Sometimes when i make a left turn....

Featured Replies

So, sometimes when i make a left turn at a slower speed but not super slow, i get a 'hum' like a vibration hum. any ideas what that might be? axle related? something else?

Push front a rearward on the wheel and see if you have any play. The wheel bearings on these vehicles are not Roller bearings so I dout what you are hearing is a bearing. You will most likely not hear a worn wheel bearing on these cars.

Do you have any play in the axle shaft? Could be a worn DOJ, do you feel anything or just hear it?

+1 - probable wheel bearing. Eventually it will start howling at freeway speeds. Turn the radio up louder.

GD, from what I know and what Miles has said numeras times is that you won't hear a bearing on the older soobs. A Roller bearing (like a '99 Blazer) you would hear.

i'll check the wheel out as far as movement goes. are wheel bearings easy to change out on these things?

call me dumb, but what is a DOJ?

need to find an abreviation glossary! haha.

Front Wheel bearings arn't bad, I think theres a write up on here somewhere on the USMR.

DOJ - Dubble Offset Joint. The inner cut on the axle (Closest to the tranny)

Oh you'll hear em alright. Either they squeek, howl, or they are crunchy like gravel. I had a front bearing on my Brat that was so loud even the radio wouldn't drown it out.

Think about it - there are degree's of "badness" when it comes to bearings - you might not hear a slightly worn bearing but you will definitely hear one that has 1/8" of slop in it and if one bearing fails that typically leads to it's sibliing failing in short order causing a real nasty racket.

Checking them won't always yeild much - remember to take the e-brake off as that locks the wheel to the knuckle. You probably won't be able to feel it at all but it doesn't mean it isn't bad.

had a bad wheel bearing on our 00 outback, if it would sound like that.. that thing was loud as hell but that was usually when driving straight and most speeds.

as far as if i hear/feel anything, its just randomly making a left turn, hear a low-midrange hum, and feel a slight vibration.

never a good thing when a ball falls out......

No not really, Ball pops out, gets jammed up in the race, bends/cracks race, race gets jammed, wheel locks up or puts a major drag on it. Seen that twice so far!

Other possible problem might be the steel belt seperating but more then likelly a wheel bearing. I know this because mine humms along nicely.

wouldnt the wheel bearing make noise all the time though?

If that were to happen (and I'm pretty sure it would take an IED to do it), you would likely end up in the ditch upside down if you didn't just wake up in front of the pearly gates.

I've seen then with massive amounts of play - never had one actually come apart. If that happened I'm pretty sure everything from the side of the transmission to the lug-nuts would be a total loss. But I'm pretty certain it would lockup before that happened.

No - when you turn you are side-loading the bearings and besides increasing the load on them you are causing the balls to run out of their normal track. Also 6000 series ball bearings aren't designed for side-loads so that's really their most common failure mode on an EA series Subaru.

GD

...or they are crunchy like gravel.

That's exactly how I would describe my rear bearing sounding like... not pleasant!
