trans for Legacy turbo engine?

Featured Replies

I need a auto trans for my 94 legacy turbo wagon, will a non-turbo trans bolt up to it? Are the houseings different or just the internals?

Frank

First off, are we talking about the auto or the fairly rare 5spd?

Next, as far as the manual goes no. The turbo 5spd used a different drive ratio than the non-turbo.

So.... if I keep my original diff would the grear ratio match the rear or do I have to do anything else??

here's the final drive ratios of other subaru models...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legacy Turbo Models:

Automatic transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 4.11

Manual transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 3.90

Impreza 2.2l L models:

Automatic transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 4.11

Manual transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 3.90

Impreza 2.5RS models:

Automatic transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 4.44

Manual transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 4.11

WRX 2.0l models:

Automatic transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 4.11

Manual transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 3.90

Impreza WRX STi models:

Manual transmission gear ratios:

final drive ratio - 3.90

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The transmissions from the above cars will work on your car, however; if you decide to go to a tranny with a different final drive ratio than your original one you WILL have to either get a matching rear diff or swap in your front diff into the other tranny. Best bet is to change your rear diff as well... The legacy turbo tranny is one of the strongest ones out there so be weary of the strength of non-turbo tranny models. Also take into account that if you go to a shorter final drive ratio tranny you're rpm's will be higher when cruising on the highway, you may not want that (fuel mileage, noise, etc...)

hope this helps

WOW, you guys are great.

Let me see if I can get these smile icons to work::D :D :D :D :D

Nuwan, where did you get your info from? I thought the turbo legacy 5spd had a 4.11 in it.

Keith

The following is the correct info on the t legacy and first gen legacies.

1991-1994 turbo legacy is 3.9 AT & MT

1990-1991 legacies n/a

MT & AT 4.111

1992-1994 legacies n/a

MT 4.111

AT 3.900

can't remember where i got the info from, i just collect tidbits over the years and whatever else is from the old noggin:D

i stand corrected on the legacy tranny ratios... thanks Josh:D

Now if you want real beef... Then I got a Legacy B4 twin turbo A/T Its a 4.44

how hard is it to find a Legacy Turbo 5spd tranny? Are they expensive?

Mark,

I had a 5 speed turbo trans (from a 93).... Junked it. :D

As for the question about the dude's car...turbo wagons are all automatic in that vintage. the only turbo legacy with a 5 speed is a sedan.

I have three different salvage yards looking for me but the information they have says that only 92-94 will fit my 94 wagon.

I have located an auto trans from a 1991 turbo Legacy on my own, is it the same as my 1994? Why do the salvage yards think they are different?

I don't think they are.... I would be almost willing to bet the bank on the transmissions being the same 90-94 turbo wise.

I would take a crap shoot at it....If you can't find one used I can hook you up with a guy that gets Jap import ones and you can have him install it. He is local to me (Lancaster County PA). Let me know if Ican help.
