brat engine swap help

Featured Replies

i'm getting a brat and plan to build it into a rally ready daily driver and want to know what my engine options are.

Plenty of options.

  1. Built EA81
  2. EA82
  3. EA82T
  4. EJ18
  5. EJ20T
  6. EJ22
  7. EJ22T
  8. EJ25
  9. ER27
  10. EG30
  11. EG33

Now the real question... how much work do you want to do? Can you cut, weld & fabricate? How is your engine wiring experience?

you can throw on any ea82 long block, go with one from spfi, and gain a point compression, your existing carb manifold will fit and the bellhousing will fit.

the only trick is to remove the disty when you drop in the engine, then install the disty

i'm a mechanic for the military and i used to work as a welder/fabricator building plow trucks for state and towns. i really want an engine with aftermarket support and thats not going to brake the bank to get a donor car.

EJ22 is your answer then. You can find a sub-forum dedicated to the swap.

Welcome to the club,

EJ22 is good, but EJ18 is more available, more reliable, and cheaper. Not much difference in HP. Which Brat are you upgrading? Gen1 or Gen2?

ej18

* Horsepower: 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp) @ 6000 rpm

* Torque: 149.1 N·m (110 lb·ft) @ 3200 rpm

ej22

* Horsepower: 135 PS (99 kW; 133 bhp) @ 5800 rpm

* Torque: 186.3 N·m (137 lb·ft) @ 4800 rpm

EJ22's run for 250+kmi

I wouldn't say the EJ18 is any more reliable than the EJ22. Both are excelent engines and the differences (valve train, and size) really aren't big enough to point out a reliability problem with either one.

Also, the EJ22 is more availible as it was the only engine offered in Legacy's from '90 to '94 and the EJ18 didn't come onto the scene till the '93 Impreza was introduced.

Both are good for 300k+ easily.
