clutch replacement

Featured Replies

I lent my car to a friend. He burnt the clutch out. gone. no more adjustment. The pressure plate and bearing and such are all newish. 15,000 miles. i could just replace the friction disc don't you think? its only $80 more the whole kit. do you think its worth it?

You could do just the disc but the main problem is likely the flywheel and pressure plate are glazed. The flywheel you'll want to have milled. The pressure plate I don't know if they can machine. You can try cleaning it up, but the heat from sipping has probably weakened it. The TOB might be cooked too.

I'd do the whole thing.

That really sucks to hear. Might want to invest in an automatic car for lending out to friends.

you should be able to replace the disc by itself if you know the PP is not failed. you can scuff down the surfaces with 80 to 100 grit sandpaper.

BEWARE as i have seen a new clutch disc fail from a bad pressure plate. the clutch was already bad when re replaced the disc, it lasted a day, the culprit was the pressure late from the first time it failed.

you would have to take it all apart and inspect everything to decide what you are going to do

You tell the guy he smoked the clutch in your car and he should come over and help you replace it?

I've reused pressure plates. But you can't machine them - throws the clamping force dimentions out. Machine the flywheel, reuse the PP and replace eveything else. You don't want used bearings in there.

idk if this helps but i replaced a clutch in my buddies legacy with a 2.2 swap after his girlie toasted the clutch. i replaced everything but the flywheel it looked good so i just cleaned the surface with some emery cloth and its been running perfectly fine since

You tell the guy he smoked the clutch in your car and he should come over and help you replace it?

If he doesn't bring his checkbook, offering to help pay for this, he isn't really a friend.

Its easier to say: "Sorry dude, I don't like lending my car out" than it is to replace a clutch. I'm not fussing at you man, just trying to help save you some trouble at a later date.
