EA81 ignition switch - part superceeded?

Featured Replies

Ok - so I've got a Subaru ignition switch for my '83 Hatch. It is part number 783131010.

It's got male spade terminals on it (no wires like the stock one) and my assumption is that they intended for the installer to cut the wireing harness away from the old switch, crimp on some female spade's, and slip the wires over the new switch terminals.

Unfortunately the new switch doesn't fit inside the column covers as the spade terminals make it thicker than the cover will allow :banghead:

Did they superceed the lower column cover as well to make it fit with the new switch style? I'm doubting that it would be cool for the dealer to cut out a section of the columnn cover and leave the wires exposed

Here's the new style:

So what gives?

GD I had the same problem on my brat when I ordered the switch I got the same one to I ended up going to the junkyard (Which my cousin owns ) and pulling switches out of every early Japanese import I could find and I ended up finding out that nissan 79-86 pickups share the same switch as ea81 soobs and you can still buy that switch new the only difference is the switches have one bolt ear but go in and work fine other nissan's or datsun's may use the same switch too aka 510s and Zcars

The switch in the picture if for a non-tilt column. Sounds like you need one for a tilt column.

In case anyone goes searching for the info and finds this thread - the correct tilt column ignition switch part number is 783131020. Got mine today so they are still availible through Subaru. www.1stsubaruparts.com lists them for about $29. I paid a little more but got it next day and no shipping.

Count me in also as one who got the wrong one. Much as I tried I couldn't make it work. I fogot were I found the correct one but replaced it early this year. The orginal one had started shorting out in the contacts.
