Bought a 1999 Forester, MMO for oil?

Featured Replies

I have an 87GL and use 10w-40 with MMO in it as far as oil goes. The 1999 2.5L NA forester has 87,000 can I use the same oil and MMO in it?

Marvel Mystery Oil, is 10W-40 good for a forester in hot weather?

Okay, so MMO is Marvel Mystery Oil. Yea, I am aware of it. That product has been around for a long time. I have never heard anything negative about it, so if you have been happy with it, then I don't see any problem adding it to the Forester.

At the risk of starting the age old "engine oil debate", why do you feel the need to add anything to the oil?

. . . why do you feel the need to add anything to the oil?

Amen! MMO is, I'm sure, a fine old product and is useful in certain situations. But it should be used as needed and not constantly in a lubrication system.

the 2.5 has solid lifters with shims for lash adjustment, unlike the ea82 with hydrailic lash adjusters. the idea of Marvel's Mystery Oil is to cure the 'tick of death' associated with cam tower o-rings or dirty HLA's in ea82's.

If you have lifter noise in the 2.5, shims will be in order next time the heads are serviced.

You could run the MMO through to keep deposits and sjudge from forming. Ideally, apply the mmo just before oil changes.

The 1999 Forester has the Phase II 2.5L engine, which has hydrolic lifters.

Ironically, the 2.5L is back to solid lifters on my 2006 Forester. One step forward, two steps back.

No noise from the 2.5 just like how MMO has worked in my EA82. 10W-40 is ok though right I mean no harm done?
