November 28, 200916 yr I know this comes up a lot.. this inst a question though I just wanted to share. So I was tearing apart my dash to find the some gremlins. When i started pulling apart the spedo cluster, i noticed.. I had some indication lights missing. Now I know there are some that are just spacers, but my Check engine light had no bulb. Stealing the one from the "charge" indication, i plugged it back in. and Wow, (not so surprised though) it was on. drove it for a bit, still on. So I called the guy who i bought it from and asked him if he noticed it not being on. He said "I didn't want that to effect the sale of the car". Wow, I would've bought the car anyway regardless of the light being on. (I bought it for 280 bucks) But I just found it funny what people will go through just to sell the car. -Justin Edited November 28, 200916 yr by crazyman03
November 28, 200916 yr When you buy a car - ALWAYS check for the CEL durring the lamp check (ignition on). GD
November 28, 200916 yr What does the CEL light look like, becaust i dont think mine shows on when startup.
November 28, 200916 yr Author ya know, when i was doing the walk-around I wanted to be sure that i checked that.. obviously i didn't, and it didn't catch my eye since it wasn't on. oh and Abides here's some snaps of the indication:
December 1, 200916 yr Ok i just checked, i dont get the check engine upon startup but everywhere else. What do i do to get to this thing and change the bulb.
December 2, 200916 yr Author there are 2 screws on the inside top of the cluster, and i think 2 others just under the bevel under the lights. and use a flat-head to remove. If i remember correctly though.. I am laying down on the couch at the moment.. 'roo is out in the cold.. :-P Its pretty strait-forward on how to dismantle it just by looking at it.. no hidden screws. -Justin
December 10, 200916 yr Author shoot, i dont remember. you could pull one of the others and go to the auto store. I was missing the entire light mount. so i needed to pull one from another spot. -Justin
December 10, 200916 yr Oh, and just in case, only the EFI cars have this light wired up:-p Carbed cars here have it too, my 86 carbed ea82 had one, and yes, it was on all the time
December 10, 200916 yr Really? Not one of those special Californian things was it? Nope, federal emissions.
December 10, 200916 yr Author i was kinda lucky the bulb was out. the 'roo wouldn't have passed emissions if it was on. and too.. i guess the emissions guy didnt look for it either -Justin
December 11, 200916 yr I was told that my 1980 brat didnt even have a ce light , or a place for one even. is this right?
December 11, 200916 yr I think the earliest EFI engine in a Subie was 1981, and I'll bet even the US emissions laws weren't that tough back then, so most likely you won't have a space for a CE light. I've never seen a factory MY/Brat/Brumby EFI car (Aus never got the EA81T), first we saw of EFI was a handful of 85 RX turbos imported for rallying. Edited December 11, 200916 yr by wagonist
