Swinging Steering

Featured Replies

Ok, so here's a interesting question. On my little red wagon (ea82 GL), I've noticed a bit of a "swing" when i steer to the right.. Mostly on the highway. Its kinda weird to describe, when the road bends right, i steer right, and the rear of the car kind've swings with it instead of just going with it. It doesnt do it when i steer left. Any ideas? I did replace the Right (passenger) tie-rod. would it be related? i tried my best to align it.

maybe worn out rear struts.

I agree with bheinen, I had a non-soob that seemed to have a hammock for a rear suspension... found one shock was doing all the work for both, made it 'teeter' it's butt in the corners - very weird to describe

check your right rear strut, you may be pivoting off the left side because the right isn't doing its job

if you are also experiencing a delay in steering, or a lag, then your rack bushings might be shot. they are easy to replace. not at all out of the ordinary for a a vehicle your age. plus on subarus oil leaks tend to end up down on those components, causing the rubber to saturate and deteriorate.

not really a delay in the steering. (although i did notice a slight pull. might need to tweak the alignment a bit) steers just fine.

I just checked the struts. (not really sure how to check just one). I rocked the car side-side. and it righted the rocking fairly quickly.

edit: while i was doing that i didn't notice any clicking.

take the right rear 'strut' off, it's pretty easy to do - just jack it up and pull the tire out of your way, two strut bolts up top, one on the bottom

although it may look fine, I bet if you push down on it when you have it out; it has little resistance to being compressed or extending, it doesn't take a ton of force, but if it moves fairly easily then its toast

it could be bent, dented or punctured, have blown seals etc - at any rate it won't take but a few minutes to check this out and rule it out or in

of course, if the bottom half falls on the ground while the top is still attached, thats a good clue too  *

hmm, i will have to try that. hopefully soon. Living with the In-laws, and in a HOA area... makes it interesting to get the car worked on. I actually got citation for changing my brakes out on the curb. Pricks.

I will try that. thanks!
