96 impreza wont start

Featured Replies

My Impreza wont start.

Quick story behind this car. I bought the car from a third party and the crankshaft pulley wheel needed to be replaced. I was driving it home and the wheel came off. The crank key was gone. I got a new key and put the pulley belt and timing belt back on. But now the car wont start. it just keeps cranking.

The battery is fully charged, and there is over half a tank of fuel in it.

I replaced the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft posi sensor is still good. All 4 cylinders are getting a spark. the spark wires are good. the ignition coil is good and the plugs themselves are good. I'm heading outside now to check the fuel injectors to see if fuel is getting to them.

Other than that, I am at a loss and I dont have money for a shop, so that's not a solution.

Hi

What other info did the previous owner give you? Why hadn't the car been fixed

Before the sale? Also did you change the crankshaft key yourself?

What happened when the key came off during driving? Was it a quick sudden stop?

Any sounds in the engine while the car was coming to a stop?

Lastly is the car standard? Turbo? Any mods?

previous owner only gave me the info about a knocking coming form the engine which we found out was a wobbly crankshaft pulley wheel knocking against the motor.

This is a 2.2 non turbo impreza with no mods. They didn't want to fix it because his dad just bought him a new car. They have lots of money >.<

Yes, changed the key myself. Pulled one from a Legacy motor in a nearby junkyard and installed it. It threaded itself in quite nicely.

When the key came off, it wasnt a sudden death. There was a sudden loss in power though. The car was just crawling and then it died.

are you familiar with the correct timing marks on these engines? check the links in below to see if you got it right.

was the key way boogered? how did you hold the the crank when tightening the pulley bolt? what did you torque it to?

in a nut shell, have you ever done a 2.2L belt before?

yeah.. i think you need to take this to a repair shop or have a pro-mechanic inspect it.

unfortunately, no, i have never done a 2.2 belt before. And my friend was actually the one who installed the key for me. He put the key in the wheel and then just hand tightened it and then gave a couple cranks with a socket until it was quite snug. I am quite unfamiliar with the correct timing for this motor.

I dont see a link :( and i can't find correct timing marks online for this.

I just wanna learn what to do and how to do it so I can get this back up and running rather than getting rid of this car.

Wow that color hurts.

The main pulley needs to be torqued properly. you may have lucked out once, but you wont a second time.

I also think that you have the timing messed up, everyone does it including the pros.

Wow that color hurts.[...]

I just pasted those links, and for some reason they came out that color.

Anyway, you're right, so I edited my post to fix it.
