how do I test the AC clutch

Featured Replies

My AC went out but was working the day before. I have had trouble with my AC on earlier legacys. With a mutlimeter can I test the see if the AC clutch is out?

The clutch doesnt go bad that often. First step in ANY ac diagnoses is to get a gauge set on the AC system, if the pressure is too low or too high the compressor will not come on.You most likely have a leak. Pressure slowly went down till the pressure dropped too much si the compressor wont come on, or....

stuff breaks.

Gauges are best, but if you don't have them and want to do a quick check of the clutch, disconnect the pressure switch connector and jump the pins in the plug.

You can do the same thing at the AC relays.

Don't let it operate this way for more than a few seconds.

You'll still need gauges to go further, but at least you know where the problem is.

My guess too.......low refrigerant level. You prolly need a recharge, and find source of leak. I bet your A/C has not been putting out really cold air for the past week or so?

I have an OBW 98 with 224K. The AC had cold air but about the same it has had all along. I loved the cold AC the 90-94 legacy had.

I will be checking with gauges later this week but my dealership friend didn't know how the isolate the clutch. Thanks guys.
