Featured Replies

Okay...cig lighter doen't work, checked fuse and it's ok. also, the battery and the brake icons are lighting up for a few moments, every 5 minutes or so while I'm driving. Any ideas?

Thanks!!

AJ

Welcome to the forum.

Are you saying that the cigarette lighter not working and battery/brake warning lights coming on happen simultaneously?

Aside from the lighter issue, those two warning lights appearing together typically happens when the alternator is failing.

same thought........think your alternator is failing. Go to an auto parts store, ask them to check out your charging system, both battery and alternator. No cost for this at an auto parts store.

oof...

you guys are awesome, by the way.

Is this something you would 'pay the man' to do, or is it simple enough for a novice?

Do it yourself... its as easy as easy gets.

+1. It's a great bonding experience with your Subie . . . and when you're successful it's a real feeling of accomplishment!

My $.02 (whether you want it or not): Don't buy an alternator from a chain parts store. Find a good auto-electric shop--there's usually one that's well respected in an area, ask some local mechanics who they use.

Or if you really want to live on the edge (and save money) go to a Pull-and-Pay or auto salvage yard and get a used one. Really! Just be sure it comes from a compatible car--and a reputable yard will stand behind its part if you should have to return it.

Might want to get a Haynes manual, it's fairly helpful with pics and step-by-step instructions. And of course search here on USMB and ask questions.

Good luck.
