Trouble removing cam pulley

Featured Replies

I am in the process of removing the heads on this 200 Impreza 2.2

Tried to remove the bold holding the passenger side cam pulley, and could not get it to budge. Using a 2 foot extension, I wound up breaking the strap wrench.

Is there some trick to getting these off?

This one is the solid cast pulley.

The timing bet is off and there is not enough room for my impact wrench

Take the old timing belt and wrap it around the cam and crank gears and clamp in it the middle with a vise grips or c-clamp. Basically a figure 8 with the belt.

could you wait until the head is off, then use your impact wrench?

I just did an 01 2.5 that way.

What did you use to hold the pulley while the impact wrench is running?

I feel your pain, I am in the process of rebuilding a 2.0 and got to this point, broke a strap wrench, and I feel like my breaker bar is just warping the bolt. I am letting it sit for awhile till I get air tools this weekend. Depending on how much room you have, if you took off the valve covers the camshaft might have a spot you can put a wrench to hold it stable while trying to break it free.

you can kind of see the spot at the front of the camshafts where the wrench would go. I know my engine has one. But having the engine still in the car might make the whole wrench on camshaft a lil difficult. Make sure to post what works for you.

gwilson87, can you post a picture of the front of the pulleys where the bolt is? thanks

sorry to hijack the thread...

is this what you wanted to see? CIMG7281.JPG

I can get better shots as well, nothing better to do tonight....

I'm still trying to picture how using a timing belt on the cam.. I just can't figure out how that works..

I think Im going to buy a chain wrench.

On a 2000 Impreza 2.2 you don't need to remove the cam gears to pull the heads off.
