EA81 stereo upgrade/build.

Featured Replies

The rears are 4", but the opening is a little bigger. 5.25's would probably fit with minimal effort.

the brackets in the rear doors need to be notched to clear 5.25s, but yes they do fit!

It's been running since I posted this. No sub or anything yet. Massive improvement over stock though. I think I shouldn't have gone with such cheap front speakers - should have spent another $30 and got something louder.

Easy fix but could ruin your budget a bit if you count the ones that arent loud enough also.. watch for the sensitivity I would say anything over 92 db should be plenty unless I simply do not understand how noisy your hatch really is.

Thanks for the reccomendation on db - I will likely change them. The other's will make good replacements in another EA81. I'll shelve them for the next hatch with completely blown speakers. My hatch has all the carpeting, insulation, rear seats, and inner paneling removed and will have an EJ in the future with a "free flowing" exhaust. It's not terrible but it's not quiet either.

Yes, this ^^^^^.

And I still have all the sound deadening (such that it is) in place.

It is a shame all of the pictures for this thread are gone.

I have 5.25" speakers to mount in the factory rear location of the hatch.  Can this be done without butchering the factory panels?

I assume it can be done, but any guidance is appreciated here.

Thanks,

The Thread Necromancer.

It can be done.

You'll have to cut the metal underneath to accommodate the bigger speaker, and realign some of the holes, but the plastic will fit over the top without modification.

It's been a while since I did mine, but it wasn't difficult.
