  1. I use them all the time...but don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about this set. May have to wait till Monday. Hey a break in wrenching might be a good thing.
  2. Sorry, I don't. Actually not from here. Just moved here because its cheap. Lots of rusty s-10's out here, but will keep my eyes open.
  3. I have had a terrible time with poor parts quality lately. Wanted to use subaru intake gaskets on my car, but they are special order...take till monday. Bought felpro gaskets instead. Has anyone had any trouble with Felpro gaskets? Especially lately...I find that manufacturers sometimes change suppliers and sometimes the quality drops. Don't want to do all the work twice! Thanks.
  4. actually, the crankshaft is fine, I think...but pulley isnt spinning evenly, I think its worn out...but car is also not running right..maybe once I fix that problem the pulley will settle down and spin true. No noise in crankcase What is contact phone number for this Super Rupair in Boulder? Is it a junkyard?
  5. I think there is a chance I can save my legacy after all. Need to know if the crankshaft pulley part number for the newer 1998 Legacy 2.2 or 2.5 will fit my 1991 Legacy. since this part has rubber in it, would like something that is not 15 years old...if possible.
  6. I spoke with my mechanic about the subaru. he says that if the car runs unevenly...especially when warm, to check the intake gaskets for a leak. he says that the intake gaskets on the early 2.2L tended to crack and would cause a vacuum leak, causing one side of the engine to run lean. That is exactly what I think is happening. Looked at the intake gasket...leak is so bad I can see it! Happy day. Maybe it will live again!!
  7. Just looked at a 1995 Legacy...pulled the front differential dip stick out, wiped it on a paper towel, lots of black residue on shaft, and tip. Test drove it, noisy both sides going around turns...just like mine. Okay...maybe somehow dirt got in there...doubt it. Residue not silver, but black. any one else run across this before?
  8. Acutally, think I will skip the car. Appears to be burning oil, purrs/noise in reverse sometimes, and this weird thing that makes the tires sound really loud, plus the fact that the car was warmed up when I went to see it...and had previously run porrly when cold..plus 171K miles...too many risks. need a car that will last at least 2 years...not one. Just have a really bad feeling about this car...desperate, but not that desperate.
  9. What subaru's come with a 2.2L engine besides the Legacy? What is in the Forester? Actually, I need models and years for all 2.2L AWD subarus. Will buy anything I can find with a good engine and tranny and less than 170K. Tired of driving 3-6 hours round trip to look at 1 or 2 cars and coming up empty handed...just can't afford it, mentally, financially. What a mess. Why can't there be one good subaru in the iowa area with a good engine and tranny for under $5000???? Every one I drive needs a tranny, an engine, or sometimes both! Keep finding cars at 170-186K...on their last fuzzy legs. That just doesn't work. URGHHHHH
  10. Well, I'm thinking that if the heat from the combustion chamber is getting into the oil pan...that would show up on the dipstick I think. Kind of like an exhaust leak into the oil. I'm thinking it would be a pretty good sign of bad rings>??
  11. I have a theory that baked oil residue on a subaru 2.2L dipstick is a sign that the oil has not been changed regularly and may have oil burning problems. I don't know if this is an accurate guage or not. All subies i've seen that I know are well cared for do not have baked oil on dipstick. Any thoughts?
  12. I am trying to buy a car. The guy with the 1996 Legacy said that the car wouldn't start on Friday, so they jumped it...and it still ran funny. I came to drive it on Saturday, and found that the car had already been driven and the engine warmed up. In my experience, if a car takes a jump, then its good to go. I think maybe this car doesnt run right when cold? Also didn't get to hear the cold start.
  13. Bump. Need more opinions. Car was a fleet vehilce...according to owner. he has only had it 9 months...which also makes me nervous. There are no real oil leaks on the car at all, looks like it was well cared for. All axle boots good, etc. He says he just bought the car for the winter while his truck was being fixed. I want to believe him...but have a bad feeling about the whole thing. no obvious torque binding. Did not notice a tow hitch...but wasn't really looking for one.
  14. since I might buy a newer subaru, what are the gear ratios for a 1995 or 1996 or 1997 or 1998 Legacy, AWD, automatic? which ones are interchangable?
  15. I test drove a 96 Legacy yesterday evening. 171K. It seems to be about that milege that transmissions seem to tank, so very nervous. Sometimes I could feel the 2-3 upshift. I can't say it grabbed or even shifted hard, it was just more noticable that the 1-2 and 3-4. The tranny was power flushed at 155K. Tranny fluid still looks brand new. I have never lost a gear in a transmission before. I'm not sure what the beginning of the end feels like. Does a tranny start to slip before it grabs? Can a "noticeable shift" turn into a grab without slip? If there was a tranny shifting problem, wouldn't it show up in the fluid somehow? I have to let the guy know early Sunday morning or he will keep showing it to other buyers. Need help on this one ASAP!!!!
  16. I talked with my subaru parts department. They said they would be wiling to offer USMB members a 10% discount on parts. On many things their prices are better than the 1stsubaruparts web site. On some things, like timing belts, they are more expensive. Just depends what your looking for. My dealer does not have a web site, but you can email them at mjninc1@qwest.net or call at 1-800-332-0290. Ask for Bart or Doug and tell them you are a USMB member. (this means I get a discount too!!)
  17. 1st parts is best price for timing belt, seals. but if you want special stuff, like bolts, oil pump, what I call "hard parts", crankshaft pulley, tensioner, etc. I think my dealer is cheaper.
  18. I finally found an official answer regarding the 2.2L subaru engines. It is true that up till 1996 they were non-interferance. Starting in 1997, all subaru engines are interferance: both 2.2 and 2.5.
  19. Question, the head gaskets on the 2.5 engine...do they go out repeatedly or is it a once fixed, good for another 150K? Just wondering
  20. I've replaced a lot of engines on various cars...and priced junk yard engines on Subarus. I have found them to run about $350 to $700 for a used engine. That would definately be the best, easiest and safest choice. Once you open up and engine...so many things can go wrong on the rebuild...and it is rarely worth the time or cost. huge amount of time. Takes specialty tools...which I don't have and have to "rent". Just the cost of pistons, machine work, valves and gaskets...it will cost at least $350. I'd make sure the belt was on right, then run the compression test. Then junk yard time. I do not recommend a remanufactured engine, because of the same problems of doing it yourself...too many things that can go wrong if it wasn't rebuilt just right. And the nimrods who rebuild the remans don't care as much as you do, so less careful. Just my 2 cents. If you do a search on "non interface or interface" I had a discussion earlier on when the 2.2L switched to interface. The rummor is in 1997. Maybe the 1990-1996 are non interface. I think that is the cut off.
  21. Car was sitting on grass probably. Decided to pass on this one.
  22. I did a compression test on a 97 Legacy and the compression was too high. 2.2L engine. 210, 195,195 and 185. Thought I noticed a puff of something out of the air intake tube to the IAC when I did the test... tube was disconnected accidently. Car ran fine. What do you think?
  23. Take a listen to the oil filler tube for air escaping past rings. If coolant bubbles, Could be a head gasket blown on the outside edge...but more often the head gasket blows between cylinders.
