I have an 01 forester and OBW in the shop. Both 2.5 sohc engines. The dealer called for different timing belts. I checked same teeth, size, pitch etc. It this like the CA spec belts that are heavier duty? Any ideas? I can post the part numbers tomorrow if it will help answer the question.

..subaru has 2 different belts for the sohc engine..differences in pitch not really discernible with the eye..the vin number will tell what belts will be needed

There are 2 different belts :

13020AA21C_OB/LEGACY

13020AA231_FORESTER

All SOHC 2.5 longblocks are the same.

-CA market and 5 speeds have different cam and crankgears

-Different stuff/lay out on the manifolds but engines are the same.

Check autozones website they list the teeth count, pitch, width, weight

the FORESTER belt and the OB are the same in all regards except the weight.

I conjecture that that the FORESTER belt is just a better belt/ longer lasting.

For the pitch to be different the cams,crank gear and toothed idler pulley would have to be different...they are all the same parts.

...although I can not speak from having direct experience, ..the info provided above and from autozone would appear "not" to be correct..for example..when looking at the web site "subaru parts for you" ..comparing the "01 Forester and OB..different part numbers are not just for the timing belt but also for the pulleys and sprockets (for ex. Cam R side sprockett for the forester is #13017AA042.. and for the OB #13017AA05D)..this topic has been brought up before...interesting read @ http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=93767

This different part numbers for the same part happens all the time.

A lot of times it a way for the dealers/parts people to make $.

In this case i think that the dealer has a heavier duty / longer lasting belt that they want buyers to buy.

Its the same with the 2.2 engine there are two belts/part numbers that fit it: one is a better belt.

I can tell you from personal experience that the timing belt for a 99 Forester 2.5 SOHC is DIFFERENT than the timing belt for a 2001 and 2002 Legacy 2.5 DOHC. IIR the Legacy ones were longer. Might have caused myself problems but when I really, really couldn't get the 99 belt on to the 2001 I finally called the auto parts. When the 2001 engine proved no good I got a 2000 2.5 SOHC abd the same belt worked on it.

 

Perhaps it was a fluke. But it definately happened to me.

They are the same belt, one is heavier duty. I was rebuilding two engines at the same time: one OB and one forester. So I was able to install them then rotate the engine 1,2,3,4 revolutions. The belts were in identical places every time. The difference in the part number for the cam is that they put a plastic cam on the right side of the engine on foresters. Both cars are running beautifully, no more leaky HGs.

ive never seen a 2001 or a 2002 legacy DOHC engine. i dont think they exist. DOHC stopped in 1999 and started back with the turbo legacy in 2005
