May 17, 201015 yr Is there any special trick to changing the starter motor in a 1996 Legacy 2.5 GT? Every couple of weeks I turn the key and get nothing. After I wait a couple of seconds and try again, it starts right up. Never ever had an issue with it until this happened about two months back. Thanks for any advice!
May 17, 201015 yr Nothing special involved. Just be sure to disconnect the positive battery cable at the battery before anything else.
May 17, 201015 yr +1 to easy. one bolt for electrical connection. another wire disconnects with plastic clip. remove two bolts holding the starter in place. air intake is the only thing that might help to remove.
May 17, 201015 yr The two bolts that hold the starter on are 14mm on top, and a 17mm nut on bottom. +1 disconnect the battery, grounding out the starter on the frame/engine will ruin your day, and your shorts, DAMHIK
May 18, 201015 yr Author Thank you all kindly for the advice. I was worried it was something a little more involved. You get spoiled working on a 1981 Subaru, ya know??
May 18, 201015 yr Check and clean all you're battery and ground connections. Then put new $10 copper contacts in the solenoid of the starter. (or clean and bend the old ones) Don't replace the whole starter......they never need it. It is always contacts in the solenoid coupled with resistance in the circuit.
May 18, 201015 yr Author Just to verify, either way the starter should come out in order to clean the contacts, correct? Thanks.
