like it. Anyway, I turned a corner off of the freeway offramp this evening, and it made a thug and then it started shaking, and I mean violently. Any cv or tranny problem I've ever had on my Subie was dwarfed by this sucker. So now I'm out of a vehicle until I can figure out what is wrong with a) a domestic car (not such a big fan) a Ford (even less than GM) and c) a car that I've never looked under before in my life. I'm hoping its an axle problem in the rear, because I can take care of that. All else, I guess I'll have to take it to a mechanic, any recommendations in the Puget Sound area? I've been ripped off by a couple, so I have a bad taste in my mouth, but any thoughts?
  15. Now this is depressing. http://design2.maskin.ntnu.no/ansatte/aso/Aso-web/Workshopweb/Dissection%20lab/dissectionlab.htm What did they do to it at the end? Oh, they smashed the glass, destroyed the body panels and threw all of the parts inside of it and scrapped it. AHHHHHH.
  16. I've had three tickets, all of which have been erased completely by this attorney of mine. He's a real champ. The court date for the third one was on my 18th birthday, and was for (get this) doing 40 in a 35 on a mountain highway. I was like WTF? I was going up snowshoeing in the subie, and got pulled over in a "mass grave". This guy had like 10 cars pulled over, and was just flagging people down after his buddy zapped 'em with the radar gun. What really got me going was that the place I pulled into, was the parking lot for the trailhead:banghead: . ahhhh. Anyway, this guy has gotten me out of a lot of shizzy, and I trust him on this one!
  17. Yeah, I called my attorney this afternoon. He's going to sit down with me on Friday and we're going to go over the case. He said he'll do whatever is necessary to take care of this properly and in my best interest. I've already got a call into the insurance commissioner in WA, but I hadn't even thought of doing Texas, but you can count on me doing that before Friday. Anyway, enough was enough, and I'm taking the legal route. Thanks for your help and concern!
  18. No kidding! 10 AM, first of all, is really 9 AM here, second, its rediculious to request someone to respond to a letter that they didn't get until the 23, by the 24th at a time which it is likely that they are at work, school, performing their trade etc. The draft I got wasn't written in crayon, but I can imagine that the original was. This lady is an idiot and a crook. I'd really quite literally do business with the drug dealers and junkies across the street from my work than spend another dime with this company.
  19. This made me laugh. Thanks for that! I didn't realize how true it was until this incident.
  20. I can't believe these [insert profane word/words/phrase here]. I just got a letter in the mail saying that my only other option to battle their crappy settlement is to get two appraisers and an umpire and all that business, and if they don't hear back from me by tomorrow by 10 AM (San Antonio time, so 9 AM) they will consider the property damage portion of the claim settled. So I'm drafting a strongly worded letter that I will fax to them in the morning, and tell them what's what. I've been doing my research, and I know for a FACT that they are required to look at ads in the area, and take those into account before forcing me to pay for an appraiser according to WAC 284-30-330 section (8) as well as specifically outlined in WAC 284-30-3907 section (2, "c"). I've been doing my reasearch, and they aren't going to screw me. If anyone sees this next week/month/year whenever and needs some help solving their insurance debacle, please don't hesitate to let me know, and I'd be more than happy to assist you in defeating these scumbags again and again and again. Also, the WAC's (http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/ - specifically 284-30-3907 and 284-30-330) are proving to be super helpful. So for anyone in Washington, they are a great resource in learning what your rights as a claimant are.
  21. Of course I'm switching! It's not my policy that I'm dealing with, but it just so happens that it is the same company. They are using that to try to destroy me. They are saying that "if it's a collector's car, why didnt you have full coverage on it" which is bull, because if I was insured with another company, and was dealing with you in the same way, you would't know what I had in the way of insurance on it. These creeps are scum. They had 71 complaints against them last year, and aren't even that big of a company in Washington. They didn't register on the list of top collectors in WA but were right up there in complaints in the same state which tells me that they are just about the worst you can get. Small company, very few insured under them, yet they are competative for the number one spot in complaints filed to the insurance commissioner.
  22. Under 500 perhaps, but not in the condition that mine was in. The company just doesn't seem to understand that this car was in excellent shape, and they are comparing it to rusted out, ticking cv joints, noisy exhaust, sticky transmission heaps of junk. I'm not sure how I'm going to make them see that their "comperable cars" are garbage...
  23. No kidding! I would seriously be willing to do a ton of work on that, just so people who are in similar situations don't have to go through all of the garbage/BS advice out there, and aren't thrown on a wild goose chase for bills of sale and similar just so that they can dance for the insurance company. It drives me nuts, in much the same way gift cards/certificates do. As soon as another party has the money, or the item or whatever it is that you want, they place all of their restrictions on it. Like expriation dates on gift certificates, and the policy in most stores to "not give change." It's just funny that as soon as the power is in most people's hands, they abuse it.
  24. WTF? How about THIS. HAHA I'll be faxing this to the lady at the insurance company tomorrow, and reading it aloud over the phone to her as well. I AM allowed to use newspaper ads as well as other auto publications, so really, what they tell me is all LIES! Awesome. 13. They've declared my vehicle a total loss but won't pay me enough to replace it. Is that legal? The company owes you the actual cash value of a comparable vehicle in your local area. You can determine this amount by using dealer quotes and/or newspaper ads or other auto sales publications, as long as the vehicle being sold is comparable to yours in mileage, condition, options, etc. In addition they will pay you sales tax on the value of your vehicle, and pay the unused portion of your registration fees. You may have the option of keeping your car (called - retaining the salvage). If you do, the company will subtract the value of the salvage from the final settlement, as you are keeping the damaged car. (WAC 284-30-3901 through WAC 284-30-3916)
