xt6 trans or stay with d\r??

Featured Replies

doing an ej swap again and ive got a xt6 trans.just not sure how much work to make diff lock work and if its worth it? it will be going into 85 gl, so any input would be appreciated thanks guys

I have a "Frankentrans" in my 83 wagon and the diff lock is easy to hook up. The FT 4WD is well worth the effort, go for it! Mine is an RX box with 3.9 XT6 ring and pinion so it has HI/LO as well.

the XT6 transmission is awesome.

diff lock is super easy to rig up. install a simple solenoid. if you're swapping a trans then getting the diff lock to work will be the easy part, very simple set up.

if you want it to be ghetto, you can set it up to switch by hand - but all it needs is vacuum to actuate, that's it. you can feed it vacuum by hand or use a solenoid. take a vacuum hose - put it on the diaphragm to "lock it", then remove the vacuum hose to "unlock it". or spend the extra couple mintues installing to let a solenoid and button do it for you.

nice, i was thinking it would be easy but wasn't sure. i grabbed all the air pump and silenoids and switches and lines. thanks i might ask more when i go to install thanks a bunch.im thinking of a 99 2.2 mated to this trans or a 93 2.2 not sure. that extra 12 hp might be nice vs the non interference

actually, you do need to move the vacuum to the other side of the diaphragm to unlock it. but yea....

I would use the XT6 trans. probably the best option of any EA series setup. the center diff is the weak link. but it's better than part-time 4WD for the street. and the gearing is perfect for a 2.2 (unlike a FT4WD for an EA82t  )

its locking up both front and rear diff's, makes for excellent wheeling if thats what your after  not a very technical answer but its all ive got

The diff lock locks the center diff, same as putting a d/r trans into 4wd. When unlocked, it's providing power to whichever end has the least traction like a regular differential.

so what is it that the diff lock is locking, both front axles or engaging rear?
it's locking the center differential inside the transmission.

it's not "engaging the rear" in the 4WD sense like a truck or other subaru with PT4WD - it's FT4WD meaning full time 4 wheel drive.

its locking up both front and rear diff's
the center diff lock doesn't do anything to the front and rear diffs.
