Short sreech at AC start up

Featured Replies

Hi folks! On my 95 Impreza, 2.2L, the ac starts with a loud screech.... seems to work okay after that.... still cools the air and the front of the compressor clearly turns. The screech is loud enough for my daughter to hear over her music.... which means it is so loud that most of you have probably heard it now and again!

So.... compressor or compressor clutch? And is there a difference in terms of repair. Do I need a compressor regardless?

Thanks!

Mike

there is a recent thread on this with good debate on both sides.

search compressor + clutch + used and read more recent ones.

Are you sure the belt is tight enough? May also consider adding oil to the A/C system.

probably due for a new belt. Its probably glazed from age and use.

Belt is like 7 bucks. cheap fix.

this was my first thought as well - also the cheapest & easiest to try first. :) make sure the new belt is properly tensioned after install & it should be good to go. (may need to re-tension after some usage as they will stretch just a little)

Be sure and check that belt AND the tensioner soon. The tensioner on mine broke, and threw the belt into the timing belt through the cover. Kicked the timing belt off while driving- ugh!
